    thicker steering wheel

hi I am new to forum, any one know where to get picture or review of the thicker steering wheel option xpa for carrera s 997

    Re: thicker steering wheel

Pictures available on the Porsche specifier. I have it on my 997 and find it more comfortable for long distance driving, easier to rest your hands.

    This is it....

    Re: thicker steering wheel

I have the XPA option and it's a bit dissappointing. Yes it's better than overly thin stock steering wheel but to call it thick is a stretch. It's not going to be anything like the thickness of a momo or M3 steering wheel. I would consider it more of what should have come with the car stock. There's been quite a bit of discussion on this before if you do a quick search.

    Re: thicker steering wheel

Having come out of an M3 with a relatively thick steering wheel I ordered the XPA thicker wheel for my 997S. I like it but think it a bit over-priced but that is nothing new that Porsche options are a "bit" over-priced.

    Re: thicker steering wheel

I have thais option too. I don't like it as I find the shape around the 10 :10 not to be to my likes!
I would not order it again.

    Re: thicker steering wheel

Look at the techart steering wheel. that is how this car should have come from factory.

    Hi Kerem,

do you have this techart steering wheel in your Porsche?

    Re: thicker steering wheel

I drove a new Turbo with it the other week and was the only thing I didn't like about the car! I would only ever order the Multi-Functional-Steering-Wheel personally.

    Re: thicker steering wheel

I will put it in the first change I get. I have the full sand beiege leather in the car and I am thinking that I will add some contrast to it. with some other carbon fiber interior parts I want to add the Techart with carbon fiber. Unfortunately in my country it costs almost 3000 Euro with core exchange so I am looking for a way to import it from another country. The mfsw I have now sucks and takes away from the driving experience. I believe that steering wheel investment is like buying another sports car. What were they thinking when putting something like that in a Porsche.

I was told at PDE in Birmingham the lumps at 10:10 are there so you don't put your hands there. Hands go at 9 and 3, per Cass Whitlow.

    Re: thicker steering wheel

Check out the Tech-Art steering wheels

You keep the Porsche Logo in the middle, but have a little Tech Art badge on the bottom

    It's nice and thick

    9 to 3 vs. 10 to 2

Depending on how you were taught one is better than the other. If you've done lots of carting 10 to 2 becomes a habit that's hard to break. One reason why I like the grips at 10 to 2 on the XPA wheel.

The M3 wheel seems too fat to me - a bit like having a fat lip after someone has hit you.

The multi-functional wheel is just horrible - thin and weedy like Kate Moss meets a cheap arcade game with distracting buttons all over it - it belongs on Playstation not in a serious sports car.

I know that..but I do sometimes, in hair pin curves for example hold the steering wheel around there... and I do not like the shape of these bumps on the back of the steering wheel

    Re: 9 to 3 vs. 10 to 2

After a test drive, I ordered the XPA as the standard wheel definitely seemed too skinny.

    Re: 9 to 3 vs. 10 to 2

Whatever! I absolutely love th the convenience of the mfsw! Wish I could have the buttons added to the steering wheels of my other cars since I habitually reach for them in my daily drivers. I must admit, the wheel could (should) be a little thicker -- but I wouldn't trade the buttons for the change. Maybe Techart's wheel is the solution. Wish it looked more like OEM though.

    Thicker Wheel

Another new option from Sept '06 is CPA, which is a mix of XPA and MFSW. I have ordered this despite the silly money charged by Porsche . No picture though as it is a new option. I am expecting my car early Oct and will post pics then. The techart wheel is beautiful though.

    Re: Thicker Wheel

My last car was a E46 M3 which had a lovely thick steering wheel. I ordered my C4S with the XPA thicker steering wheel which I find very disappointing. It is barely adequate, calling it 'thick' is stretching the imagination somewhat. It is also a pricey option that cost me US$1,600. Both my 928S4 and 968CS also had thin rimmed over-sized steering wheel.

If I were to do it again I would go for the TechArt steering wheel. I actually contacted them several times for dealers in my part of the world but they never got back to me.

Things were more straight forward before aibags came along - every new car I bought I would replace the stock steering wheel with something from Momo, Nardi, Italvolanti.... etc. etc.

Just keep in mind that all you are getting with the Techart wheel is the grip ... the center portion will be your stock Porsche OEM center/airbag. I think the TechArt logo is pretty cool - similar to the M badging on M steering wheels for BMW

    Re: Thicker Wheel

I wonder if it will have the same contours on the rim as the sport steering wheel.

    Re: Thicker Wheel

My new C4S cabrio arrives at the end of the month. My current C2S coupe I spec'd with the multi-function wheel, the convenience of which I love but I find it too big and too narrow. I hope that I won't miss the functionality too much and I certainly like the look of the sports wheel much better than the MFSW which looks like the stock item.

It is somewhat disappointing that I couldn't get the smaller, thicker rim with the multi-functionality.

Btw to be fair to Porsche they don't call it THICK here in the UK only thickER. Actually for the me its the smooth leather that also makes a difference. The standard "S" wheel is pretty rough on my delicate hands.

    Re: Thicker Wheel

The lumps are there to knock your hands off the wheel without breaking them when your front tires slam into the wall and transfer the shock to the wheel. (that's a theory anyway).

    Re: Thicker Wheel

Sorry, just one more of a million us.$02 opinion: The Carrera has the most refined delicate responsive steering in the entire industry.

Why anybody would think of putting a muscle-it-around-a-corner NASCAR-Thick wheel in it is beyond me.

    sorry... .

Also, the S wheel is advertised as thinner in grip diameter than the non-S.

I find that hard to believe or are you just pulling our leg?

I was told at PDE that the "lumps" are there to hook your thumbs at the proper 9 and 3 o'clock position now taught at high performance driving schools which replaces the "old" 10 and 2 o'clock position which was taught in years past.
