    997S winter tires

    Another 997 question :-)
Can 18" fit the 997S (for winter tires), or do the winter tires have to be the same dimensions as summers?
    Any recommendation?
    Thanks !

    Re: 997S winter tires

18 is fine and approved by Porsche.
Even for the Turbo without PCCB

    Re: 997S winter tires

I have 18" Conti's mounted on turbo wheels. Looks and rides great.

    Re: 997S winter tires

Are the 997TT wheels available in 18 inch? I thought they were all 19.

    Re: 997S winter tires

Think he's referring to 996TT wheels.

    here

    Re: 997S winter tires

18" 997 Carrera wheels will be fine (987 Boxster S or Cayman S wheels work too).
18" 996 wheels require higher-profile tires than spec to match the wheel diameter of the 997.

Same spec on C2/S as C4/S?

I'm curious to know if the recommendation for winter wheels and tires is the same for all models regardless of rwd or awd. Anyone know?

Why is that? I thought 18 inches was 18 inches?
    Care to enlighten me?

    Re: 997S winter tires

You are correct! I was referring to the wheels only!

    Re: 997S winter tires

Nokian RSI in 225/40/18 FR and 245/40/18 R would probably be the best set of winter tires you can put on a 997.

Of course if you want to climb ice walls with your 997 and can get away with 17' wheels, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta "Hakka 2" in 225/45/17 is the same tire that was banned by many rallying sancioning bodies years ago when it came out as an "unfair advantage".

Sure. The wheels are not the problem, tires are. 996 wheels will indeed work, but I'd advise against using stock 996 tires, as the overall wheel diameter (including the tire's side wall) is 1 inch larger in the 997 than in the 996. Electronics, sensors, speedometer, you name it, depend on keeping the diameter up to specs to work properly.

So yes, 996 TT rims will work, but you're going to need different tires:
    997 Carrera:
    front: 235/45 ZR 18 = 66.9 cm
    rear: 275/40 ZR 18 = 67.8 cm

    996 Turbo:
    front: 225/40 ZR 18 = 63.7 cm
    rear: 295/30 ZR 18 = 63.4 cm

You'd need 225/47 ZR18 in the front and 295/27.5 ZR18 in the rear for this to work properly - which isn't going to happen !

Since I guess Jeannot is going for brand-new wheels and tires, it's easiest to buy a factory-spec rim+tire set directly from his dealer. IIRC Gnil had 997 C4 wheels his C4S last winter, with 18" Nokian snow tires, and was pretty happy with them.

By the way, Mithras, I wouldn't recommend 17" rims (if you have an S and/or PCCB). The discs are about 14" alone, throw in calipers and you're dangerously close to the metal.

    Re: 997S winter tires

Thanks, but I'm still a bit confused - unless the section has an influence on the rolling diameter?

    Re: 997S winter tires

I have on My 997 Carrer4 18" winter tire from Nokian, same dimension as the summer tires (offically approved by Porsche Front 235/40/18 rear 295/35/18). Take care you order the well in advance could take some time to get them

    Re: 997S winter tires

Ok, thanks for the answer, the main point is: I can have the regular 19" set for summer and buy a set of 18" for winters. I just was not sure 18" would fit at all given the larger brakes on the S model. Cheers !

I haven't measured so I don't know if a 17 inch wheel would clear the rotors on PCCBs. I know that it will clear on stock brakes as a friend of mine is running stock brake disks/rotors in Grand-Am Cup and was mandated to use 17' wheels.

If they clear, they clear, you don't need them to clear by anything other than a few mm's. The best thing about smaller diameter wheels is you can have a higher sidewall which is much better in the snow.

Remember, high & narrow is what you want in a winter tire. The same about of rubber is on the road but the footprint is much more condusive to forward traction (vs. a wide tire which is better for lateral traction)

If I'm not mistaken, "235/45 ZR 18" means:
    - width: 235 mm,
    - sidewall: 45% of 235 mm (i.e. 106 mm),
    - rim diameter: 18" (i.e. 457 mm)
    - ZR: radial tire, max speed > 240 kph

    Rolling diameter: (18 * 25,4) + 2 * (45% * 235) = 669 mm

Thanks Mithras, I didn't know 17" wheels actually fitted. Does your friend have a regular Carrera or an S (the S has bigger discs)?

    Re: 997S winter tires

I always though profile (or sidewall) was a measurement in mm.

    But you're correct - thanks.

It's not just a saying - you really DO learn something new every day!

    That's what I have
