    What would be a real fun older Porsche?

    I am tempted to get something a bit more viceral then my 997 C4S..
    What older Porsche is the most fun to drive, the most pationate, satisfying?

    I am thinking about a 993 TT with serious mods,
    or a 911 Carrera 2.7 RS look a like ( based on 911 Carrera 2.7)
    or a 'simple' 911 Carrera 3.0
    or THE 911 Turbo 3.3
    or 964 RS 3.6

    What do you think?

    depends on how stock you want the car... Visceral, the earlier the better. Everyday drivable, the later the better...

    964 Turbo 3.6 is a great car and the last "real" turbo

    2.7 RS clone can be hair-raising (depending on how it was built) and a good driver (again depending on how it was built")

    My father had a short wheel-base 911S with 2.2 pistons, ported poolished etc. with about 220 bhp. Increadibly visceral, but tough to drive all the time (not too bad though with the twin plug)

    Visceral to me is lots of rev's and low weight. Nothing rev's (or sounds) like a short stroke, so the ultimate for me would be a nice RS clone with some modern convieniences, and a somewhat de-tuned 2.8 rsr engine in it.

    There is nothing like a true lightweight 911, imho. And there is nothing like the thrill of the high-revving early motors with Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection (incredible sound and throttle response). Try to find a nice 911S or RS real or replica (1969 to 1973) and you'll be very happy (and it's a great investment too).

    I'm in the same boat, I'm almost bored of my 996. I'm thinking of getting an 87,88, or 89 Coupe or Targa. I just don't feel like I'm in a 911 driving my 996. I know it sounds very stupid, but after driving a friends 964 Roadster, and taking a test drive in an 89 coupe, I'm sold on the older ones being more fun, even if they don't go 170 mph. Nothing will ever beat the overall feel of the older ones. Let us know what you decide on!!

    Yes, in Europe that is a great car. We received a very watered-down version in North America (RS America).

    First, get a convertible. If you're looking for a visceral feeling, it's hard to beat one (no, don't use that ugly wind stop, it was designed for trucks!).

    Second, if you can afford it, definitely get a rare model. My personal favorites are:
    - '92 964 Turbo convertible (4 were built AFAIK)
    - '94 993 Turbo convertible (14 were built using the engine from the 964 Turbo 3.6)
    - a 964 Speedster with factory Turbo Look (20 built).
    Those three still have a few modern amenities such as ABS, A/C, power steering or airbags. When the money is right, I know I'm definitely getting one of those.

    If you want even rawer (also a bit easier to find), it's hard to beat a '89 930 Turbo 3.3 Slantnose cabriolet.

    Think to the 993RS also, but the one with the small rear spoiler.... that has no modifications and the engine is the 3,8 liters with 300hp.... I think that it will be a really nice car.

    And the second option for me it will be the 911 Speedster from the 1989 or the 964 Speedster that is even more rare!

    I would keep my 997 as my daily driver and have the other one as a treat
    I do not want to invest into a rare model, as I plan to spend not more then $ 50 K . Around $ 30 k would be great

    The metallic motor noise of the early 70s RSs is nuts . Sounds like the engine case/chain drive is open and in the back seat !

    The good news is, you might choose almost any 930, Carrera 3.2 or 964 (even the RS or 3.3 Turbo).

    The 930/3.2 vs 964 is more a philosophy issue than a price issue. The 964 has ABS, power steering and airbags. It also comes with the (IMHO) mandatory pop-up spoiler.
    On the other hand, the older 911s are pretty "unfiltered".

    Turbo vs. normally aspirated. I haven't driven any of the abovementioned models, so I'll have to rely on what an uncle of mine told me about his 930. The Turbo is a huge kick in your "rear compartment", but sometimes comes up when you least expect it, so you might end up too scared to fully enjoy it, unless you're actually looking for that feeling. Of course, he quickly traded it in for a 928...

    Didn't drive the 964 RS either, but I guess it feels like running on PASM Sport all the time...

    I'd go with the 930 Slant Nose Cab because it's such a different looking car. Here's a fun looking coupe.

    There is a red 964 RS with engine mods, cup exhaust, 1992, 100 000 km, says no track ( but I find that strange) for Euro 40 000 ( CHF 63000)
    Have been given this info by a neighbor rennteam member)

    He's got quite a selection of older 911s. Most of them in pretty good condition. I recommend paying him a visit. I don't know if he speaks French or English though.

    Now this a tough question. The 1988 3.2 Carrera is great fun and since it is a convertible, my first choice for sunny and warm weekends with my girlfriend. Since we're planning to keep it for a loooong time, I'm not driving it very hard (it's got only 44k kilometers). But still, it is a blast going over some passes. The engine is a joy to rev. When it's wet though, it is a handfull to drive as there are no electronic aids and the rear end behaves like our dog's tail before going for a walk.

    The 997 on the other hand is everything you're looking for in a daily driver and an occasional track toy (not that you couldn't use the 1988 as your daily commuter or the 88 Carrera on the track). As I'm not that experienced on the track, I prefer having some aids with me when I'm out there. With some more track days under my belt, I could see me in an 911/964 on the track as it would be more raw and unfiltered (and a bigger challenge to stay there). But for now, I'm glad that I have PSM as my copilot when I'm doing some rounds.

    Those are nice - only year of the 930 with 5-speed G50 gearbox (all others had 4-speed) and last year of manual steering 911 Turbo (so much more feedback than later cars)...

    A CLASSIC (pre 74) is the way to go...

    Actually I'm in the market for a 72-73 2.4L S Targa .... tough to find and rather expensive nowadays ....

    A nice one is around Euro 55,000 ($ 68,000) ...

    For sure later ones are much cheaper ...

    Right now I think the best "bang for the buck" is the 964 .... It's the first "modern" 911 ABS, Powersteering, ...

    Carrera 3.2l is a bit overrated in my view and the 993 it's seriously overrated ...

    Actually I miss my 964 C2 America Roadster (Turbo Look in Europe) a lot ... I made a major mistake selling it.

    Well I jsut bought a '97 993 Targa black/black low millage (64k km) original Targa wheels and in beautiful condition. For me the ultimate Porsche!

    Took me almost 3 years to find the example I was looking for..

    Congrats to you on having found the right one
    It seems that I'm not alone - I have just started to look for the "right" aircooled Porsche as an addition to my 987 S. It will be a car for those special moments (sunny Sundays) with maybe 4,000 km/year. I'm still going forth and back between 3.2 Carrera and 964. While I prefer the 3.2 Carrera from a design point of view (slim body, more "beetleish"), the 964 offers more bang for the buck (like mentioned by Eric Alain). My heart says 3.2 Carrera, my brain says 964 . I guess it just takes some patience -once I'll see the right one in person, I'll know...hope it won't take 3 years

    I think this type of purchase is purely emotional. It is therefore a waste of time to try to "rationalize" it.

    Go for what you love the most. The Carrera 3.2l is a fantastic car ... and the 964 as well (modern but not too refined not too GTish). Both have pros & cons ...

    I would go for I love the most AND the one that is in better shape ... Finally being patient always pay....

    100% agreed The only problem is once I'll find the right one the seller will know instantly because of this
    silly grin on my face (hard to keep the poker face...)

    I'm very patient for now I think I'm going to go for a "reconstructed" one ie fully restored from A-Z. A bit expensive though but then I'll have a "brand new" 72-73 2.4l S ....

    The other option is to buy one in a decent shape and to restore it over time ... I'm afraid the final bill will be higher.
