    Loud whining noise

My '05 997S has developed a loud whining noise which I first noticed under heavy breaking. The sound continues after stopping and increases in volume with the engine revs. It also gets louder when turning the steering wheel, which made me think it could be power-steering related?

However, after a nights rest, it is silent again until I brake heavily and then the same symptoms return.

Anyone know what may be causing this?

    Re: Loud whining noise

-heavy breaking, high revs, hard cornering - worse?

    -resting over night - better?

May want to check and see if there's a scared baby in the back seat!

    Re: Loud whining noise

Are you sure it's instigated by hard braking? Is the noise located to the front or back and can you feel anything through the steering when it's happening. Does it sound like a pump thats run dry perhaps? Does it sound mechanical or like something vibrating?

    lol guys, thanks!!

I've found the problem - the power steering fluid is very low i.e. nothing showing on the dip-stick. Only had the first service done 4 weeks ago, would have thought they would have checked that!! No warning light either for some reason?

The reason for the whine being initiated by braking must be because what fluid there is moves forward in the tank.

Now I need to establish why the level is so low and whether or not there's a leak. So it's back to the OPC again on Wednesday.

BTW - anyone know how often the fluid level should be checked??

Far as I know it only needs to be checked at regular routine inspections, as power steering fluid loss is not normally an issue. This would also explain why there appears not to be a warning light. As you discovered, there is an acoustic warning instead.

It does sound as if you may have a leak, which may be something as simple as a hydraulic union which needs retightening.

Many thanks Fritz - I'll mention that to the OPC on Wednesday.

Hey Throt - reminds me of a chat-up line:-

Guy to girl: "Do you know you've got spanner eyes?

Girl to guy: "What do you mean?

Guy to girl: "Everytime you look at me my nuts tighten!!

Essex girl is alive and well

Seems she's spending time in your car. Good for her. Glad she traded up from the boyfriend with the Capri...Does she still have the white handbag and boots btw?

Re: Essex girl is alive and well

had the same problem in my M3, where the steering fluid was low and causes a grinding noise when I corner too hard. No harm done, enjoy.

    lol @ the baby comments.

    Re: Loud whining noise

If your system is losing fluid it may be hidden by the bottom trim panels. (Particularly in the area of the steering rack). I would have the service guys figure out why you're low of fluid and where it went to. Much can actually leak into the boots at either end of the steering rack and just not seep out of there for sometime. Eventually they will, but in the meantime your system is starved for fluid and thus produces the straining sound as it is essentially cavitating.

    Re: Loud whining noise

Just collected my car from the OPC who had it for two days to fix the above problem.

Seems they have fitted a new steering rack! Can't think why it would need this after only 16,000 miles?

    Any comments.
