18" 997 Carrera wheels will be fine (987 Boxster S or Cayman S wheels work too).
18" 996 wheels require higher-profile tires than spec to match the wheel diameter of the 997.
Why is that? I thought 18 inches was 18 inches?
Care to enlighten me?

Sure. The wheels are not the problem, tires are. 996 wheels will indeed work, but I'd advise against using stock 996 tires, as the overall wheel diameter (including the tire's side wall) is 1 inch larger in the 997 than in the 996. Electronics, sensors, speedometer, you name it, depend on keeping the diameter up to specs to work properly.
So yes, 996 TT rims will work, but you're going to need different tires:
997 Carrera:
front: 235/45 ZR 18 = 66.9 cm
rear: 275/40 ZR 18 = 67.8 cm
996 Turbo:
front: 225/40 ZR 18 = 63.7 cm
rear: 295/30 ZR 18 = 63.4 cm
You'd need 225/47 ZR18 in the front and 295/27.5 ZR18 in the rear for this to work properly - which isn't going to happen !
Since I guess Jeannot is going for brand-new wheels and tires, it's easiest to buy a factory-spec rim+tire set directly from his dealer. IIRC Gnil had 997 C4 wheels his C4S last winter, with 18" Nokian snow tires, and was pretty happy with them.
By the way, Mithras, I wouldn't recommend 17" rims (if you have an S and/or PCCB). The discs are about 14" alone, throw in calipers and you're dangerously close to the metal.

Thanks, but I'm still a bit confused - unless the section has an influence on the rolling diameter?
