    Need new gearbox

Ok, after a bit more than 256'000km, including 16'000 of them with the Sportec stage 3 setup (542 HP, 788Nm), my gearbox is finally giving up. It's ben sounding a bit weird for a long time (before the stage 3 conversion), but my last trip to the Nürburgring gave it the last shot.

So should I replace it with an original one? Or rather go for a X50 (it's different, right?) or a GT2 one?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

It is always amazing to read about the current mileage of your 996TT

Should you ever intend to sell it you may consider selling it to Porsche. They may show it in their museum - as an example of the quality of Porsche sports cars...

    Re: Need new gearbox

Indeed its amazing!!! I'd definately go for a GT2/X50 reinforced and steel syncro 'box. Mercedes bought back a E200D with a 1.8million km to a portuguese and nearly offered him a new one I bet Porsche will make you one hell of a deal to get yours.

    Your mileage just awesome!
I wonder if my F1 gearbox will last that long
    (JUST KIDDING!!)

    Re: Need new gearbox

    :-)
I got 217'000km out of the clutch and 257'000km out of the gearbox. All this with quite a few track-days. Not bad, not bad...

FYI, I'm going to have a new std gearbox installed. No way to do a part-exchange with a X50 one, so it would make things muuuch more expensive. And the GT2 version doesn't fit (awd). Might have some oil pump installed later, we'll see.

    Re: Need new gearbox

Awesome mileage. I'm always questioning myself if a 100000 km or more 996TT is a nice buying. What do you think based on your experience? How much have you spent in maintainance since 100000km? Were are you exactly in Switzerland?

    Re: Need new gearbox

    Respect Pierre!
This kind of mileage says a lot about the quality of the car (and its driver as well undoubtedly). With this track-record you don't need to look for anything else then a standard replacement gearbox.

Strangely, I just happen to experience some trouble with my 996 TT gearbox, at 40.000 km only... It happens when I decelerate in 2nd gear, off-throttle, that once and a while the gearlever just kicks out of its postion into neutral . I told my Porsche Centre about it and they will check it out next wednesday. Someone else experienced this before??

    Re: Need new gearbox

    Yes.
If you look in forum there is a post on prices of used 996TT.
In there someone is reporting this problem for 2003 models.
    Have a look in there

Phil, the popping-out-of-2nd-gear phenomenon is quite common with the Turbo and independent of mileage (could happen at 2000 or 200.000 km). If you still have warranty, Porsche will probably replace it for you.

Pierre, if I were you, I'd send an e-mail to Porsche marketing and explain your situation to them. I'm sure they could fix you up with a shiny new X50 gearbox for a very good price (even free, perhaps?), in return for the donation of your gearbox for the Porsche museum, along with some photos of your escapades (the mountain pass in the snow thing really impressed the hell out of me ).

I COMPLETELY agree with that! I'm sure they'll be happy to see your car. Mercedes a few years ago gave a new Merc to a portuguese taxi driver which accumulated 1,8million kms and they have his car on they museum today!

    Re: Need new gearbox

Wouldn't PAG be happier if the car was not modified by Sportec?

Unfortunately, the car's no longer under PAG warranty. Do you have an idea on the way to fix it? What pieces need replacement? Is it a sophisticated intervention? What's the probable cost?

I am not an owner, so sadly I cannot help you with first-hand experience. There were a lot of threads on 6speedonline.com and Rennlist.com regarding this issue. North American market mostly, but it's the same gearbox. I'll see what I can dig up and send you a couple of links, which will hopefully be of some assistance.

HAHA! Porsche already got my first engine with 217'000km, and now my gearbox with 257'000km. I'm still waiting for their invitation to discuss my next car...

Phil, I've also read that the pop-out problem with 2nd gear is quite common. Since it's a known problem, Porsche might fix it for you at a good price, even though your car isn't under warranty anymore. Try it!

That's very bad business from Porsche. Seeing how they pride themselves with quality and durability, it should be a privilege for them to replace your gearbox for free. However, Wendelin obviously rather drives trains than takes care of loyal customers.

That link brings very bad news unfortunately.
Full transmission replacement to the tune of 11.000 USD .
I'll need to sit around the table my Porsche Centre rep.

Yes, sit down with him and also explain to him that it seems to be a common problem, before any figures come into play. Depending on the dealer, Porsche might decide to pay for the repaie, if you prove that the problem is common enough.

This is quite common and Porsche is blaming it on the driver. My long, sorry saga is here:

Porsche could not have handled this worse, and I may never buy another PAG car becasue of it.

    Re: Need new gearbox

    Mike,
I've read about your misery and it pretty much scared the hell out of me. However I seem to be lucky. Today I picked up my car at the local Porsche Centre and they fixed it by retuning the gearlever cables. Wrong cable command tension led to 2nd gear changes that did not always engage fully causing it to "pop-out". I've driven since then and it works perfect again .
