Break pads wearing very quickly on track

I have a 996 Carrera with Powerkit (X51) and sport suspension (X74) that I use both on the street and for track days. On the racetrack I use Michelin Cup-tyres.

My problem is that I get a very short life out of the brake pads, about 3 track days. Might this have something to do with my braking style? I have tried both the standard brake pads and Porsche's 'sport' brake pads. I didn't get any better life out of the 'sport' brake pads, but they were noisy when driving in town. The problem with other brake pads (Pagid) is that they are even more noisy when cold.

Can I change my braking style to reduce the wear on the brake pads?

    Thanks in advance,

    fantasma

    Yes.

Re: Break pads wearing very quickly on track

    Fantasma,
I have no porsche, so take my advice with a grain of salt
When the PCCB's were first introduced, there were some problems with track use. I thought they lasted way too short for such expesnive products or so. Some people complained with porsche, and response was (initially) that most people don't understand how to brake during track events. They braked too early, brtaking too soft, and thus heating the brakes too much, which caused exessive wear. I exrapolated that to the idea that it is better for some brakes to brake very hard for a short time, than to brake a little bit for a long time... anybody can clarify this, or tell me I'm right/wrong?

    Correct, Joost.

    Maverick,
could you give me a hint?

Braking rather late and hard is indeed the way to go. Other than that, Porsche sport pads are no real track pads. Especially if you run your car on Michelin Sports CUP which are known for extreme braking grip, Pagid Blue is what you should use and they will last much more than 3 track-days. For track-days I use them on my 996 TT on the front discs. The braking power is amazing. Yes they squeek terribly which is why I replace them by the street pads when I also change the wheels (from Corsa equipped to Asimetrico's). I do this myself which may be a burden sometimes because it takes 3 - 4 hours work. On the other hand it's nice to work on the car (it's about the only thing you can do on these modern Porsches) and allows you to check the state of your suspension and braking system (and also clean the perforations in the discs).

    Sure, fantasma.

Your current style is equal to about 3 days of pad life.
Since you are not currently happy with 3 days, you need to experiment with two or more styles.

    a) Brake earlier and longer and ascertain how many of days you get.

    b) Brake later and shorter and ascertain how many days?

After you experiment, report back to us with the results and we can discuss it further.

If you are unhappy with the results from a) and b), I recommend you upgrade to a set of endurance race track pads. Since you make the effort to switch to track-designed Cup tyres, you might consider also making the effort to switch to track-designed endurance pads.

For the street, you simply switch back to street tyres and pads just like Phil_996.

Re: Break pads wearing very quickly on track

Go with Pagid yellow RS-19. They are used for endurance racing and will last longer, albeit at the expense of your rotors. I get about 5+ track days on a set of BHP performance pads on my 996 before they are down to less than 40% and i won't pass tech inspection. Less if the track days are on braking intensive tracks like Watkins Glen.

Re: Break pads wearing very quickly on track

just use pagid rs19 yellow front pagid rs 29 black in rear you will never go back to a sport pad

Re: Break pads wearing very quickly on track

    Frank Tan and 930man,

thanks for your help. How much noise (squealing) do you get from the Pagid yellow (RS19) when driving on the street?

    Thanks in advance,

Re: Break pads wearing very quickly on track

If you haven't yes, try the method of degressive braking, i.e. jump on the brake at the braking point and gradually lift off your foot. It's the most efficient way of braking and also the best for your pads.
I have PCCB 2nd generation so their lifetime is different to yours, but I'm on 7 track days and still the original, no problem.

Also, you wrote that you use Michelin Cup tyres for track days, I don't recommend it since the 996 (as the 997) doesn't have a dry sump lubrication system and you can starve your engine in high speed corners resulting in engine brake.

    Check it out.
    Good luck.

Re: Break pads wearing very quickly on track

    Fanch,

    thanks for your tips.

Regarding the cup tyres, this apparently is not an issue on cars equipped with Powerkit (X51) since they have a modified oil-pickup.

    Very interesting news!!!
Did you hear that from your dealer?
I have also X51 but on a 997, but I presume it would be similar.
This would definitely increase grip on track.
    Thanks for checking.

    Fanch,
the 996 X51 can run on r-rated tyres. I have read that on several forums and I had it confirmed by a Porsche Center. See this thread.
Regarding the 997 X51 and r-rated tyres, I have no information...

Re: Break pads wearing very quickly on track

my rs19s SQUEEEEAAAALL on the street. just change back to the street pads when you gone back home from the track event. takes me 10 minutes per wheel to change out the pads.
