Switching order from TIP to Manual

I own a manual 996 and was planning on getting my Turbo 997 in Tip. Partially because of early good reports, but also for convenience (wife could drive, traffic). I'm having regrets and thinking of switching back to manual.

My question is this. I'd keep my order basically the same but switch off Tiptronic option. What other additions to the order do you guys recommend?

    Short shifter?

    Others?

    Thanks.

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

    LSD for sure...

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

Three thing you must have on the Turbo(manual)

    Sport chrono

    LSD

    Short shifter

    What he said +1.
Good decision, you won't regret NOT getting the sedan-like automatic tiptronic that Porsche "marketing" wants you to buy into.

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

Sport Shifter is no longer a factory installed option. (as of August 2, 2006)

    Only available as Tequipment.

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

Porsche is no longer allowing the XZX short shifter option to be placed - it will delay your build until it is removed.

If you switch from Tip to Manual RC will kill a kitten

    ???

i have the SS on my order?what must i do?Porsche remove the option or my dealer must remove it?if they don't remove it my car will delay till year 2012?

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

In the US, all dealerships received a bulletin that Porsche will not be installing any short shifters on the assembly line on ANY of the 997's. Whether or not this applies to Europe I do not know. The short shifter will still be available as a dealer installed option through parts or Tequipment.

Any idea why they won't allow the short-shifter anymore? How bad is not having it?

I don't get the second comment about the killing kittens Can you put that in newbie?

    Thanks.

    Any idea why?

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

I talk now with my dealer..

She tell me,that at least for Italy there is no problem about the SShifter..

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

Not sure why Porsche decided to do so, but it may be related to low demand in the US market and they may want to keep the production line efficiency higher by avoiding unnecessary substitutions.

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

RC is a Tip enthusiast at least for the 997 TT and there has been endless discussions to figure out which one is the best Tip or Manual?

So now it appears you moved to the "ennemy" side ....

I'm sure he is going to tell you that you just made a major mistake ....

    Just my 2 cent

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

For those of you that already have a manual Turbo with the SSK option, you'll still be getting it. It's only for NEW orders made after August 2nd that gets affected. Of course this could only be for the US market.

I would go with LSD too.

He may be right, and I'm still not sure, but clearly someone will tell me I'm making the mistake of my life either way... Thanks.

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

So, in the event I can't get the short-shifter, how bad is that? How important was the option?

Nothing to be alarmed about. Some people prefer the standard throws, finding the SS too notchy. Also, you can buy the SS from Tequipment and have it retrofitted, shou.ld you so desire.

You can always install it later. No big deal...
It is not a must have option. But it is nice to have it. I recommend it as I have it
    in my option list...

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

I had the SS on order then was notified by my salesman so we deleted it. I am actually happy because now I can try out the std shifter, and will buy the better B&M unit for about $500 less than factory.

Any advice on which post sums up his argument best? I searched but he's posted so many... Thx.

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

I think it is in this board and the thread is Rennteam Summer Party and Rennteam Summer Party II.

There is also a recent one that RC started called The "secret" about Manual vs Tip Performance.

"The dark lord of the Tip" is probably just about now leaving the back room of his pharmacy to whip up a cianide cocktail, laughing insidiously all the way. If you see both a syringe and him together at the same place, run! The force may be with you, but the mighty Tip and 680 Nm of torque are with him, so in case he misses with the syringe, he may still just plain run you over . The force is also strong with him and it is black and German .

Jeeez, Kreso, do you hear that? Did the "Dark Lord of TIP" give this poor soul the wrong pills?

Re: Switching order from TIP to Manual

Hmm... Stefan, did you forget that my wife has MA in Pharmacology and is Pharmacist as well! And we both have Pharmaceutical business... So, Andrej is wrong here. I am lawyer by profession but, I probably the best lawyer in Pharmaceutical business...

So, do not worrie "Manual Jedi Knights" will be with you always.
Wrong pills? Just a hint, there is a Croatian generic version of Viagra called Dinamico, more powerfull version is Dinamico T(T for TIP)!!
If you take that one you will not need a stick any more. All job will be done AUTOMATICALLY(in your dreams)...

BTW, seriously, TIP is a excellent choice for people that simply crave about autobox! But, not for true manual gearbox fan...

I'd say with much certainty that Prozac and Jack Daniels don't mix .

I have the Turbo on order , am middle aged but like a sporty car so I initially ordered the car with SS. After my order I had the opportunity to test drive the Turbo with SS , I had the car for 3 hours. When I returned the car I canceled the SS option. It is really uncomfortable and not fitting the car. The feel of the gearchange must go with the feel of the clutch IMO. This is not the case with the SS. Clutch is extremely light and SS is extremely heavy/notchy.
Also know that the standard shifter is more than short enough. So it comes down to either short shifting with comfort and ease (standard) or extreme short shifting with no comfort and very tiresome in traffic. This is my personal view.

Very helpful. What makes the short shifter so bad in traffic? Isn't short easier? I might be really clueless...
