    Visit Zuffenhausen

    Dear Friends,

I will soon go to Zuffenhausen for a factory tour. Could those of you who know the place make some recommendations on what to visit there, except from the factory itself (like the Exclusive department, Porsche concession in Stuttgart, etc.) ?

Thank you so much for your advice

    Re: Visit Zuffenhausen

Visit Techart & Gemballa in Leonberg (20min. from Zuffenhausen)
I organized a factory tour in June for 30 people.
The next day we visited the new Mercedes Museum. Everybody was overwhelmed by the beauty of the building and the quality of the exposed cars. Believe me, we are all Porsche nuts, but everybody saw this visit as a highlight of the whole trip. We were more than 3 hours in the museum and I think I have seen half of it.

    Greets,
    Rufie.
You can find lots of pics of Zuffenhausen on my blog :

    Re: Visit Zuffenhausen

Have a great trip Nico..and don't forget the mini camera to take some spy pics, if you do see anything special..

    Re: Visit Zuffenhausen

Thank you Gnil and thank you Rufie for the tips. I am a car fan before being a Porsche addict and I will without doubt enjoy the Mercedes museum.

Re. Zuffenhausen, does someone know if the factory tour includes a visit to the Exclusive department ? Would love to them work there.

    Thanks again

No it does not. You start in the Museum then go through the assembly hall, 2 floors where they build 911's. Then to the engine works then it's over where it ends in the museum again. Very cool tour. I did see 2 997 Targa's rolling around but didn't have camera ready. Be prepared to snap spy pics!

Stuttgart is very nice city, we stayed 2 extra days.

    Re: Visit Zuffenhausen

Make sure you see the engine assembly area, as they will have four complete engines on display (911 flat six, Boxster flat six, Cayenne V-8, and CGT V-10). In particular, ask to see the back of the V-8 and V-10, where the clutch/transmission would mate to the engine, and note the size difference between the two. Then ask what they learned or sought to achieve with the V-10 and what that might mean for the future. Have a great trip.

From my last visit in June'06, the tour guides have very limited knowledge, they will only say what they were taught to say, nothing more. Most of them are not long term employees.....mostly students or interns.
We were shown the exclusive department which was very new and it feature unique options that were mostly customised.
    Enjoy your visit.

    Re: Visit Zuffenhausen

I suggest you prepare a list of good questions for your guide. I went through the tour on 12 July and they do a good show. Porsche's factory has come a long way from 1978 when I last took the tour. They have seriously engaged with "Just In Time" processes,--they crank out a 911 in about 55 minutes, with just about 30 minutes of inventory on the factory grounds at any time. They have 150 trucks coming in there each day,--and they produce 150 cars a day (just at Zuffenhausen,--two shifts). They won't permit cameras. But keep your eyes opened for unusual things like 997TTs going through, or Targas. You won't be shown the raw body operations or the paint areas. You will simply see the assembly areas which start from where the raw, but fully painted and cured bodies are started down the line. Notice the adoption of robotics and how they orchestrate the entire process. Today's biggest problem for Porsche is finding a place to put the completed cars! They move 40 cars a day through the new car customer delivery center, and they are constantly queuing cars just in support of that!

Sadly, the Porsche Museum is not that great,--but you will see three cranes out across from the Porscheplatz as they are pouring concrete for the NEW museum. It won't be ready until 2007. Try to walk over to Werk I which was where all new car deliveries were done many years ago. It also houses most of the Porsche upper management folks.

I wish I could suggest some other sites in Stutrgart but my focus was always upon the factory area. Any Porsche fanatic will go nuts just hanging out around the factory streets as you will see so many things come and go! Another good 'spy location' is just outside the Weissach R&D center out to the west. Many things are going on out there that they don't want anyone to see!

    Re: Visit Zuffenhausen

Dan L has it right, it sure is a wonder land for any Porsche enthusiast. About the museum yes it is small but some special cars in there and as stated the new one will open end of '07 with about 70 cars on display as a rotating museum.

When I was there picking up my car on May 12th 06 the Spring Grand tour was also taking place. I over heard what their tour included being special guests with PCA escorts and they got to see a whole lot more than what a regular tour guests sees. Such as the exclusives department and the leather work shop plus even I believe the track.

In any case enjoy it and don't forget the camera!!!

I was more fortunate this past July, perhaps because of the group I was with or my business interests with car companies, to have a very well informed Porsche employee take me along. (I visit all the German auto companies about twice a year.) Also, final production is now in excess of 150/day, although the paint shop (even operating 24 hrs/day with 3 shifts) remains the bottleneck and needs to be addressed in the near future. Cheers.

    Re: Visit Zuffenhausen

    Dan and Harry,

Many, many thanks for the detailed information. Good to know what the programme will be, either to prepare good (I hope...) questions or to have a more careful eye to what I am going to see.

    Thanks again
