It seems to be OK for the Space Shuttle though....we spend billions to have it fixed for them to launch it in space to have them fix it again and then land for some more fixes

No it would not be OK if you build 4,000 shuttles a year and charged astronauts $200k each for the trip!

The embarrassing part here was the fact that a manufacturer of any hi-end product can deliver a $200K machinery that needs this kind of fixing within very few months of exiting the plant.
Ferrari, Porsche, Skoda or a coffeemaker...that's simply not ok.
(Ok, the fact that Nick ultimately got trapped in an embarrassing situation almost makes up for the lack of build quality )

Nick, have they fixed it?...or merely given u free vouchers to the nearest Starbucks?

Don't know of any high-end product/svc on planet....whether $200K+ cars, $100K+ watches, $10K+ suits, $1K+ bottles of wine, $50MM+ private planes, etc etc that don't occasionally have disappointing copies, except in fantasy land of those who haven't sampled enough copies to know otherwise....

Know guys who freq buy new cars who've occasionally gotten copies of new F/P/MB w/numerous glitches...but most jaded car guys would prob agree that any new 430/599 is likely to be roughly as reliable as any new 997TT/65/63 will prove to be: quite reliable in context of increasingly complex, continually updated/debugged, networked tech of any latest-tech performance/GT car....

Always will be a trade-off btwn enjoying/early-adopting latest tech innovations vs inevitable bugs in early copies.....and Luddites who favor old tech can hope for perhaps greater reliability (though not necessarily ), but face likely net losses in performance/safety/comfort/convenience/low-mtce of latest tech....

One more reason to order the 6spd manual. Save $10k on price, have more enjoyable driving, and save yourself a huge bill if you ever have trouble with the F1 gearbox after the warranty...

    Not really....

Guys who get new F@MSRP in US simply get a new, latest-tech F every 6-12mos w/likely $0 in deprec costs....so out-of-warranty stuff is highly irrelevant.....

Would actually cut 599/430 more slack re: reliability than any 997TT/65 .....after all, F's sticker price is deceptively greater, but ultimately F is much cheaper than P/MB when one considers deprec cost...997TT/65 each cost $50K (or more) in deprec for 1 yr of use vs 599/430's rather reasonable $0 one-yr deprec cost ....and any F/P/MB can be leased $0 down and annually traded-in, thereby not tying up capital and minimizing sales txs paid, while enjoying annually-fresh copies of latest F/P/MB technologies

The problem with this comparison of depreciation costs is that the average Benz or 911 is driven significantly more miles than the average F car. You can make a safe bet that an F car with avg of 10K to 15K miles per year would not be holding its value as well as the typical garage queen F car.

Yes, it did but, as far as I know his F430 did not need new gearbox.

...just a new clutch and the usual "software update"

My telediagnosis: your battery is flat.

Do you mean that typical "tack-tack-tack-tack-tack" sound, so common at Ferrari that haven't been driven for, let's say a week or so?

    Hehe, yes.

But I've also experienced the "sputters, coughs and gasps" reported by Nick. And then my engine died before it really had the chance to live.

The next try was "tack-tack-tack" only.

my guess is a faulty mass airflo sensor...

BINGO! A faulty airflo sensor. Thankfully, the gear box tested ok. Get my car back tomorrow for weekend driving ecstasy.

    Re: Talk about being embarrassed

Glad to hear it was nothing major that was wrong.

What brand of air flow sensor was it? ..Bosch?
