    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

I wonder what they did to the S2000 and RX-8 to make them compete with the SL55 and the M3 CSL, because normally they would have walked away quite easily. The Elise is a great track car, and has a great power/weight ratio. The same cannot be said for the other three (was the other one a Miata?!?!)

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

Seemed pretty fair to me? The CSL probably had achieved such a comfortable lead, he might have been ensuring the win towards the end. It's hard to say what happened. Wish there were English translations as well.

The S2k is not the slouch in this group, as you can see by the laptimes below. Though it can't match the Elise in braking and corner speed, the Elise could not pass it once they were side by side down the straight. The Miata suffers from its underpowered state.

    Fast lap times:
    BMW M3 CSL: 1'06"88
    Lotus Elise: 1'07"26
    Honda S2000 1'07"93
    MB SL55 AMG 1'08"30
    Mazda RX-8 1'10"13
    Mazda Miata 1'11"34

Sort of a strange comparison of a mixed group (personality wise).

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

hahahaha love the sl mang..............btw, excellent dl speeds

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

Well I wasn't expecting the SL to "perform" against the likes of the pack.

Has anyone noticed how upon getting onto a straight the SL just "easily" overtakes the other cars as if they're standing still! Corners is well M3 territory.

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

Yea but what happened at the start, why didn't the SL pull on the M3? Check out the smoke at the start that's why. Driver didn't know how to drive it. M3 probably used launch control.

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

Yeah I was wondering also, the driver probably didn't put the car in manual mode, and well you shouldn't drive with ESP off unless you know how to drive a 500bhp 700Nm car! Especially not on the track, and he wasn't skidding the car round corners, just taking it very very easy.

Still, doubt if it would have made much more difference...

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

I think it would have reeled the S2000 and Elise in.

He did seem a little conservative around the track to me compared to the other guys. I know the old guy that was driving the CSL is a real kamikaze in other best motoring videos

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

I'm guessing ESP was indeed off because the SL55 driver did have to catch oversteer in a few places. Even when it is off, your launch can be compromised because the system still brakes individual wheels to avoid wheelspin. I suppose it wasn't perfect, but after the first corner, you cannot really expect the SL55 to keep with the Elise and S2k can you? The SL55 is really hurt by its weight in each braking zone and it's speed at the apex cannot be as high. The car likes a slow in, fast out approach for best times. Otherwise it may not make the corner.

Still, who cares, the SL55 isn't made for this kind of driving.

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

fwiw, an SL55 wth perforance packsge delimited to 300km/hr did the Nring in 8.03...

I know GT3 and other Porsches are sub 7.55 cars, but thats pretty impressive, no?

You Porsche fans have got me obsessed with track performance!

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

    Yes it is.

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

    Thank you.

Just like to add and please please let me gloat, thats quicker, yes quicker than 360M/575/V 12 Vanquish, M3/M5 and ahh, lets just leave Porsche times out of this!

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

that 4400 lb pig "performed" exactly as expected. i'm sure the guy just loved the numb electronic brakes to go with that slush box too. further, the tires would get worse and worse the longer that race would have gone on. they just don't make a lot of track tires for ships on wheels. it looks like just another luxo/straight line rocket from benz.

    Re: Best Motoring: CSL v Elise 111S v SL 55 v RX7 v S2000

    ouch.
