Due to Audis relation with Lamborghini this car will be slower than the Gallardo. It won't pack more than 500hp, beacsue if it would, then it would inflict with Gallardo sales. A spoke to an Audi dealer and he said that the R8 will be priced at around 90k. 911TT owner can sleep tight, this car won't be any competition at all.
Jaguar and Aston Martin don't have a problem doing this, so I would think that there should not be a problem with Audi and Lambo.
You are wrong. Jag and AM do have problems. Just look at the new Jaguar XKR, it has 420hp. That is a quite some power but not enough for the car to be faster than its 450hp powered sybling called the DB9.
The Gallardo 2006 has 520hp which is perfect to keep itself distant from the R8 which is romoured to have 480(top of the line version).
The last 12 months Lamborghini has been a profitable company and there is no way VAG will ruin that by launching a Gallardo killer from Audi.
The point that I was trying to make is that they are selling the new Jag, DB9 and Vantage. These cars look close and they keep selling them. The R8 does not look like the Lambo and will not cut into their sales. You are too concentrated on HP and not the demographics of the buyers. I am on the list to buy the R8 because I can afford it. If price were no object I would buy the Lambo because I like the looks better. If only HP counted then I would be buying a Corvette for the money.
The XK, DB9 and Vantage do look a like but they don't clash. The DB9 is a 2+2 GT with a 100k+ price tag. The Jag XK is also a 2+2 coupe but has a price tag under 100k and has less power than the DB9. The Vantage is priced between them and has a different chracter, it is more agile, sportier and smaller.
The 911 and the Cayman also look alike but just like the DB9 and the jag there is a power difference between them in order for the cheaper one not to inflict into the sales of the more expensive one.
Unlike the multi company concerns in the US Bentley, Audi and Lamborghini are profitable companies, and this is all thanks to a clever board. The Gallardo is a big seller and if there is a cheaper and faster Audi most people might not end up buying the Lambo. The R8 has the looks of a spaceship and is a pretty serious car, Audi has invested huge amounts of money into the project. Just like the Audi TT is will use light weight materials and have a DSG tranny. With the right power the car can turn out to be a monster.
