    PDK

    Auto-Motor-Sport (page 58) from today:

Porsche will present PDK (porsche double clutch) at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt (September) for the 911.

    Re: PDK

Anyone have a clue which models Porsche will lead with for introducing PDK?

I have heard different things. Some sources say Porsche will start off with Boxter/Cayman models as the PDK can't handle the power of 911 range yet. Then they will work up the power-tree as the PDK is further developed.

Other sources say they will start with the introduction of the GT2, so completely opposite to the first rumour.

I've been personally told by my OPC that PDK won't be out on the Turbo until at least MY08.

    Re: PDK

Also, please can someone tell me why Porsche couldn't just steel the DSG type gearbox off the Bugatti Veyron now that they have so many shares in VW?

...that would certainly get round the power handling issues of PDK that Porsche are said to be having.

    Re: PDK

    This is an effing joke.
Almost every manufacturer makes a paddle shift available and the company that invented it provides no such technology.
It's appalling, I don't know about anyone else in here but I'm finding it harder and harder to hold this candle I've been holding for Porsche.

    Re: PDK

I am more interested in the DSG double clutch and not so much the paddle shifts which tend to be a bit jerky in powerful cars.

    Here's a little info on it: http://cars.about.com/od/thingsyouneedtoknow/a/ag_howDSGworks.htm

So, from my understanding the only road cars which currently have DSG type gearboxes are Audi/VW models and the Bugatti Veyron. So it's still a relatively new technology for road car implementation.

Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

    Re: PDK

Porsche created and developed PDK 30 years ago for racing. They used it in the 917 I think at Le Mans. So it's not a new idea by any means. It has taken some time though to engineer it for the road where refinement, reliability, longevity, and noise are far more critical to the buyer. Just as important if you're Porsche you need to keep the weight down and that takes time to balance out with the objectives listed above.

I'm sure it will be nice, but I still prefer to tie my own shoe laces rather than have velcro fasteners...

    1. Bugatti DSG is far too heavy and big

    2. Borg Warner has manufacturing limitations and the company which commited first (VW - and that includes Bugatti) got preferential treatment. Porsche was just slow, so they had to wait. Glad it's coming through though. Porsche has been milking and not investing for too long IMO.

    Re: PDK

    Interesting thanks

    Re: PDK

Well, I've heard that the double-clutch gearbox was developed by Porsche for the 956/962 racing cars, so for me the issue with the PDK resistance to the power of all present Porsche cars just does not exist!

As Le Chef said though, the question with the longevity, refinement, noise and etc. with the new transmission is very important too...

But I have no doubt that Porsche are completely ready with the PDK, and now the main questions are when exactly they will offer it on the market, and how great the advantage of the PDK will be over the present gearboxes on the auto-market.

    Re: PDK

I'm sorry but bugattis dsg gearbox isn't made by Borg Warner but by british specialists Ricardo(very popular for their racing gearboxes, LMSeries).

Yes and no - some parts of it, particularly the elctronic ones where developed by BW, but it is manufactured by Ricardo. In fact BW was not happy they had to deal with it, as it didnt make them any money, but involved much development effort. but they got the big VW job, so they just couldnt say no.

    Re: PDK

There was an interesting article in the British magazine EVO a few months back (either EVO or CAR) that went into detail about how that small British firm designed the gearbox and the challenges involved. Im sure they used some standard components in the design along the way although I dont recall BW mentioned.
