    New S550 Cabriolet

    I just acquired a new S550 Cab and I thought would share a few observations. I had a chance to test drive an S550 coupe a while ago and was very impressed w/ the quality of the build and the driving experience.  The V8 is strong and silky smooth.  The interior materials are first rate and the attention to detail was far better than I expected.  I wanted to acquire a convertible that could take 4 passengers if necessary and that limits the choices considerably.  The S550 was about $100K USD less than a Bentley GTC V8 and I found the Mercedes to be a much more modern and agile (if that's a word one can apply to this segment of automobile) than the Bentley.  In sport mode the engine is quite responsive and the car cruises in above 80mph on the open highway effortlessly. Steering is reasonably well weighted and communicative and the suspension is superb for a car of this weight and size. The car rides on air (literally) but does not float or wander. The soft top is extremely well done and gives the impression of a coupe rather than cabriolet even at high speeds. There are lot of electronic gizmos and gadgets, but the heated air to the neck (Airscarf) and wind deflector (Aircap) are very useful.  My wife of course is enamored of the massage seats and the ambient lighting.  I had always admired the 280SE 3.5 cabriolet of 1971-72 and I give credit to Mercedes for re-introducing a full size cabriolet.  Of course the C and E class have their own iterations but I think Mercedes has made extra effort to provide the build quality and attention to detail that befits the S class.  IMG_1458.JPG IMG_1460.JPG

    Nice cruiser. Comfortable and modern. When you go luxury, always go age and technology over brand. Otherwise, you're mainly paying for a badge and some wood/leather.

    Congrats, Grew up in 450sel 6.9  back in 76 and always admired the suspension / power / ride / class. the new one remind me the same.

    Congrats - this car is very elegant and probably the best 4 seater convertible you can buy!  I like the Silver on it, looks stunning!

    there was a fully restored 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet on display at Mercedes World Brooklands about 2 years ago; restored by, I think, a Swiss (or may be German) outfit .. it looked better than new 

    Euro 650,000!

    You can get good ones below 200k€

    Thanks Lars but this is not exactly what I was talking about. I referred to the 280SE 3.5, the V8. This is a 250 and the older "Hochkühler" version.

    The older models had "Hochkühler" and not yet the V8 but I guess it was 1969 or 1970 where they changed to "Flachkühler" and also started to put in the 3.5 liter V8, the car's name was still 280SE but 3.5 was added.

    if S cabriolet is too pricey, I recommend the new E class cabriolet .. perfectly proportioned. elegant, beautiful and almost a proper 4 seater.

    I have not seen prices under 250k for a V8 cabriolet in mint condition over the last 2 years probably (only looking at auctions).

    It is interesting that both cars in Lars' links have air condition, quite expensive add on. But still, both of the cars are 2.8l R6.

    I didn't find any 8 Cylinder for sale. They are for sure very rare. 

    However - I wouldn't mind owning a R6 - the car is a beauty and with a family the best alternative for stylish convertible Sundays. Smiley

    The SE is wonderful to drive and actually feels quite modern compared to other oldies kiss

    Me too.  The more I see one (any of the variants), the more I like it.  Great design.
