Is the GT3 right for me?

I really love the new GT3. I think it's the best looking Porsche ever. I had a deposit on the 997 turbo to replace my 997S but passed on it at the last minute. I've owned 6 911's including a modified 996 TT and just got cold feet on the new turbo. I'm sure it's an incredible car but I'm not crazy about the styling and I think it will depreciate quicky. Despite it's performance, I feel like it's losing some of the raw sportiness and character I associate with 911's. I don't want to be a poser since my track use will be limited to a few driver's eds. I'm 50 something and my wife thinks the rear spoiler is boy-racer. I have the new M5 for a cushy ride so that's covered. As you can tell, I'm trying to justify something that doesn't make a lot of sense from a practical point of view, especially since most of you would be using this car as it was intended. I just want a fast, normally aspirated sports car for weekend trips to the mountains and although the 997S does work well, it doesn't have the same degree of excitement, I imagine. Am I the only one thinking like this?

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

the new gt3 is a poseur car. sunroof, pretend gt3. but for your needs fit sound good. it's only problematic at the track

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

Just cause the GT3 has a sunroof does not mean its a poseur's car...

Drive one like it was meant to be driven and then see if its made for posing....

I actually like the ideo of it coming out with a sunroof... all the better to hear that sound

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

I am getting a GT3 and really look forward to it having owned 911S, CSL and recently an E60 M5. The M5 doesnt do it for me - lacks the emotion and sense of occasion as a road car which can be used for the track which is the clubsported 997 GT3. Now if you want to be "sensible/understated" you may want to consider a updated powerkit for the C4S with sports exhaust/short shift etc but then you are close to the GT3 price band ?

    Go on try it !

This intellectual brain-fart from a future 997 TT (TipTronic) owner. And supposedly a 997 GT3RS on order.

    Poseur Car - Classic.

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

PCNA chose to add a sunroof to their TRACK model knowing full well it prevents taller drivers from comfortably driving with a helmet on. They chose to cater to the boulevard cruisers instead of those who actually take their car to the track. PCNA would love to get massage seats and a cushy air suspension on the GT series if they could, because it's the poseurs that constitute their biggest market share.

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

I totally disagree, as we are trying our best to talk some sense into PCNA.

I am 6' 5" tall, and can comfortably drive a 997S with my helmet without any problems, I do not anticipate the sunroof being a deal killer.

Regarding the 997GT3 as a Poseur Car. Look at the numbers around the ring. Nothing Poseurish about it, the car is a true performer.

Are you speaking of the car, or the potential buyers? The heart, Soul and Lifeblood of the car has very little to do with the hole in the roof.

That being said, it is very sad that PCNA is not paying closer attention to this matter.

Next time, think twice before you start typing meaningless things

You must have long legs and a relatively short torso (I am the opposite and have trouble even though I'm considerably shorter)

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

Can you tolerate driving around town all the time in Sport Mode?

I'm in my 30's and I never would have thought how annoyed I would get with the suspension when I accidentally leave it on sport mode after the spirited driving part of my route is over.

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

yemenmocha, see that you have also a M3 ZCP. How the suspension of the M3 compares to the 997 in normal mode and sport mode? I own also a M3 ZCP and I am quite dissapointed with the suspension. It is too soft for my taste, body roll is excessive

From what you have said, I think the GT3 will suit you perfectly. Okay, the rear spoiler is a bit much for the street (my wife had the same reaction) but the car will be so much fun, you won't care

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

If you want it, its right.

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

IMO, anyone who shows up with a shiny, detailed , stoneguarded new car run by the 99% obsessive-compulsive personalities who populate these types of message boards - whether a GT3RS or a Challenge Stradale or it's less " track intended " siblings is STILL a poser in the eyes of the true amateur racers .So the huffing and pufing about " who's worthy " and helmet clearance, etc., is laughable.
They should buy a real racer , scuffed and dirty and all -stored or towed to the track.

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

If you won't be tracking the car, I would suggest a C2S with X51 and sport exhaust.

Or, for heaven's sake, the 997 Turbo is sure to be a delight - the perfect uber car for the road. It's reported to have fun handling characteristics, and it's super fast with very little Turbo lag.

Test drive a 997/997S and a 996 GT3 for a weekend. Take them to the mountains and test for desired excitement.

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

Is right for you as long as you like it, with than many 'T' you have before is time for a new thing. GT3 is made to be street legal so it should be drive on regular road not just track day used. Live is short, get the one you like and enjoy it.

Re: Is the GT3 right for me?

Thanks. The waiting list is much longer for the GT3 than the TT or X-51 and it would sure be nice to drive or ride in one first- not much chance of that... Appreciate the input everyone.
