    Evil MY08 Speculation

Pure speculation on my part (and building on what gets posted here), but with Porsche's currency hedges expiring next year, could they be postponing PDK, an HP bump, slight cosmetic refreshening, iPod/sat radio, etc as part of a cushion to soften the blow from a huge price increase?

Say for example, the Carrera gets the 3.8, the S gets X51 as standard, and the 4s get the front from the turbo. Throw in new wheels, maybe LCD taillights and presto, a $20k price increase.

Paranoid. Perhaps, but they are masters of price engineering.

    Re: Evil MY08 Speculation

a 20K price increase would kill sales of the 911 if you ask me. I don't see how any car company could justify a price increase that high.

    Re: Evil MY08 Speculation

I think for 2008 they may incorporate a few of the 3.8 X51 parts or adopt direct fuel-injection to bump to about 375 hp for 997S, base model will probably be tweaked to around 345hp like the old 996 X51....they'll probably throw in a few more goodies for '08 like standard power seats (with no-cost delete for track hounds) and standard Bose + Bluetooth + Ipod input, but even with all those extras they couldn't realistically get away with more than $5K price increase for 2008 imho.

Of course you realize that Porsche will release NO INFORMATION about any of this until August 01, 2007.

    Not bad.

    Re: Evil MY08 Speculation

this is what scares me about ordering a 07 997s now.. and not waiting for 08..but then again.. that would be one long long year =)

    Re: Evil MY08 Speculation

You can come back to this posting in 24 months and see how I did. Been a Porsche customer for 32 years and that is NOT the way Porsche operates. They will continue to offer the 3.6 and 3.8 Carrera and Carrera S respectively and will merely add a few special features but there will be no cosmetic changes or power adds. Why would Porsche, who generally focuses upon profitability, throw in the X51 power kit when they're making money on it today. Their arrogance tells them that they don't have to try hard to keep up with the other auto manufacturers as they have a special nitche market. The earliest we might see cosmetic or power 'adjustments' would be in 09. Remember, in 08 they will be introducing the Panamera and all eyes will be on those, so there is no point to attracting attention to the 911 line when they are launching that new 4-door sport-sedan. Then, in 2009, to help prop up laggard sales of the 997 line due to the Panamera, they will boost hp and features in the 997. It will stay a "997" internally, but just get a little refreshing.

    Re: Evil MY08 Speculation

Might be fun to speculate on the marketing gimmicks they might incorporate into the car. You know, the stuff purists were able to barely tolerate as..., ahem..., "new buyers" were incited to purchase. E.g. 19s, quads, wart, no spare... .

Maybe the (expensive?) retractible spoiler will become a thing of the past in favor of a (cheaper) permanent big-a**ed wing!?

    Re: Evil MY08 Speculation

I had a whale tail on my last Porsche and have to say I like the design and execution of this car. It literally doesn't stick it in your face, but it's there because it IS necessary.

LOL. There's this car club which stuffs food wrapped in aluminum foil into the crevices of their engines and goes for a drive. They eventually end up stopping somewhere, opening their hoods and having a picnic with the hot cooked food. Unnnnnn-believeable.

If you have a 997 now I would wait, if you don't go ahead and buy a used 997 like an 05. This way you will have something fun to drive now and you can order an 08 or 09 for that matter.

I actually did that myself many years ago with my first Porsche,--a 914. But,--I found a much more effective cooking method,--my dishwasher at home!

Simply take your best fish fillets and double wrap them with dill, olive oil and lemon juice, and place it (with the aluminum foil) in the top rack of your dishwasher. Run a regular cycle. When it's done dinner is ready!

Gee Dan, you just blew my mind. You leave out the dishsoap right?

Technically, Porsche's fx hedges don't expire next year. They are hedging out multiple years (have disclosed up to 3 years ahead, but don't be surprised if they extend the hedges out to 5 years), but the hedge rates in coming years will not be as favorable as in recent years, so your main point is valid. But to put these potential fx headwinds into perspective, assume the fx headwind next year is Euro 100 million. This means that Porsche will need to find roughly Euro 1000 in higher prices or lower costs/content per vehicle to offset that fx headwind. In otherwords, not terribly worrisome, but rather a nuisance to their profit growth goals, and will not necessitate drastic product changes as you describe. More interesting/risky are the growing competition from other European and likely Asian companies, and how Porsche will respond. From a buyer's perspective, it should be great! Cheers.

    Re: Evil MY08 Speculation

I agree with Dan L. 2009 is probably the earliest we would see any changes mostly because of the upcoming Panamera and quite frankly, the 998 could wait until 2010 if rumors of the two door Panamera (928 type) will follow in 2009. Buy your 997 with ease and enjoy.
