    Today I got a puncture....

    ...and you realise how hopeless the puncture repair kit is. I tried filling the tyre with the gel despite knowing that it would ruin my tyre even if the tyre was suitable for repair. I followed the instructions but the tyre did not inflate at all. Hopeless.

    I then had to crawl 3 miles back to my house through busy London traffic - absolute nightmare as people are SO impatient despite it being obvious I had a problem.

    Will I have done any harm to my car doing this? I accept that the tyre (which was fairly new ) is finished but I just hope I haven't done any damage to the car.

    I am not keen to drive it to my local tyre depot so does this warrant calling out the Porsche recovery service? Has anyone used this - I presume it's just the RAC here in the UK - and will they just take me to a tyre depot?

    Any help much appreciated.

    I refused to use the factory repair kit - no confidence it would work and knew it would ruin the tyre. I was lucky in that i was able to reinflate and drive for a few miles with a very slow puncture to my trusted tyre depot for a repair.

    You could call Emergancy Service, but the RAC will only be able to get you to an OPC (tomorrow morning) on a flat back; at which point you are pretty well forced to buy the replacment tyre from them.

    You might find that only the OPC can supply a tyre at short notice anyway,in which case use the service you are paying for.

    Ed I am soooo feeling for you. I had a nail in my tire, when I realized, it was flat. I stopped filled it with air and drove directly to the tire place. By then I almost lost the whole tire by driving it previously when it was flat, it was the rear. LoooL I didnt know there was a gel puncture repair kit.. What the heck was I gonna do? Tow it, leave it? I learned the RIM and tire can be destroyed in a mere 10 seconds. I lucked out with the tire. I would call Porsche recovery though.

    Sorry to hear that. Yep people can be really impatient, makes you doubt humanity in situations like this. Remember years ago when I had an Esprit helping a guy push his broken down F355 out of a busy main road in central London to a side street. Everyone going by was giving him so much sh*t and he was so grateful that I stopped to give a hand.

    As above, suspect they will just take you to OPC. Only other place you might want to try is Pirelli Performance centre (assuming you have PZero's?). Tehy're tyre specialists which have been vetted / tested by Pirelli for dealing with high performance cars:

    Thanks for the replies. I've phoned my OPC who said that the recovery service will take my car to the nearest tyre depot if I require. It's a real shag though - my car is basically beached outside my house until the weekend.

    Bite the money/weight/space bullet and get the darn spare. OR a jack and wrench and DIY plug kit (I don't want to use the goop either though my Porsche servuce guy claims won't make the tire unrepairable).

    I've never bothered with the temporary repair paste as its messy and fidly.

    As an aside, I was shocked to find how dispropotionate the tyre wear was on the insides of my rears.

    I had them replaced the other weekend. I found a place within the M25 that replaced both my rears for about Pounds200 all inclusive of fitting and VAT. This is not a typo. They were 6mm tread part used as opposed to 8mm for Michelin PS2, but seeing how I've gone for brand new tyres before, only to get another puncture soon after, I thought I'd give this a go.

    This place has a lot of stock, but I went for Michelin PS2 N1 Porsche 295 30s again.

    PM me if you want details. Just for the record, I have no affiliation and this is not a sales pitch. Just trying to be helpful.

    Blimey - how are you supposed to tell what the wear is like on the inside of the tyre - I usually just feel the markers on the outside of the tyre rather than putting my hand all the way in...

    Thanks for the tip on the used tyres, although I've always been warned off second hand tyres...

    I'm not sure about this but if you're wear is disproportionate shouldn't you have your alignment checked? Is the wear on the other tires also disproportionate?

    If you go for a spare it must be one of the space saver deflatable units, which haven't been fitted to new cars since the 968 (??). Buying such a wheel off ebay can be a bit risky - some of these wheels could be from 944s or 928s and be at least 12 years old. You also need to allow for clearance over the brake calipers once its bolted on (i don't know this would be an issue, but the 928 units could only be fitted to the front axle , so a rear puncture resulted in swapping the front to the rear and the spare to the front - just as bad as using foam )

    Well we know the car is limited on trunk space, but I feel it should be against the law not to have a spare. The designers of the car should of came up with a way..
    Ok, dont laugh, but still, if your wheels die for whatever reason, your screwed basically.

    A rock flies through my front vent and punctures a/c condesor...

    Heres what Porsche suggested:
    Buy front vents, and this will decrease your chances of another rock.... then same breath, well you will have less airflow and maybe less performance...

    Come on Porsche, your smart enough and you charge enough for the car... PLEASE... get it right..
    Now I got to buy a spare tire....Geez

    I only want to concentrate on mods.........

