    Cayenne All Season Tires

Now that I've passed the one-year mark and my Cay is no longer "new," it's time for a little off-road fun - as soon as I can decide on some decent 19" tires. I've given up on any N-rated prospects, so I guess I'll have to buy a new set of wheels, including a spare to clog up the cargo bay, with the best non-N 19" mud/snow/street tires I can find, and switch back and forth. If anyone has any suggestions, good experiences, or bad experiences, please pass along.

I'm using the Continental Contact M&S (not Sport Contact) and have been very pleased, and it is N rated in the 18" size. It seems to be a very durable tire and I have used it in some extreme off-road excursions. It was only in the steepest of grades that I have wished I had a more aggressive tread pattern (and a locking rear differential ) for a little extra traction. Even on those steep grades the traction control is very effective if you can keep some momentum going. I've climbed grades that Jeep Wranglers struggled with. And, when you get back on the pavement, you have a relatively quiet highway tire that is rated for 150 mph. So, I'm happy with this tire. It's a compromise, but one I can live with.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I have to have 19"ers to fit over the PK brakes and Conti's website lists some Contacts in 19 that will be available in "summer 2006," but the load/speed rating is only 103H (the 255/15R18s are rated at 109V). However, it also doesn't list this tire as M&S rated, so maybe I'm looking at the wrong tire. It does list the ContiTrac SUV as M&S rated, but it only goes to 17". Am I missing something here? Sorry to all those who find this way off topic. If it goes on long, I'll start a new thread.

Yeah, your right, not much available in the 19" sizes. The full name is Continental 4X4 Contact. Looking on TireRack I only see a 255/50HR19 with a 103 rating and a 265/50HR19XL with a 110 rating. Nothing with a V speed rating.

Anyone else have any off-road experience in 19" tires?

    Re: Cayenne All Season Tires

GM, Thanks for starting the new thread. Am hoping there are some good suggestions out there. The irony of my lamenting the limited capabilities of most "SUVs" out there, while being, myself, limited by tire selection, is most painful.

    Re: Cayenne All Season Tires

I have seen some discussions elsewhere about Toyo's for the Cayenne. They may have something that would suit your needs and I have heard some others have had good success with them. I am not sure how 'off-roadable' they are but maybe worth a look at their site?

    Good luck with the search.

    Re: Cayenne All Season Tires

OK, yes, Toyo! Jeffrey Behr was using Toyo Proxes for awhile and I don't think he had any problems. I know he has driven off-road extensively on them and also had them to 150 mph. May be worth a look.

    Re: Cayenne All Season Tires

    Thanks, GM and Rowlands!
Have been seriously considering the Proxes. Several folks on various forums seem to think highly of them. It's funny that their 19"s aren't M&S rated, but that seems to be related to tread depth. Just hope there isn't something else quirky about the 19"s. I think it's either going to be them or the N-rated Scorpion Ice & Snow. I feel ridiculous even ordering the latter right now, given the current heat wave around here.

    Re: Cayenne All Season Tires

Jeffrey Behr has had Toyo tires to 150MPH? NO!!! What a dumsh...er...dummy!

Actually, I've been using Toyo Proxes S/Ts...295/45-20s...on my CT for a few years, and indeed I was lucky enough to find enough empty road with NO traffic around to get it to 150MPH...not for very long, of course. Even with 3 guys plus some luggage and going uphill a little, it was still accelerating! (Gary, I promise I will NOT do that this Sept.!)

I'm now buying Hancook Ventus ST RH06s not becaue they're better in any way but because they include a free road-hazard warranty from the factory.

"Why, officer, clearly your laser gun must have malfunctioned! Jeminy Crickets, man, this is a TRUCK! These are mud & snow tires. And look at all this crap we've got packed in the back. And my brother-in-law in the back seat must weigh 275. Yeah, he looks white as a sheet and he's got a death grip on the arm rest, but he always looks a little pasty and he's just admiring the leather. And uphill? That's just nuts. I was doing 75. That thing must have just hit the daily double or something."

You're an inspiration, Jeffrey, - perhaps not to the safe and sane among us, but how many of those oddballs are on this board and what the hell are they doing here, anyway? You've given me a "yeah, but..." to tell my wife whenever she says I'm going too fast.

On a (slightly) more serious note, what tires did you have on before the Toyos and how would you compare the handling?

    Thanks!

What! ... hmmmm ... I guess you'd better let me drive then.

No, just kidding. I've already had a ticket this year in the Boxster. I don't need another one.

I have not been able to get to 150 in my Cayenne S. It will cruise at 130 easily, and gets up to that speed without a problem, but starts running out of steam above that. The best I've seen is 138.

But not in September! Agreed! We would both do well to play it safe.

I have three unrelated major failure reports on Pirelli Scorpions that convinced me not to buy the N rated Scorpion off-road tire. This is completely unscientific, anecdotal information but it scared me off the Scorpion (failures were of various kinds, various cars, but all Scorpions on SUV's).

Ouch I appreciate your disclaimer about the non-scientific nature of your report, but that seems to be enough smoke that there's bound to be a little fire. I've never been a big fan of Pirellis on my previous cars (not looking to start a flame war with anyone - just my personal experience), but I'm pretty happy with the Rossos that came on the truck. But a major failure on a truck with no spare is a real pain, even if it doesn't happen at 150 mph.

    Thanks for the info!

"On a (slightly) more serious note, what tires did you have on before the Toyos and how would you compare the handling?"

I switched from the originals, 255/18 Bridgestones. The ride and handling were a little more harsh and direct but not substantially. I love the way my CT handles with both the Toyos and Hancooks. And it weighs 5600 pounds!

    Re: Cayenne All Season Tires

Thanks very much for the good info, Jeffrey. Unless something radical happens before I get around to ordering, I think I'll try the Proxes. You guys have a fun and (relatively) safe trip to wherever you're going in September!

    Re: Cayenne All Season Tires

YW, sigs, and TY. We're going to SW Colorado for fall-colors fotografy.

Oh boy--I can break another tire and junk another pair of wheel rims on Engineer Pass 'Road'! I can hardly wait!

Great! Hope we can look forward to some more gorgeous pics (not more of the battered rims, though - good luck!). Have been trying to convince my wife to make that same trip this September, but haven't had much luck. Her idea of "off-road" in the mountains is a poorly maintained asphalt county road. Will keep a good thought for you guys (and your rims)
