Re: Should I Trade in My 2006 997S for a Turbo? WHY?
Living with an older version of this comparo, I'll throw in my two cents. My 993 turbo is tracked-modded quite a bit, including bigger (laggier) turbos. My 993C4S has a 3.8 upgrade, sport clutch, short gears, bigger brakes, yada, yada....
I love them both, but honestly, most of the time, the 3.8 C4 is more pleasure to drive. Sure, it's slower and would lose a lot more drag races. But it makes better noises and offers instantaneous throttle response. I spend longer in each gear and the top end pull is more intoxicating as a result.
My turbo is a track tool: a super stiff, point and shoot, hairy monster (and quite scary to drive, as I get older...). My C4S is so much more a "real" car, with all the wonderful Porsche sensations people visiting these boards crave - and no lag whatsoever.
That said, I'm buying a 997TT (because I'm old now, and like cushy, new technology). The C4S I'll pawn off on my best friend. And the 993 turbo may hang around for smallish track days.....but I bet it disappears within 5 years....
Speed and technology ARE addicting, but there IS something to be said for non-turbo (non GT3) "normal" Porsche products. They seem more pure, in utility and spirit.
Ugh, dorky car philosopher of the day.
