    997 s to M5

Hi everyone. Im sure this has been done to death. I was wondering how many people have gone from a 997 s to a bmw M5.If so can you give me your thoughts for example do you miss the 997, are you happy with M5 ect. The reason i ask is that my partner is expecting. The M5 looks like a good choice to go with.Yes you can have a baby seat in the 997 but its still all a bit cramped. I know they are two complete different cars but your thoughts would put my mind at ease. Cheers.

    Re: 997 s to M5

The first, instinctual reaction to the coming of a newborn in a car-guy's life is to go -> SEDAN. It initially seems obvious that four doors is more convenient than two for ingress/egress of a helpless bundle of joy ensconced in a baby seat.

What I found was that sporting sedans aren't enough better than a 911 to be worth the change. They're not configured to be decisively better for changing diapers (etc.) which will quickly become apparent after a number of outings in a sedan with Baby.

A sedan may have a slight advantage in swinging a baby seat out from the rear over a 911, but this lasts for only the first six to nine months. How many outings will you and the mother make with baby in YOUR car in the first year? After the toddler stage begins, one won't be taking a bucket-like baby seat in and out at each destination. The back of a 911 is perfect for kids beginning with toddlers and lasting through elementary school.

I predict that mom will gravitate to a small SUV or mini-van for her own use. Those vehicles have a higher, more convenient seat cushion position to use as a changing table and require no awkward stooping to prevent baby's head from whacking the upper edge of the door opening when entering or leaving the vehicle.

After the second one arrives she'll be thinking Benz GL450 or Lexus GX470. How else does one transport a soccer team?

    Re: 997 s to M5

thanks w8mm. Makes a lot of sense thanks for replying.

    Re: 997 s to M5

I had the same thoughts 2 years before, because of the same reason.
Do it like I did. Keep you 911, and buy small sedan with 4 doors. We chose the A3 Sportback, its more then enough for everything, as soon as you have 1 or may 2 childs. You can also drive on holiday since the trunk is big enough. And as stated above, as soon as the children get a bit older, they fit perfectly on the back seats of a 911.

    Re: 997 s to M5

We carried our 1.5 year old nephew all summer in the back of a 911 cab, it was perfect. But I don't see our baby back there before 9months/1y old.

May be you would like to know, that I have gone in the rear seats lots of times, and of course lots and lots of my friends, some times the 2 rear seats ocupied by them...

I am 1.86meters tall ....Of course going in the back seats its not as comfy and in about 10-15min journey my back starts suffering, but anyway, as far as I know, from what my friends have told me and from my experience in the back seats, I would sacrifice this back suffer for the love and passion of this cars!!!

    Re: 997 s to M5

M5 is an awsome car but in a different class all together and should not be compared to the 911. They are two different souls for two different purpose. Why not one of each

    Re: 997 s to M5

I bought my 997S from a guy who went to the new M5 which apparently has more space to store golf equipment :-D

    Re: 997 s to M5

EDZ61 i would love both but at 25 i really dont have the money avery nice thought though. i have bought my partner an e class merc so everything im sure will be fine. But i have to admit the M5 is growing on me.

I hear you buddy, I love the M5 too. I would not trade my 997S for an M5 but I have to admit the M5 rides beautifully and if I could have one in my garage without worrying about the payment and without worrying about selling my other toys I would do it. Do what makes you happy buy the M5 and enjoy it then in a few years buy another Porsche. You never know what the universe has in mind for you next. Think big, you can have and do anything you want.

    Re: 997 s to M5

If I needed to move from a 997S, it wouldn't be the M5 or M6. Although they are both great great cars, I just can't accept their looks. The M5 looks hideous to me. The worst Bangle design of the bunch. The M6 is close behind.

I know, I know - the engines are fabulous - but I'm not the kind of guy who can fall for a woman who is brilliant at everything but ugly!

Why don't you consider an AMG Merc like a CLS63 AMG?

You are so funny man but you are right, the looks don't do anything for me. Just the performance

Since your family has already got a sedan, I guess you're after the M5 as a sports car - in which case I'm afraid you might be disappointed, coming from a 997S.

    Re: 997 s to M5

I'd dump the kid and get a stripper instead...and keep the 997 of course

    Rob997 You're 25, keep the sexier 911... buy the M5 when you're over 45

    Re: 997 s to M5

I have both M5 and 997C2S, 1 wife and 1 child.Different animals. For sheer power, the M5 is awesome. Handles like a big car on steriods, but it is a big car. The 997S X51 is a sportscar with GT pretensions.
I use the M5 when I have my family together. We also used the 997 in europe when we picked up the car last year. Virtually useless without the roofrack and thule case and even then it was just uncomfortable to travel with a family. Did the same for the M5 this year. Worlds apart for GT travel with twisty roads on the side so much so I'd choose the M5 everytime.
However, after dropping the wife and kids off, I'd head to the Ring. Performance wise, the 997s X51 is that bit faster. But I used Yoko R compounds for the M5 and if the 155 limit wasn't there, I'd say it'd be as fast or faster laptime wise. For feel, the 997S is a scalpel bred for the job and easier to keep going consistently, the M5 needs to be worked hard and was hardly nimble, but the R compound tires and 500hp made it fun.
My personal take is: M5 fun to pracitical ratio us 8.5:10, the 997sX51 10:7.
For a dirty weekend away sans child, we'd sneak away with the 997.

    Re: 997 s to M5

Thanks eggplant thats the kind of reply i was looking for.

    What about a smaller coupe?

Have you considered waiting for a new M3 or even the RS4? The M3 would be a nimbler car than the M5 and 420 hp won't be bad.

Btw I made a mistake. I used PZero Corsas at the Ring for the M5. The Yokos were on another car.

    Re: 997 s to M5

    Hello,

I drive a Boxster and when we got our first baby, I decided to see how it could be worked out keeping the Boxster. My wife got an A3 Sportback which became the family car. I've been now driving my son to day care with the Boxster for the last, and first 16 months and I'm glad I kept it. On warm days, we even drive with open top, as speed is slow going there. Needless to say that at 16 months, he loves it already!!! Furthermore, on the front seat, the seat (and the baby) is very easy to install. My best advice: keep your 911 and experience it. You'll be the happiest Dad!!! In the worst case, changing car takes a few days...

    Re: 997 s to M5

I have considered a new M3 but at my local dealer they claim there is an 18 month waiting list. A good friend went from a 996 turbo s to the rs4 for financial reasons. He loves it so i guess i could look into that. Oliver-do you have the porsche seat?? BTW i used to have a boxster and i think it must be one of the most enjoyable cars i have ever owned. Enjoy !!
