    gas cap placement

Does anyone know the reasoning behind what side the gas cap is on? Seems to have changed over the years.

Well...I know the answer to the question is yes but could someone who does know explain it? Thanks.

    Re: gas cap placement

As long as I can remember , all German cars have had the gas cap on the passenger side .
( Lately I have seen them there on some American cars as well )

I think it's a good idea . If nothing else , it makes it easier to get out of the car when pulling up close next to the gas pump.

    Makes sense to me..

    Re: gas cap placement

    but...

    Re: gas cap placement

The gas cap is on the right so that if you run out of gas you're refilling (from a jerry can) standing in the shoulder of the road, not in traffic. Its a safety thing. This is why Japanese cars often have the gas on the left side. (I won't even go into the randomness of American cars...)

    Re: gas cap placement

petrol cap is on the right hand side for 997 (which is the driver side for me).

Sorry for not being clear. The fuel filler door should be on the passenger side for safety when refilling when stranded. For Japanese and English cars (at least in pre-Ford, BMW or VW-owned days), this was on the left. For everybody else, the right. While the dashboard can be easily reversed, the fuel tank and body panels cannot. There are of course exceptions in current design, but this was the original intent.

Well, when you guys start driving on the "right" side of the road like everybody else..... Lol
Btw: why DO you drive on the left ?

I'm sure you're not serious but I used to live in London and have to stick up for 'em so here goes...

This has to do with being able to get at your sword in medieval times when you never knew a stranger's intentions. When we colonists got rid of King George we also got rid of some of his traditions. (Including racing horses the other way round the track.) Napolean changed sides for the majority of the continent. Sweden stayed left until '69 or so--I have no idea what happened at land borders!

Depending on your tolerance this can be interesting or incredibly boring but I'll stop here (though I could also explain how U.S. train gauges trace back to the Roman Empire).

If I go far enough off topic do I get back on?

    Re: gas cap placement

    Thanks for the explanation .
I guess you have to be British to stick with old traditions
and make 90% of the population which are right handed shift with their left . Lol

I'm sure that a pure mathematician could cite formulae proving that you do, but i would hope that he would do it on the Off Topic forum, so that I would not have to read it and try to understand it.

Because if I drive on the right I have a lot of accidents.

    Re: gas cap placement

The best thing for me is that for some reason in the UK most petrol stations have the pumps set out too close together and don't stagger them. So invariably you get two cars side by side leaving you (RHS filler cap) to use the RHS pump and the other driver to use the LHS pump. What you get here is a few moments of nervous twitching as the other driver gets precariously out of his car holding onto his drivers door. You just know it could all go pear shaped very easily.

However, this is where it's cool owning/driving a 997. As the filler cap is at the front of the car this ensures that the other vehicle parks further forward than you, therefore creating a staggering effect naturally. So, the other driver can get out of his car with completely free egress and access. Excellent. No more heart pumping moments.
