Re: Audi says its sensational R8 will win..

I am not talking about the 07 or 08 future V8 M3, I am talking about the V6 coupe they just released in 06. Can you beleive that it gets the gas guzzler tax and only has 330hp?

That's awful! I guess small displacement doesn't necessarily make for an economical engine.

It's not the engine's fault - it's because the damn thing is so heavy. M3 used to be a sports car - now it's bigger than the first 7-Series...

It's not that heavy 3230lbs. By today's car standards that is fairly light. It's actually lighter than the old M3 coupe. According to the website it gets 16/24 mpg. I don't understand how a 3.0L V6 gets such poor mileage.

There is no way that an M3 weighs that little in US street trim with fluids - that's less than most 997's...

    jersey95,

Please provide a link to the website that states the 2006 M3 coupe has a 3.0L V6 and weighs 3230 lbs.

Money is not always an issue, but having to stop every 150 miles to fill up or carry a gas can would suck

At 65mph, that's 2h20min. If you drive that hard shouldn't you rest at some point?

Seriously, it is a good point for AB driving in Germany, but even at high speeds on the highway, you will have to rest before running out of gas.

    3 Year VDS:

Highest ranked "Premium Sporty Car" the Lexus SC430 - don't make me laugh!! Who says it's a sporty car?

I owned one for a short time and it may look sporty, in a way, but certainly doesn't drive sporty or sound sporty or feel sporty or handle sporty.

The problem with quality at so-called cheap prices is that it lacks all the above - plus soul and character. It's for soul and character that we pay the extra premium.

    Actually it's a 3.2 liter, not 3.0.

Amazing how it's get worse mileage than my 5.7l V8 with 405HP stock

Thank you, sir, for the link. I now understand the model to which you were referring.

Is it possible the reason your 5.7L V8 achieves better mileage than the 3.2L I6 is partly due to the shift lockout feature?

I could see that coming into play for city mileage, but not highway. Shift lockout wouldn't help in that scenario

    Longer 6th?

Re: Audi says its sensational R8 will win..

The Z06 has a lower 6th and final drive, but also has as additional 2 cylinders and 2.5 liters. I can see why the M3 has such a tall rear to improve acceleration, but at .85 ratio 6th gear is pretty high. It seems like the car could have avoided the guzzler tax if they went with less gearing. The rear has a 3:62.1 ratio which is pretty high by street car standards. That explains why the car accelerates so well, but also gets poor mileage.

But we are getting off topic, so we'll save this for another thread.
