    Very interesting...

Re: Article About Car Color: Its A Drab, Drab World

...and Porsche's standard range of solid and metallic colours are more drab than most. Look at the 06 colour choice of metallics, two dark blues, a range of greys, a grey-silver (arctic), a drab red-brown in anything but brilliant sun(carmon) and black. Solids of white, speed yellow, guards red and black. Only three Porsche colours in my memory are bright and memorable, orient red and polar silver (neither currently available) and cobalt blue ( a special $$$PoundsPoundsPounds choice). At least cobalt blue has made it into the standard range for 07 replacing lapis blue which becomes a special.

The above comments should get me shot down in flames.

    The Colors Are Boring

I noticed it when I was coming back from the shore yesterday. A sea of silver, grey and white. How exciting . Nothing wrong with those colors but please how many more silver cars do we need? Its sad that a high performance car like a Porsche blends into the woodwork with all the SUV's and sedans out there.

    Re: The Colors Are Boring

This definitely has something to do with the second hand market and supply and demand as well. The general consensus is that Arctic Silver and Black always sell very well first or second hand. These days, when you ask for a white Porsche (except GT3 thanks to Porsche's marketing department), the sales professional in his best effort would advise you against taking solid white because the trade-in or resale-value would be around 5% lower than all other cars. Frankly if it were for me, I would not take a white Porsche simply for that reason. It is very very hard to sell. The same can be said about Speed Yellow because many feel that the colour is not for everyone. It is sad because I do love exotic colour cars but the trend in HK makes it very hard to own such a car. However, if you were to look at Japan, you will see that white cars are very popular and you frequently see F430 spider in WHITE which is quite foreign to me.

All Cars Depreciate The Second The Go Off The Lot

So whats the point? If everyone buys silver or black and than you have a glut of cars. Though maybe people have a need to conform. I dont know.

I still say, buy what you want.

Typical chicken & egg problem: are second hand cars in silver/black color selling well because everybody wants these colors or is everybody buying silver/black because they aren't too many other choices
I guess the latter is true, as the car manufacturers are trying to set trends (good for them as they are able to realise economies of scale if the variety on colors is narrowed down to 2 or 3 "main colors") and of course all manufacturers are following the same trend.
Look at the fashion industry - same system but way shorter cycles of course: one year all manufacturers are offering green clothes, next year orange ones etc.

Silver Has Been Popular For Years Now...

Its amazing now but you see silver on everything from sedans to SUVs to motorcycles. Its really out of control. Silver is nice but its not a color that pops out at you. Something that just fades into the background. Maybe thats what people want.

I think the public has become very color adverse. Kind of goes with all the beige houses.

I agree to a point. When I specified my Porsche I listened very closely to the salesman and in particular the used car buyer. Unless you are made of money, it is pointless to uneccesarily lose potentially PoundsPoundsPounds$$$ at sale time because of unsuitable colour combinations. You may really like say, colour to sample nipple pink with polka-dot interior and yellow seat belts. But if no-one else does then you may not even be able to sell your car when the time comes and if you can sell it will be at give-away money. So specification has to be a compromise between fantasy and reality. Unless you've just won Pounds15 million on the lottery.

Re: All Cars Depreciate The Second The Go Off The Lot

You guys get it the wrong way around.

If car manufacturer offers mostly different shades of greys and blacks, it's because people who buy cars want these colors.

Car manudacturers are not dumb. They offer colors people want. That's why porsche is always re-thinking its greys. It was seal, now it's meteor but no one can actually see the difference between these 2 colors.

If people were ready to order bright colors, porsche would offer them. Actually porsche would have no choice but to offer them if they don't want sales to fell. But the truth is, no one has the courage to do so.

For instance, I've never seen a red golf, not even a GT1. People are afraid. Lose money, too gay, too flashy, too what ever.

Re: All Cars Depreciate The Second The Go Off The Lot

Not sure I agree. Is it that people want silver or is it because silver has been marketed to them? I tend to think its the marketing. In the US anyway it has become very, very conservative with everything especially color. If you drive around the US all the houses are the same color and the cars are all the same. Maybe people have a need to conform. Like I said I dont know.

I wouldnt worry to much about the car depreciation because Porsche's seem to to take a huge hit regardless of color. I looked at a 2003 Boxster. Originally sold for $62.5 and now is selling for $39K. Thats about a 33% depreciation hit. Not insignifigant.

    Ahem...
    My gallery

I reckon that about 50% of GTI's on the road in the UK are red

Re: All Cars Depreciate The Second The Go Off The Lot

    62.5 - 39 = 23.5; 23.5 / 62.5 = 37.6% - even worse than you suggest.

However: $23,500 / 48 months (07s are out now, an 03 is four years old) is only $490 per month, which seems reasonable.

Re: All Cars Depreciate The Second The Go Off The Lot

You are very correct. I did an off the cuff guestimate but you are still right.

Thats a huge hit if you think about it.

Re: All Cars Depreciate The Second The Go Off The Lot

    Not everyone conforms.

I ordered a Paint To Sample 997S Cab in Blue Turquoise wit natural brown leather. So far, it's the only one in that color,--viva la difference!
