time to change oil @ 2000kms?

when should i change oil for 997TT? 2000kms? or more?

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

I changed mine at 500 miles in my C4S. I was told that is the most important oil change in the life of the car.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

Many opinions on this theme. But, I'll do mine between 1500-2000 miles, then every 5k beyond that. If nothing else, it gives me a piece of mind.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

Am I missing something? As far as I can tell, the manual says every 20,000 miles; am I overlooking something or are you guys just being extra careful

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

during the break in period, wears often occur. so it may improve performance after doing an oil change during the first 2k to 3k

with respect, this is outmoded nonsense. follow the factory recomendations and save your money.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

I have to disagree with you on this. I believe that the first oil change should be done within 500 miles because of the metal shavings and other material that may be deposited in the oil from first breaking in the engine. On the 997 forum someone posted a link to a guys website who had a very unique method of breaking in the engine. He suggested that within the firs 20 miles on the car one should do 3rd or 4th gear pulls to about 5000rpm and then simply let off the throttle and let the engine compression slow the car back down. His theory was that this "seated" the piston rings gauranteeing no leakdown or oil/fuel contamination. He has done this to hundreds of cars and motorcycles (both race and street) and swares by this method. He also posted many pictures of pistons that underwent factory recommended break in vs. his method. The difference was astonishing. He highly recomended an early oil change for the reasons I already mentioned. Maybe someone could find that thread.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

I go with Trip's comment. To encourage this in Japan (lots of stingy Porsche Owners here) the 2000 mile / 3000 Km is free! So is the oil filter. I have always done it at 3000KM and then every 7500 - 8000. The manual is not country specific. High temperatures, lots of stop start traffic, humidity, dust all have a negative effect.

Also, an example of Porsche advice most couldn't follow in the day was the 993 manual - take your top car to top speed at least once each day - approximately 270 KMH. Not possible in most countries.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

Porsche changes the oil the first time at the facotry after they dyno the engine. THAT'S the first real change of oil. There is an excellent discussion on the whole oil change obsession elsewhere,--maybe on the Rennlist. With today's synthetics, the ideal change interval of the oil is between 5 and 8,000. But,--you should plan on a filter change in the middle somewhere.

    Trip,
Here's the website I think you're talking about.
    Break In Secrets
He's not the only engine builder who suggests this, either. You can find a few other sites that say essentially the same thing. While certainly no expert, years ago I rebuilt a few engines and it makes perfect sense to me.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

Hey thanks for the link. I am suprised that this advice is not given in the drivers manual.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

I'm surprised as well. I've been trying to reason why Porsche and other manufacturers give this advice instead of the correct way to break in. It occurred to me that everyone agrees the most common way for an engine to get damaged is to put it under a lot of force before it is fully warmed up. Doing a 'low stress' break in does comparatively less damage. So the engineers probably said "If we tell people to work the motor hard during break in, 50% will ignore the warmup and really screw up the motor. If we tell people to take it easy, most will just have a weak motor that burns oil, but at least it will still run."

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

In the past, with all my cars, I just follow the owner's manual and have had no problems with the cars.

Re: time to change oil @ 2000kms?

I just changed the oil on my 997tt @ 900 miles.
