So Porsche has to trade crushing a few cards at a cost of ?$200K? against the lost or gained sales by only offering the sunroof version of the coupe(s). It's really a simple question, although the answer is somehow unknowable.

Rumor I have heard is that the cost is closer to $3 mio to run the tests on one car. Big difference between spending a few hundred thousand and $10-15 million for a couple hundred cars.

Perhaps. I don't think we can pinpoint the exact amount without some sort of insider info/more tangible empirical data. The heuristics we utilize are pure speculation.

However, what this does point out is a flaw in the homogenized streamline production method of Porsche, i.e. creating basically one car in at least a dozen variants in order to reduce expenditures and increase profits (hence, Porsche being the most profitable car company in the world!).

Re: AHH! No sunroof delete option on the GT3 or GT3 RS.

Okay, I feel it would be remiss to point out that the 50 lbs (if the sunroof weighs the same as the 993 sunroof cited earlier) is not a net gain. It is offset by the removal of whatever roof material the sunroof replaces. I will have to admit though, that I have no idea how thick or heavy the removed section of steel (?) would be.

Anyone have a guess/feel for what the removed section of roof might weigh?

It's sheet metal! how much would 2 square feet of sheet metal weigh? I would hazard a guess at right about a pound. Look at the inside roof of a 911 race car, the middle of the roof is just bare metal and has no structural utility (in terms of crush in a role over, it does have utility in terms of lateral bracing).

That is why most racers do not replace the roof with something lighter like Aluminium sheet, there just isn't a whole lot of weight savings to be had... That's why having 50+ lbs. up there in a sunroof is cruel and unusual punishment. It's the only thing up there that weighs anything!

    Mithras,

Any chance you can get an article written on this in the next issue of Panorama? Might demonstrate a little more credibiity than just perceived griping by a few malcontents on the internet.

Re: AHH! No sunroof delete option on the GT3 or GT3 RS.

Even at a cost of $5m for testing, Porsche would have to sell a LOT more GT3s to break even. At $30,000 net profit each they would need to sell 167 MORE cars. And if the numbers suggested by BSL are close to correct, $5m is way low.
