    Tire Wear

I just picked up my turbo and it came with Michellin Pilot Sport tires. They seem worn with only 100+ miles. Is this normal, what should I expect before replacing? Most of the 100 miles was driven on the interstate driving home (70 miles). No tire burn outs or hard cornering.

    TIA

    Huh? Only 100 miles?

Please describe what you define as "worn".

How many miles were on the odometer when you took possesion of the car?

    What model Turbo (964,993,996,997)?

    Re: Tire Wear

    Mike,

The car had 16 miles when I picked her up. I noticed today when I cleaned the rims the tires didn't seem to have much tread. I'm going to ask the dealer tomorrow but thought I would ask the you guys first. I have Toyos on my 993 C2 and they are soft but still get 3~4K (rears) and 10K (fronts).

    Mike,

Forgot, shes a 997TT (Black on Black, 6 speed, LSD). I'll try and post some images sometime.

    Re: Tire Wear

Congrats on your new TT. I can't imagine having any noticable wear after only 100 miles. Have you considered using a tread depth guage?

Hmmm... Just a hunch but, from the view you get when cleaning rims, the PS2 design only shows the outside of the tyre which can look like worn tread.

Have you pushed your finger in about 3 inches where the real tread starts?

Get your head right down and take a good look right accross the whole width. (No mucky comments please, especially you Throt)

    Re: Tire Wear

    Thanks guys,

I'll take a look today and maybe consider a guage. This is my 3rd Porsche (still have my 97 993 C2) and all I can say is WOW. More than I ever expected.

    Re: Tire Wear

Chances are you are looking at the outer 2" of the tyre, which is almost slick with only 3mm deep grooves. You should find some grooves further inboard.

    Re: Tire Wear

You may find that sometimes your tyres wear quicker than the previous set, even though you havent changed your driving style.

I've put this down to a factor of incorrectly mixed rubber compound, various road surfaces which can rip into the rubber decreasing tyre life.

the only thing you can do is to check your tyre pressures when cold. possibly once week, you may find that if its not used much tyres tend to lose air quicker when not driven than when driven..

lets also not forget that both abs and esp can take their toll on the tyres as esp is in use all the time and is braking wheels when required and you probibly wont notice its working, but this will obviously wear tyres more when going around bends.
