Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seats?

I'd really like to get the GT3 and the only reason I'm not is the lack of rear seats. I didn't choose the 911 over other candidates because of the rear seats though.

One of the big selling features of the 911 is the rear seats. Without the seats I would have purchased something else. My three year old son absolutely loves going for drives in this car. Without the rear seat this would not be possible. It is the only real sportscar that can accomadate the entire family.

I agree 100%. Having rear seats was a major feature for me. Sorry but one of the joys of driving the P-car is having the top down with my wife and kids. We took a stroll today with the temp a nice 72 degrees. I can say without a doubt I would not buy a 911 if there was no rear seats.

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seats?

Rear seat belts and child seats can be installed in a GT3. But there may be insurance issues.

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seats?

Because if you only need two seats you'd get a Boxster / Cayman?

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seat

I am a married man with 1 baby boy - no AMV8 or R8 for me, sadly. yes, would not consider 911 if was not for the 2 rear seats.

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seat

As a multiple 911 buyer over the years I'm just oriented to the amount of space that any 911 provides. I pack accordingly. I just don't need to make my life any more complex by changing all that around,--and yes, I have had someone in the back seats already! So--it has gotten use,--but I suspect Cynthia would not want to try THAT again.

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seat

I need and I use the 2 rear seats. I have 2 daughters (14 and 12) and our 996 is the only car we have .... so the 996 is a family car and a sports car as well ...

I have to admit when we are going on vacation the four of us it is a bit tricky .... we need to call Hertz and rent a car !!!

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seats?

Even if the R8 was a much better performer, would still get the 911s, the R8 looks to way to racey for me, same rational why I would never buy a ferrari or any of that ilk . Sort of like being married for many years, lots of hot babes walking down the street, love to try them out for awhile, BUT, thats not what you really want to go home to live with ( or is it )

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seats?

Agree. I have an X5 for the wife and two kids (3 and 6) however I still ordered a 997S as I need to ocassionally collect the kids from school. I would suggest for children under the age of 5 to have a booster seat otherwise it may be a bit too claustrophobic. The 997S is also my daily driver and very practical. Why not an M3 or RS4?... Well as they say, there is no substitute.

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seats?

Absolutely did not choose the 911 for the back seats. In fact, coming from a 986, I was kind of sorry to loose the two-trunk setup:

    - It's a lot easier to load luggage in the back trunk than squeeze it into the back seat past the front seats
    - the wind deflecter (I have a Cab) is more integral to the design of the Boxster and I left it in place all the time; can't do that with the Carrera; and it takes space when it's not installed.
    - It's always fun showing people that the Boxster has two trunks, no (apparent) engine, and goes really fast

    That being said,
    - I've already had two occassions to use the back seats for passengers in the 5 weeks I've had the Carrera;
    - I enjoy being able to put a bag, briefcase or pocketbook in the back seat rather than always having to open the trunks; and
    - I don't miss having to sort the baggage between "heat resistant" (goes in the back trunk) and "will probably melt" (goes in the front trunk).

Re: Do we get a 911 only because we need rear seats?

I don't know about hauling the kids... they are grown. I use the rear seat for three things:
Surfboard, Golf Clubs and to recline for 15 minute naps on long drives.
Oh ya, I'm 6'-2" and I don't fit in the mid engine designs.
    Lastly:
Have you looked at the space under the bonnet in a C4? I can hardly store the hardhat and a clipboard when I visit construction sites.

    What Rear Seats?

I have mine folded down and will likely never use them.

I bought a 911 for the car, I have always wanted one and at this level of car wouldn't even consider anything else. (except for the turbo).

    Re: What Rear Seats?

Interesting enough... My insurance for my 997 is considerably less (nearly one-half for same coverage) than the fees for my wifes 380SLK. According to my agent, it is the "4 seats"

Folded down rear seats for extensive periods will crease and mark the leather.

    Re: What Rear Seats?

Just back from the Hershey Swap Meet.... No time to read this whole sucker, but here's my points....

    * Nope, I bought my 911 because I love everything about the styling, the performance, the packaging.

    * If the rear seats were not there, I'd never notice. I treat the car as if it were a 2-seater anyhow.

    * Even if I was to place one of my children back there, I would consider that to be cruel and unusual punishment. Not even a kid could be comfortable or happy back in that little cave.

    * Nor do I want little shoes kicking and scratching the painted surfaces on the back of my lovely and as-new sport seats..

I'm afraid that my 911, for all practical purposes, has been a 2-seater automobile. In going on 2 years of ownership, I've only placed a youngster in back once or twice, and they were sure to let me know that they were NOT pleased about the situation, and that if I didn't drive my super-crew truck next time, I was in trouble...

    Re: What Rear Seats?

    My 997S has 4 seats ?
Mine just has a flat cargo space back there .

    I thought that's what 997 4S stood for. Lol

    Child seats

I'm contemplating a GT3 vs. C2S. Back seats are somewhat of an issue, because I have 4 and 1 year old children. I went to the dealer with my Britax booster to test it. It does not fit squarely on the seat bottom, but is better with the bottom cushion removed. Even then, the passenger seat would have to be all the way forward to fit a pair of legs back there. Forget the seat behind the driver, unless your passenger is totally sideways. I understand Porsche has custom child seats, but I don't think they'd solve all the problems. Bottom line, the rear seats aren't very practical for humans.

BTW, it is legal to use a child seat in the front passenger seat, but it is not as safe for obvious reasons. The airbag has to be turned off. Porsche can install a switch to do this.
