2004 911 Anniv Edition vs 2005 911 base Carrera- opinions?

What do you guys think about a fully loaded 2004 911 Anniversary Edition with about 5K miles, in great shape (about $60K) vs a 2005 loaded Carrera (non-S) for 8K more? Have you guys/gals driven the 2004 40th Anniv edition 911? How about just comparing the driving dynamics themselves (without considering price)? Which would you go for? Or would you get a new Cayman S? I need help!

Re: 2004 911 Anniv Edition vs 2005 911 base Carrera- opinion

I went through a similar process as you are and even did the same thing as ask if I should get a Cayman S or a 997 (non S) on a 997 forum. LOL

Check out this thread http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=185422&page=&fpart=1&vc=1 and have a laugh as you watch what slowly happens to me over a couple of weeks.

Drive them and see which one you like the best. I like the look and feel of the 997 but that is just me. Since you are going to be the one driving it, whichever feels good to you, go for it. Believe me at the end of the day you will not go wrong with any of these. You might wonder what if but that is normal.

The anniversary edition (or other commemorative or special editions) is Porsche's last-ditch marketing attempt to sell product by adding special frills at the end of a model's life. IOW, something to sell while most buyers (typically more serious car guys) are waiting on the sidelines for the new model to be introduced.

The reviews of the 997 say it is a big-time improvement over the 996.

    Get the 997.

Re: 2004 911 Anniv Edition vs 2005 911 base Carrera- opinion

I was impressed with the top end performance (X51) of the anniversary edition I drove a couple of years ago; addictive. The 997, by comparison, has the standard motor.

On the other hand, the 997 has the new interior with the better materials, much, much better seats, new styling, etc.

So, if HP is your primary concern, go for the 40th anniversary. Otherwise, the 997.

The hp of the 40th ed car is 345.

    Normal 996 is 320hp.

Thanks for the replies! I will be test driving both tomorrow and will let you know how it goes. Wife also gave the green light to order a new 07 997S (sparsely optioned), so that is a consideration as well-

Go for the 997S. I am in same stituation, altough only for green light for the 997 base, so now looking at low milage S :-)
996s are good cars, but get the newest Porsche your money can buy. good luck :-)

I dunno how you'll tell any differences on public roads. really need a track (or live with the car a while) to find out for sure.

My advice is hard to implement but here goes: try to get the cars out on the test drive by yourself. Or, if the sales guy comes with you tell him to shut up if you can some how do this politely. If not during the test drive, then try to "bond" with both cars ALL BY YOURSELF in the lot or showroom. Too much information, too many subtle cues and "communication" going on between you and the car; having somebody talking while you're trying to do this is a big PITA!

Keep in mind it is probably okay to disregard speedlimits and traffic laws during the test drive. I should have lost my license a few times doing this but somehow I could tell the cops didn't want to spoil my fun and just left me alone (and even got out of my way) knowing I was trying to decide something verrrry important.

    Have FUN!

I'd get the 997S for sure, but if the choice was base 997 vs 996 40th, I'd take the 996.

The 40th edition 996 was the sportiest normally aspirated 911 except for the GT3. It was light, fast, had sport suspension, and a LSD. TO me, that's a much sportier set up than the base 997. There is a theoretical consideration that a special edition 911 with LSD might hold value better over the years (though 996's have suffered in this regard).

I would get the Cayman S or 997. I think the 997 looks better than the 996.

I owned a 40th anniv... bought it with 6,000 kms on it, simply cause I couldn't wait for a standard 997... we're talking back when the first batch of 997 production cars were being delivered... the 40th is a very luxuries car... full, natural leather... heated seats... semi-polished wheels... you name it, and the car has it... one problem at the time for me: stiff ride... but today, with the 997 almost 2 years into production, the 996 (anniv. or not), looks just plain old outdated... both cars have the same performance... the 997 has a wider and more aggressive rear, while the 996 40th front is far better looking, and much more aggressive... go for the 997 with no hesitation... and forget the cayman S if you can afford the standard 997... traded my 40th for a 987S just for summer time, ordered a Cayman S, and ditched it last minute for a pre-ordered 997S Cab... go for the 997 and post the pics. once you take delivery :-)
