    Tesla Model 3

$35K base, 0-60 in under 6s, 215 mile range, comfortably fit 5 adults. Entire roof is more or less glass. Will have larger battery sizes and offered single or dual motor.

Interesting interior. Looks like a steering wheel and a Mac. Apparently 115K pre-orders and delivery isn't even until the end of 2017.

One thing to keep in mind is that the prices are usually already factoring in tax savings. If it's $35K and factoring in $7500 in tax savings, then it's actually $42500. I also read an article on US tax rules regarding these EV tax savings. Apparently the $7500 is limited to the first 200K EVs a company sells, then it become $3750 and halves again over the next year. So far Tesla has sold about 50K cars in the US and expected to sell 90K more this year. If the 3 deliveries don't start until the end of the 2017, then those large savings may disappear very quickly, significantly increasing the price.

That screen, while odd, is lights years better than the stupid screen on the Model S.

They have actually put in some design thoughts into doing a touch screen in a car, instead of just backyard hacking a computer monitor into a car.

Probably to avoid the bright flashes of normal cameras.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

VERY NICE! I love it. It looks great, but I was hoping for that under 4 sec to 100km/h.. Maybe the top D90S or w/e.

I wish for more high-res pics right now? Anyone?

Incredibly ugly...like every Tesla (IMO). The tech is interesting, but the design is miles away from my tastes.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

Tesla design is anonymous and derivative .. just like a washing machine

    Re: Tesla Model 3

Unless BMW comes up with a mid size i3 (would that be i5???) I will be buying this as a family car for the other half. I would have bought i3 or Model S if they were bigger (i3) and smaller (model S)

    Re: Tesla Model 3

Free supercharging for Model 3 means it will be a line up for Model S/X owners at the stations...

    Re: Tesla Model 3

The car doesn't look like anything special, but I think it's great that they are putting it out there. There will be faster variants of this model too, including an AWD version.

I havent heard much from BMW re their i models, and have no idea if the i3 is deemed successful...? But pressure from Tesla might force them to do an e-3 series.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

The above pics are not very nice, they are some much nicer ones out there. The car looks good, a bit generic but it fits the segment it wants to address. They fixed the center console vs the S so that's good. The screen is good too but not easy to see the speed you are going? The deposits are 10 times the expectations...

Their biggest challenge will be meeting demand (and making a profit at $35k)

I am sure the average cost after options will be a lot more with maxed out spec upwards of $60k+

I like it - I think they have a great product to sell. This must break some records for fastest selling (pre-orders) in history.

No, TSLA has yet to record a profit from making cars.  It has, however, earned a profit from the sale of numerous tax/pollution credits.

The transition to mass market volumes will be a challenge with TSLA stressing the need for its Nevada-based Gigafactory coming online to produce lower priced battery packs.  There's many if's and what's associated with this strategy and a challenge to meet this tentative delivery schedule, especially given the company's delays on past product.

The revenue raised from the returnable deposits isn't that great when one considers TSLA's competitors earn significant multiples of that number each and every day.  BMW and Mercedes-Benz, for example, sell roughly 8,000 units per every business day, yielding approximately $360 MM, if the average unit selling price is $45,000.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

Its incredibly generic-looking car (like all American cars in last two decades). Tesla could grab some profit until big German players dont come in game with their electric models, so I assume this car could have nice selling numbers until 2020.

I watched live streaming and I must admit it was painful to watch. Paid public that yells and laughs on every word from Musk, while Musk alone have problems talking fluently.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

I highly suspect no one was paid to be there - tickets were very hard to come by. The cult following of Tesla is beyond the high of Apple now if you ask me.

No one will be close with a comparable product for years to come. The Tesla brand is strong!

    Re: Tesla Model 3

They aren't a paid audience, they are fans...

No one is expecting Tesla to make money anytime soon, they are spending massive amounts of R&D to launch new lines of cars and build a huge factory. Their design could be better as their interior.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

What's 180,000 pre-orders in the overall scheme of the global auto industry.  Ford, as another example, produces 35,000 cars per day.  That's significant especially since Tesla does not have the production capabilities for the volumes required to service the pre-orders.

Let's resume this conversation after Tesla actually release the production version of the Model 3 and has ramped its production volumes.  At this point in time, this is still vaporware.

    Re: Tesla Model 3

I like the design a lot, except for the nose, which is disconcerting (feels like something is missing), not to mention ungainly.

Yeah, they decided not to put a fake radiator grille there and that seems weird to those of us used to seeing them.  Most electric cars have some sort of grille for familiarity, even though it has no function.  I agree that its shape is strange up there too...

    Re: Tesla Model 3

@Grant If we have generic-looking cars on market already, that doesnt mean we need more  But like I sad, I didnt expected something appealing from American car company anyways.

@SciFrog Take a look on video from unveiling and you will see, it was so pathetic. For example, when Musk said they had plans to make more affordable car no one reacted, and then some guy screams like crazy "yeeeey" and after that comes applause. Also when Musk had problems to say something, crowd was like "yeeeey Tesla, Tesla, Tesla". It was pathetic try to mimic Steve Jobs iPhone presentations. First of all - Musk have problems speaking/presenting, second - trying to make fans of "any car" is just silly.
