    Flapping sound in crosswinds?

When driving 70mph in strong cross winds from the driver's side only, has anyone heard a flapping sound coming from under the car between the front/back seats and between the driver's/passenger side seats.

It does not sound metallic, more like a leather glove or rag beating the underside of the carriage!

I have brought into a P dealer and they put a screw into something they thought might be a problem. Of course it did not resolve the problem.

    Anyone have this come up???

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

Since the bottom of the car is covered in large plastic panels it is possible one of them is vibrating like a drum skin because the center of it is unattached. Perhaps they all look fine from the outside but are actually not connected at their (hidden) connection points.

Putting in a single screw ,to see what happens, assumes the existing fastenings are all okay.

Just a guess on my part. Large panels will flap/oscillate/resonate (generate intermitant lift) if not properly fastened.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

MMD, you are right on. This is what P dealer did, put one single screw in the middle where they connect. Didn't work. I assume it is somewhere with the plastic housing. I sure wish I had a lift in my garage now!

Find a Porsche specialty repair/mod shop in your vicinity (in CA should be easy). Maybe they can figure it out and will charge you nominal fee for putting it on a lift. If they see cars that are on the track all the time (at 100+mph) maybe they have a pretty good idea what it is.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

I have the exact same problem and I just gave up

    Trouser bottoms

I find they tend to flap a bit at high speed. My cure is to wear bicycle clips when I'm driving fast. Sort of PSE in reverse if you know what I mean. It means you don't get distracted by the flapping sounds.

Oxonian, you are in Saudi Arabia where it's pretty hot. Tkids, you don't write what part of California you live, but it may also be pretty warm there right now.

The plastic underbody panels would expand a lot more than the steel unibody they are attached to at high ambient temperatures. Get your dealers to remove all those underbody panels and then refit them again, ensuring that they are flat, not "bowed", when they are tightened up.

I suspect that the diagnosis mentioned above was right, but that putting a screw into a loose bowed section of expanded panel just wasn't the right treatment.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

Thanks Fritz. That makes sense. I did not have this problem when driving the car in Germany when it was colder, but when driving recently across the USA at 95+ degrees I had this problem. I am also thinking that during the pre-delivery inspection at the usa dealership might of messed up the plastic panels.

    Thanks!

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

    You're welcome.

I'd be interested to know if the fix works, even tho I don't have the problem, and the weather has turned cooler here now anyway.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

    Thanks Fritz...

Some of the people here are real experts. They can accurately diagnose a problem without looking at a car. Astonishing

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

Maybe try another dealer for the fix. I've noticed that they start to get lazy if a car is brought back for the same thing repeatedly. "What? We can't hear anything and we had every tech drive the car for a half hour each."

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

Mine does it when there is a significant crosswind and the speed is over 70MPH. I'm not sure that the temp makes much of a difference in my case. I just ignore it now. Will have it checked whenever I need service in the future.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

Mine does the same also, Strong Cross-winds only. Has happened so far in the south of France and Nort Spain where is not that hot.

    Any help greatly welcome

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

I've noticed a similar effect several times on my car. I've noticed it both driving in Europe and the states (altough I haven't noticed the crosswind factor). I didn't post about it before or take it to a dealer because I find it pretty hard to describe...it sounds like a deep sounding flapping of something. It hasn't been too annoying, but if I keep hearing it regularly I'll take it in.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

    Hi!
I noticed the same problem on the highway a couple of weeks ago on my holiday in Germany. The next day the car was already taken in the nearest workshop.
Unfortunately I didn't realize at that time that the problem could be somehow related to the crosswind, in fact present when I first heard this noise, so I missed to mention it to the workshop guy that took the car for a drive.
As usually happens, he didn't find anything abnormal even though the car was launched up to 240 Km/h, very likely because of the absence of crosswind during the drive.
Tomorrow I will take it to the workshop again, hopefully I 'll get it sorted out.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

For some strange reason, I had a feeling that I would not be the only person with this problem. I will be trying again at another dealership on Monday the 7th, but of course I will not know if it is really fixed until I find strong crosswinds and going over 70mph!

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

I've had it too, though mine was more of a metallic sound - like a metal Rubik's cube bouncing around in the ctr console storage bin. I only noticed it on the hwy during a long trip on a hot day - haven't had it recur for 2 months now. I brought it in to the dealer, but of course, they could not reproduce it. I would love to hear more if anyone gets to the bottom of it.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

You'd think that P would know what it is. Tests in the wind tunnel would simulate this very easily. Maybe they don't want another TSB on their hands for only a few complaints? It does seem like given the right conditions it will happen in most 997's.

Don't go giving me credit for pure guesswork which might yet prove to be completely wrong.
Also, it was MMD who pointed us in the direction of the plastic underbody panels.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

i know this sounds stupid but could it somehow be related to turbulance thru and around the mirror cutout. my 3m film guy mentioned something about this problem.

    Re: Flapping sound in crosswinds?

Went to another dealership today regarding the flapping. They had another car with the same problem and Porsche directed them to use Velcro where the plastic molding overlaps. They said there is even a Porsche part number for the velcro! Now I must find some strong crosswinds to check out the new fix.
