That's the E46 M3, *BEFORE* BMW went ugly.

It's also the only roomier alternative to the Carrera.

Best of both worlds in that driveway

    Re: New 997S owner

    Thanks for the compliments, everyone.

The M3 is Titanium Silver but I can see how it looks whitish. If you're referring to the beater across the street then yeah, it's a sorespot on the block. It's only there in the summer when the kid is home from school.

I'll do a short writeup once I'm out of the break-in period. Already I can tell that the M3 feels like a cadillac when you get into it right after riding in the 997. The Porsche makes you feel every bump! One other huge difference is the Porsche is easier to drive slowly. Up to 4000 rpm there's just not a lot of pull and I naturally find myself going the speedlimit. But in the M3, it is very very easy to find yourself doing 70 in a 45 because of the flatter torque band. Starting 2k RPM the M3 gets going, but you don't feel that kind of pull in the Porsche until 3500rpm right before you have to shift for the break-in rpm's.

Lastly, I can feel the correct speed in the Porsche. 75 feels like 75. In the M3, 90 feels like 70.

    Re: New 997S owner

    Congratulations! Gorgeous baby!

Great car! I agree with you on how "easy" to drive the 911 is... under 4000rpm when I'm around town or in quiet surburbia driving like a Granny, it's kid's play. I'm almost through break in so I haven't felt the "pull" above 5000rpm's , but it's so much easier to drive compared to my WRX where nothing happens below 4000rpms and then it goes ballistic after 5000rpms Enjoy your new "baby"

    Re: New 997S owner

    You're taking it up to 5000 rpm's?

My salesman (what do they know?) said 4000 for first 1000 miles then 5500 ish for the next 500 then I should be done. Where do they come up with this?

Manual says 4200rpm for 2000 miles

    Re: New 997S owner

Congrats....Looks like you finally decided on a car....

I've done 2500k's so far , and the odd times I've pushed it to 5000-5500rpm's have been accidental, it's too easy to do There's nothing in the manual about the no. of miles for break-in, so I'm just following what I've read so far in this forum. It's the torque on the S and it's versatility I'm impressed with, compared to my old 2.7L boxster, my modded Rex and even my wife's old V8 Holden(GM).

    Re: New 997S owner

Dude!, this saturday I picked up a brand new 997 C4S with the same atlas grey on grey but with a blue top. Unbelievable combo IMO. Same issue with breakin period here. Been told 4000rpm for 2000 miles. I drive it only on weekends, so I may spend 6 months in breakin... I dont think I am lasting that long...Dealer said ok to go over once in a while as long as it is not sustained... Almost all of the same options as the car above but with heated seats. Funny thing is I have a BMW 545i sitting next to it too. I am so psyched about the purchase. Pure impulse buying with instant gratification as I test drove on friday and took it home saturday afternoon. I keep checking the garage to make sure the baby is still there!!!

    Re: New 997S owner

    Sweettttttttt.......

    Re: New 997S owner

Pablo, I feel your pain! If it's a weekend car then you just have to go on a nice road trip on a Saturday and log 400 miles or so on one day. That's what I plan to do next week once the clear bra is installed.

    Re: New 997S owner

Great idea Yemen except the 3 and 7 year olds may cramp up in that back seat for 6-7 hours!!! Can you say babysitter???
