    Ah the beauty of F1

On a highway doing about 70 mph and I pull alongside a 997S to his left. Unfortunately I notice my exit to the right is coming up fast so I downshift from 4th to 3rd and skoot by the 997S and exited.

The 997S folows me off the the highway and pulls alongside of me and says" what a gorgeous car" and I thanked him. He then says" Boy you hit the downshift perfect; the way the engine sang as you downshifted was beautiful" I told him it wasn't me but the computer and explained I had an F1." He grinned gave me a thumbs up and drove off.

The transmission is a pleasure to drive and those that have not experienced it are missing something.

    All I can say is

Re: Ah the beauty of F1

That transmission is a work of art. The shifts are perfect. Also love how it blips the throttle.

Re: Ah the beauty of F1

Wouldn't you love it more if you were the one doing the blipping, not a computer?

I have driving manual for years and yes on many occasions I have caught the revv's perfectly but when I do I know it was more luck than skill. My experience with manual is very similiar to to many others. Matching engine revv's consistently and perfectly is done only by a very few.

So my answer is no because matching perfect revv's is at least for me luck and thus no sense of accomplishment.

Think how great you'd feel if you COULD, though!

Re: Ah the beauty of F1

On the contrary, it would be embarrassing moment if we could not execute it the way we always wanted.

We just want to enjoy the ride and not be stressed by our own ability.

I agree, Gary It doesn't really require that much skill, just lots of practice

That's my take on it. Don't get me wrong, the F1 transmission is wonderful, but not very gratifying for me, personally.

However, all of my race-car friends who are diehard manuals love F1/SMG usage for track purposes...it helps their lap times during the most stressful points of driving.

Re: Ah the beauty of F1

notta benne, I've never driven the Ferrari F430 F1, just the 360s. Could be a different story, who knows

Even more so for us mere mortals .....just focus on the racing lines and enjoy the drive.

    I agree 100%

Pretty soon it will be like: "boy that was a great lap you did around the track!" Reply: "oh no, that wasn't me, that was my choffeur, I was on the passenger side enjoying the ride"

Re: Ah the beauty of F1

I think it would be more gratifying to just say thanks to the 997S owner....

For me its a treat to drive a manual car. Ive been without my porsche for 3 months now. Horrible feeling

Re: Ah the beauty of F1

nothing like a sounds of up revving upon downshift. Thanks for sharing, Nick.

    nick,
no one matches revs perfectly with a manual shift.
the goal is to get as close as possible on a consistent basis.
it's accomplished by more than "a very few".

good thing that "s" didnt hit the gas and keep you from making your exit!
