Short Shifter (retrofit) - first impressions

Just picked up my car from the OPC after having the Short-Shifter option fitted to my C2S Cab

First impressions are that it's definitely more 'punchy' than the standard shifter, and does indeed make the driving experience feel more connected. Gears aren't any harder to get in than before, nice and smooth. I think it may take me a while to get used to not holding the clutch in for so long though...

In short (no pun intended), I like it!!

It's not as big a gear-throw difference as I thought it was going to be however, and practically Pounds400 (even with a PCGB parts discount) seems a lot for such a slight change. But hey, these cars are about maximum enjoyment factor, so I definitely made the right choice (especially as I have a track day booked tomorrow to practice with!)

Re: Short Shifter (retrofit) - first impressions

Congrats on the sport shifter Alex, I am also considering having it retro fitted onto my 997. Let us know your track day impressions.

Re: Short Shifter (retrofit) - first impressions

Quicker shifting...I love it too much.
and then there was the boring tiptronics.....;-)

Shortshifter should be standard. why do we have to pay for this......and PSE., our Porsches should naturally 'sing' without costing a dime more.

    HELLO FERDINAND..you listening?

Agreed. Furthermore, for the cost of PSE, it should add a few ponies, as well. Even from Porsche's marketing position,
I'd think they'd take some market share from the aftermarket vendors if their exhausts were performance competitive.
Let's face it. If you gain 3-5% from an exhaust swap, you're doing well.

    Alex,

Could you post some pics of the short shifter in-situ. You've whet my appetite for summut new. 4,000 miles now since the beginning of May and I now need some short shift lovin.

Thanks to the hot hot weather you have now

In winter , engaging first gear is a little bit harder, but nothing dramatic. I love the short shifter

Re: Short Shifter (retrofit) - first impressions

I think the difference is huge!

On the PDE day at Milbrook, the car I drove had a standard throw on the gearshift. I kept hitting my hand on the handbrake (no idea why!). So there must be quite some difference - that has never happened on my car (Which has a short shifter)

Maybe I'm just crap at changing gear!

Re: Short Shifter (retrofit) - first impressions

It is indeed a huge 'experience' difference, just the throw differnce doesn't seem that much to me. Saying that I drove a new Turbo with normal Shifter today and after adjusting to my own new one it did feel a LOT more labored.

ResB, don't have any before and after pics to show you but the Porsche site indicates this...

I would def recommend this option

I know it seemed a silly question but I've seen the image on the porsche website but wasn't sure about the hardwood finish. Do you just use the standard gear knob? Talking of gear knobs I saw one in a magazine a while ago, I believe it was carbon/aluminium one and it looked incredible. I asked the dealer if he could locate it for me and never got any further. I'll see if I can locate it again myself. If I remember correctly it was shown on a review of a GT3. The quest begins here.
