The Audi R8 suddenly makes the 911 look very conservative. It is the embodiment of beauty in an ultra modern, sophisticated style. I like this car - it's going to be a massive success - Audi won't be able to make them fast enough to meet demand.

I will probably get one but it'll be the V10. It does however depend on how the R8/10 design ages. Today the car looks great... I don't know how I'lll feel about it in a year or so. For me this is where the 911 scores... the concept is about 40 years old and it has aged so so well.
I agree that the 911 looks quite tame and conservative compared to the agressive looks of the Audi. I would need to see one in the flesh as well before I would put my name down for one... but there's a strong chance of it happening... but then I also would like a Ferrari... and a Ferrari is a Ferrari...hmmm... in either case I know that the waiting list is going to be long and I need to decide soon.

Yeah I am thinking of putting my name down for one as well but I don't even know if I can get one in Australia! Anyone (espeically those in the UK) knows if it will be built in RHD? We can only drive RHD cars here. I will probably try to keep the 997 if I can a R8. To me the 911 is still the ultimate daily driving sports car.

I hope you're right, but that is not the history. When the European version of the E36 M3 came out in the early 1990's and got 321hp (and the then current 911, the 964, was making 250hp), the next 911 in 1994 (993)received only 270hp. Next version of 993 (Varioram) had 285hp and the 996 in 1998 received 296hp a fews years later (several years after 321hp from M3)...

I think that is likely, but that is not going to keep up with the 420hp from Audi and BMW.
20hp increase to the Carrera S is only 5.6% increase - pretty lame and barely noticable when driving (especially if they let the car gain weight). I think they need to dramatically increase power on the 997 and reduce weight with the 998 (new aluminum structure?)...

Maybe it is just me, but I am not really that excited about the stying of the R8. I don't really like the "big mouth" look of the current Audis. I also don't like the carbon fiber side panel. Something about the side profile and the fender flares.......And most importantly.....it is an Audi. I had two Audis many years ago and got to know the mechanics at my local dealership on a first name basis. You name a part and it broke. Liked them just fine when they were running, they just didn't run without problems often enough.
I just don't think it is a style that will age well.
Not horrible by any means and I may have to drive one just for comparison sake. But, my first impression is that there are other cars out there that are more to my liking.

Phil, that is my my concern. I don't dislike the car, I just don't know whether it will become an icon. I love design in general and my choice of cars is greatly influenced by that. This is where for me the 911 scores so highly.
Therefore I shall enjoy and relish my 997 C4S for some time to come.

Yuck. Looks like it was styled for the Ferrari crowd. Vulgar. I'm sure it will get a lot of looks. BUT consider: Rice clear engine cover. Really ugly looking rear and front bumpers with the slants. And worst of all, what's with the darker grey panels on the side? Looks terrible. 997 looks much better.

I really doubt that in 30 years the R8 will be an icon, sure it looks agressive, however, almost vulgar and as time goes on it will get old and this vulgar style is what we will only see.
I'm positive the 911 sales won't be hurt by the R8 because
- First it does not have the history to back it up.
- Second it really lacks of class compared to the 911.
- Third, there is no back seats.
- Fourth, it is not stealth enough.
- Fifth, performance mentioned by audi seems weak for a V8.
- Sitxth, right now the R8 has wow factor from a new car let see what happen three year from now...
Side panel look tacky IMO.
