    997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

I recently replaced the Michelin PS2 rear tires on my 2005 Carrera S with BRIDGESTONE RE960. This tire has a higher treadwear rating (400 versus 220 with Michelin), comes in the oem 295-30-13 size, is MUCH more quieter/smoother than than Michelin and costs $319 a piece on www.tirerack.com (versus $479 for Michelin). Everyone raves about the Michelins, but after 10,000 miles they ride like a buckboard and are extremely loud. Maybe they are great for tracking, but for an combined smooth ride with fantastic performance, I'd highly recommend the Bridgestone RE960.

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

Do the bridgestones have an 'N' rating? In other words, are they approved by porsche?

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

no not N rated. its an all season tire
i would go with the bridgestone re050 instead. its n rated and an oem tire.

Did you have to adjust your headlights to compensate for the lowered rear with the new 13" wheels/tires?

he must have mounted them on his rear rotors!

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

Can someone please explain to me what will happen if I put non 'N' rated tires on my P-car? I know that Porsche recommends the 'N' rated tires. Is this really just following what Porsche recommends?

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

Typically, you will end up with an RMS leak.

"N"-rated tires are versions which have been specifically tested by Porsche, or specially developed by the tire manufacturer and Porsche to optimize their characteristics, to ensure that those tires are particularly suited for use with the specified Porsche cars.

You might be able to get two specs of a particular tire brand, model and dimension, one with an "N" rating, and one without. This would imply that the spec without an "N" rating was found by Porsche not to fulfil its requirements, so the second "N" rated spec was specially developed for use on the car model it is recommended for.

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

In the UK there are stories of invalidating your insurance by not using Porsche approved tyres - i think this is more a myth than reality. after all there are plenty of 15 year old bangers running on cheap Korean tyres or even remoulds witout any apparent loss of insurance credibility.

If there is a N rated version of a tyre you want i'd always go for the N rated one - but lots of owners have their own favoiurite tyres which may not interest Porsche commercially - they may be worse, they may be better.

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

wonder if treadwear ratings are different on a given tire for N & non N. (i.e. lower on N's)

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

"N" ratings are over-hyped. I would bet that the average Porsche driver would not be able to detect any handling differences between an "N" and "non-N" rated tire of the same model. They have the same wear ratings, etc....

    Re: 997 Tire Replacement/Great Recommendation

I had very low wear ratings on the Yokohamas i had on a non-P car - they looked like new after the same mileage that i'd worn the previous contis out in (which 50% higher wear ratings). I don't think it means a lot in the real world

I'm sure this is where I fall. I don't think I can tell any difference but I'm sure there are some who can (or think they can).
