My wife wants a Tesla. Now she asks me how long is delivery for the 3 , to replace her Mini clubman JCW.

Tesla is the new iPhone. People find it so cool , different , new, modern and absolutely want one.

Realistically, the wait for a Model 3 is no less than two years from now.

If Tesla wasn't able to buy the NUMMI (GM/Toyota joint-venture) plant in Fremont, California for pennies on the dollar after GM went bankrupt, as well as getting large tax subsidies from the State of California, Tesla would not be in business today.................

Correct.  TSLA only survives through the largess of the U.S. taxpayer.

Incredibly ugly...like every Tesla (IMO). The tech is interesting, but the design is miles away from my tastes.

I think it looks better than 50% of the sedans out there, with its simple lines and designs.

Went to the Autoshow last week and I found the new front end of Lexus sedans and SUVs are ugliest of all.

Aren't all the US car companies only still in business today because of the Tax payer...2009?

General Motors and Fiat Chrysler did receive taxpayer funds through the Treasury Department as part of the restructuring under Section 363 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.  General Motors, FCA, Ford and other automakers also did receive funds through the Department of Energy to promote alternate energy sources as part of a loan program.  These types of loans are relatively common.  However, these automakers, unlike TSLA and other EV producers, were not startups in the auto industry but companies with severe structural issues relating to pension and healthcare liabilities and whose financial positions became perilous during the credit freeze that began in August 2007.

For one success EV company, Tesla, there are too many failed, government funded projects to count.  The federal government should not try to be a venture capitalist, picking winners and losers.  The same should apply to the federal government forcing the restructuring of the General Motors and Chrysler; the markets are more efficient than government spending.

If you are American guy, than I understand why you think that. At the end of the day Tesla is primarily targeted on American buyers. Tesla can compete with European manufacturers only in terms of specific powertrain. On all other aspects, Tesla fails big time.

Unless BMW comes up with a mid size i3 (would that be i5???) I will be buying this as a family car for the other half. I would have bought i3 or Model S if they were bigger (i3) and smaller (model S)

I havent heard much from BMW re their i models, and have no idea if the i3 is deemed successful...? But pressure from Tesla might force them to do an e-3 series.

That would be great if they did. Electric car is really perfect for us. I live in the city centre and most trips I do are between 5-10km.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

So about $8b worth of orders. Also he mentioned minimum 215 miles range and minimum 6s 0-60 for the base version with better version available like AWD dual motor or more range and/or more speed. Auto pilot hardware and super charger capabilities (FYI that was optional on the first S).

My garage has finally installed some chargers but word on pricing yet for usage. If the third row of the X is confortable and enough height for legs, will have to at least consider it vs a GLS 63 AMG.

    Washing machine, fax machine, toaster..

As an appliance, it appears to be a good one.

Is today the day we see the passion and emotion of owning a car starting to recede?

Hopefully the Europeans will do EVs with more style and elegance.

I love NA engines. That's why my 991.2 GT3 order. I loved turbos but that's wearing thin. I love the Instant throttle response of a NA engine. Then you drive an electric car and go oh boy this is amazing throttle response. Guess I just miss the noise.  Oh and changing gear. Instant power and overtaking and leaving people at the lights. Err no.

Waiting to get my refreshed P100D.

I think the last US car with that much first year demand was the 1964 mustang.

Apple has a electric car coming out for the 2019 model year. It will have much the same technology, but a new security feature that autodetects if you get locked out and then automatically calls FBI roadside.assistance.

I meant that they now have to deliver to the specs and data as "promised" at the presentation, including production start-up date, performance -- incl. between-charge range, price. etc.. Otherwise those $1000 returnable deposits could melt like spring snow.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

I agree fritz. 200k pre-orders would be serious number if potential buyers placed $3500 non-refundable deposit as 10% of total value of car. Putting returnable $1000 people just want to have place in waiting line.

Fritz, I understood what you meant....I'm just saying that I've heard countless Silicon Valley presentations full of "promised" features and functions that never materialized. Smiley

    Re: Tesla Model 3

The pre-order isn't as impressive as it sounds. It sounds like a lot because Tesla is the only company that sells directly to customers, and in this case it is a volume model as well.  If Ford and GM sold directly to customers, they'd have millions of pre-orders. Because major manufacturers have so much capacity and because dealers are guaranteed to have large inventory, it would be odd for them to have large pre-orders. Most people buy off the lot and most volume cars are available in just about any specification. There's really no reason to pre-order volume cars from Ford or GM. You can easily find a car in inventory somewhere, and if you order it, they can easily prioritize build-to-order cars to arrive sooner.

It's also a tiny deposit amount and completely refundable. Let's see $5K, non-refundable deposit numbers...

    Re: Tesla Model 3

It's all relative, they have 3 years of Porsche volume production in pre-sale for a car we don't even have all the specs of. Pretty good IMHO.

DJM84, please don't forget the P90D smokes everything out there in 0-60 except very powerful cars and has low center of gravity (but a high total weight), instant torque is not something to downplay.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

Not disputing it is quick. Nor that there is some clever technology present.

I am fortunate to have a R on order - arrives in Oz later this year. It will be driven 3-4 times per week and it will make me smile every day, even if I have to walk past it for something bigger due to kids with guitars/saxophones/cricket bags/friends etc. I think I will feel exactly the same way about the car in 10 years time. There are lots of cars out there that would make me feel exactly the same way.

I cannot envisage a Tesla ever generating that level of emotion. Given that plug-in electric or fuel cell vehicles seem to be our future as daily drivers, I am hoping that the Europeans or other US manufacturers will be able to inject some passion into the product. At the moment the Tesla is like the latest HP PC - very good at what it does but do you think twice about renewing it few years?

It will be a sad day when the car completely loses its ability to inspire emotion. I hope we never see it!