    A punctured rear wheel will fit in the back seat if you push the front seat forward. Make sure you wrap them in loads of plastic bags though as they will be very dirty.

    I had to do it once.

    That tire looks like it spent its life without the right inflation pressure. How else can you explain the side wear and the center underworn? That puppy was ready to bye bye anyway, with multiple cords showing!

    Under inflation or more likely a serious geometry issue - the outer edge looks pretty unscathed so i'd get the geometry checked too. There is another thread on the 997 board about inner edge wear - i have a feeling Porsche set them up with a bit more camber to enhance hard cornering stability.

    You might want to think about resetting your geometry to the other end of the Porsche specification.

    MMD,--I flat ran out of time to price check that set up at the factory but have been told that there MAY be an issue with that setup fitting on the PCCB equipped cars. Any insight? Maybe some evening I can get you to measure your inside diameter with some calipers. I'm of the impression that the PCCBs may be too big to fit that 996 spare.

    Fits both black calipers and red calipers (front and back) on the 997.

    Don't know about the PCCB, I

    I guess there is a good chance it will fit because the rim of the spare MIGHT be the same ID as the 19 inch wheel.

    Good question though... . If I were near the car I'd run out and give it a quick measure... . If you didn't have "official" confirmation from Porsche, you'd really need to try it on your actual wheel though... . I was told if it clears the calipers it's fine, even by a tiny 2-3 mm, you're only going 50-60 mph on the spare anyway.

    I just measured the ID of the spare wheel (rim). It is 16 3/4 inches. measured the ID of my 19" wheel, it is 17 1/4 inches.

    Unfortunately I did not do this with large calipers. Just did it with metal measuring tape and VERY CARFULLY eyeballed it. The 16 3/4 is probably more accurate than the 17 1/4 because I had better access to the unmounted spare.

    Clearance between my red caliper and ID of front 19 wheel is one and a half inches (1 1/2). This means the clearance betwen the caliper and the spare wheel will be 1 and 1/4 inch.
    So if your PCCBS clear your 19 inch wheel by 1/2 inch or more chances are good that spare tire wheel will clear them... .

    Still only one way to know for sure since my measurments are good but not exact... .

    I have seen your pictures on the mounting bolt for the spare.Did you screw the mount into the "wall" and back that up with a piece of wood? Or? Thanks Gabe

    It is a piece of steel with a nut welded to it then riveted to the body under the carpeting. An 8mm threaded rod is screwed into the nut on the weldment and a wing nut with a backing block is used to secure spare.

    Yes, been there done that with my 986s spare, it WILL fit a 997S with red calipers (and of course 997). PROBLEM: it won't fit in trunk unless slanted radically, thus taking up all the room up there. Space for extra stuff is why the, well-fitting, collapsible spare is desired.

    Oh, BTW, my 986S is an 03 you should make sure spares are interchangeable with your 99.

    Thanks for the information. I went today and ordered from my local dealer option 447 (that's the number they told me for the kit in the USA) and hope that this puts me at ease. I take my 997S on long journeys often and flat tyres can, and do happen. I don't want to tow my car for a flat tyre and amuse the tower and have him comment on how can it be that one pays $100k for a car and need to tow it for a flat. I understand many owners might not care about a spare tyre but I do drive my car far from home and almost every day and having to tow my car and wait around is not an option for me. Thanks to the fellow who provided the part numbers.

    This is the response I received from my dealer re the 996 collapsable spare option for the 997:

    "Even though the 996 space saver might physically fit it is doubtful that it would be safe.

    The 996 had a maximum wheel size of 18", whereas the 997 C2 S has 19" wheels as standard. The overall diameters and the rolling radius of the wheel/tyre assemblies are different on a 996 than a 997, which might make the car unstable and cause problems with the cars electronic systems.

    We would not therefore be able to confirm that it is safe to do this and should you choose to do so it would be entirely at your own risk, both to your safety and to the reliability of the car.

    However, in some markets Porsche are still required to provide a space saver spare and it should be possible for us to obtain the parts for a 997 C2 S if desired.

    An initial investigation indicates that the parts required are as follows:

    Emergency Wheel @ Pounds432.84 + vat
    Boot For Emergency Wheel @ Pounds196.00 + vat
    Scissors Type Jack @ Pounds81.34 + vat
    Foam Part @ Pounds21.03 + vat
    Threaded Bolt for Assembly Wheel @ Pounds3.79 + vat"



    This fits on top of one of the rear seats - I've seen a picture somewhere - looks like a large black bag sitting on a polystyrene foam moulding restrained by the seat belt.
