    detailing suggestion

since getting my tt last week i've been detailing it myself prior to having a clear bra installed next week ( 3wk.wait ) i.e. no roadwork. i'm sure you have read in the owners manual about "waxing" the wheels with no explaination. the real reason is to do something, anything really about the brake dust (non-pccb). you don't have to wonder long about the reason for the brakedust grey powder coating on the wheels.

Now wheel waxing inherently has to be a pain in the butt. i found a product that makes it relatively quick and easy. maguiar's " quik wax " it's a non-aresol spray wax. spray it on a microfiber towel, wipe it on all the spokey bits, let it haze over and wipe it off with a minimum of residue.. done

    Hi Roadtrip

The only way to do it properly is wheels off and wax; then wash at least weekly. Zymol produce wheel wax, after applied brake dust comes off so easily.
    Enjoy your new car.

    Re: detailing suggestion

I used Rejex on my wheels. I put on 2 coats, probably over a year ago, and when I wash my wheels, it's like having a "non-stick baking pan" finish, everything wipes off with ease, it's fantastic. I did the same as LB-Greg....wheels off and Rejex'ed, then put back on.

    Re: detailing suggestion

I was wondering if the brake dust would be less of an issue w/ the turbo's brakes vs. the 997 S. It's the only thing I dislike about my car.

    Re: detailing suggestion

I know that the brake dust on my turbo is much worse than it was on my 997S. Both have/had steel brakes. Maybe the dust will lessen as the miles accumulate, but I doubt it.
I waxed my wheels using Mcquire's Tech wax. Is the Zymol product that much better?
What is the best way to lift the car, without the use of a garage lift? I would love to be able to remove the wheels at home occasionally.

    Re: detailing suggestion

Wonder if they use the same compound? If so I guess the larger pad attached to the 6 piston caliper having a larger surface area might explain the increase in brake dust. A real pain.

I don't have any experience lifting my cars at home but I'm sure someone here might.

    Re: detailing suggestion

...and hence the reaon I got the PCCBs!

    Dan

    Re: detailing suggestion

Me too and I can't see any dust...thats after 1500+ kilometers...zero dust and the braking is like a vise. I don't regret spending the extra money.

    Re: detailing suggestion

Aside from the obvious performance advantanges of PCCB's, it a high price to pay for a LOT less brake dust. But, when I'm cleaning the wheels, I wish I did have them. Oh well, I still LOVE the car!

    Re: detailing suggestion

ok, if you guys are this deep into the wheel thing here's another one i came across in my garage.. the valve stem caps on the tt look well, cheap. like something from say pep boy's. the caps on my wife's sc430 look machined. consider a visit to your local lexus dealer where for 4 bucks each you can pick up something that looks tt worthy.

    Re: detailing suggestion

I had very ice caps(OEM silver) on my C4S but the stems were different..alas they won't fit the TT. I agree with you they look...cheap.

Got the crest valve stem caps and then painted w/ a tiny little brush the crests black so they match the center caps perfectly.

It's easier than it sounds, you just paint the whole crest and then whipe a towel across the wet paint so it only stays in the crest. (2 minutes each vale cap)

    Re: detailing suggestion

With the TPMS you can't get too fancy with the tire valve caps,--they can't be metal.

    I'm very interested in why.

    Re: detailing suggestion

Someone said not to use metal valve caps as they will effect the TPMS sensor, causing improper readings. Please post how they work......

i've used metal caps which came with aftermarket wheels on my gti.. i never had any problems, the only problem i can see is that the wheel may vibrate, but thats only if its not balanced without the metal cap...

in fact the cap is so light it wont cause wheel vibration.
i think the valve will have more weight in it..

and i can remember my mate having some metal valve caps which you could tighten up with small kind of small spanner.

and he never had wheels problems after he fitted them...

also on the subject of wheel things porsche make valve stem holders which stop rotational force on the valve!

but porsche valve caps are alloy and work perfect, ive not tried them but a valve cap is a valve cap and should work the same as anyother valve cap, except the porsche ones look better...

trouble is valve caps attract attention from those school kids who want porsche caps for their bmx bikes!
