I really think that this is the next generation Boxster.
The facelift already took place, there is nothing left for little facelifts.
The next facelift will be a generation change.
The constant rumor I hear from different sources indicates that ALL Porsche models will get engines based on the "old" 993 design. Means: all engines will be "GT3" derived.
Reason: Porsche needs the possibility to upgrade the engines for more power, more displacement and maintain more strict ecological laws worldwide in the future.
Another "sub"-rumor indicates that the 911 gets the "new" engine only and that the Boxster will use the "old" 996 engine because it is good for at least up to 350 HP.
The all new 996 and all new Boxster are already in development. Be sure that Porsche already took a preliminary decision on the technical specs. There might be a change here and there and some adaptations to laws and market situations but it is a fact that Weissach already knows what's coming next.
At least a few months before official introduction, we'll have details because information leaks start to grow bigger and we'll get the information we want to know.
Right now, probably only a few dozens of people know the details and trust me: anyone telling anything to the outside world would probably loose his job. At this point of development, it is very easy to trace back information leaks. So if someone (dealer, forum, newsgroups, magazines, etc.) tells you right now that he has details, he has NOT.

, when you say the new gen. 911 engine is based on the old 993 does it mean that they're going back to air-cooled engines again? or i'm missing something?

RC, that sounds great. I like the idea of putting a GT3 based engine into the Boxster
But won't such a engine make the 997/987 much more expensive than the 996/986?
To me, it doesn't make sense to use a GT3 based engine on the 997 and a M96 based engine on the 987, because development costs would be to high, if a GT3 based engine would only be used on the 997.
The Boxster in the picture has huge side air intakes. Maybe, this is a sign of a more powerful engine

Well, Porsche needs an engine to be capable of future upgrades, power-wise and environmental-wise.
Due to high 996 Turbo production and a possible high demand for the new GT3, the production cost of the "GT3" engine actually dropped substantially.
But I agree with you: Porsche might still use the M96 (the actual Boxster/996 engine) for the future Boxster because they don't need 500 HP on Porsche's little Roadster.

Well, I'd like to have 1000 HP on my Turbo but I highly doubt that Porsche will ever give that to me.
I'm pretty sure that the top version of the 987 (or whatever the code will be) hits the 300 HP mark.
Porsche has to keep up with power, otherwise they'll loose customers.
