Considering 19" wheels or TURBO wheels

I have the current boxster s 18" wheels and am considering the 19" turbo wheels. My vehicle is arctic silver on black interior. Also considering either carrera s sport wheels in silver or BLACK or 19" TURBO WHEELS. I think black painted wheels really look a bit personal and I find it a bit out of sync with my boxster s but the Porsche official siet has it in carrera s in 19" painted in black. Inputs? For or against? Must balance 18" v. 19" ride comfort and cost. No idea but my sales said 19" will seriously compromise pickup and ride comfort and it's really not for boxster s. I would give up too much for visual aesthetics. Anyone?

Try the 3D Panorama and you can see. I am 1/2 1/2. It's cool maybe simply cos it's on the site. My heart tells me I should do the carrera s in black and my mind tells me I shouldn't... just get the 19" turbo wheels.

Re: Considering 19" wheels or TURBO wheels

If u have PASM, there is no problem in getting 19" whatsoever.
The ride comfort will be almost the same...and so will the handling.
In fact, the 18" are probably better handling than the 19" - but 19" look better.
If u DONT have PASM, think twice, cause it may be a hard ride, indeed.

The reasons why Porsche doesn't officially deliver 19" to the former 986S model, are these:
    a) Politics. "Let's give people who buy a new model (987) something extra".
    b) Ride comfort and durability: The 986S (no PASM as u know) is hard to begin with, and 19" rims will kill any comfort left in the car + in the long run possibly shake and rattle the car apart.
    U can easily fit 987-rims on a 986.

So PASM or no PASM should really decide for u IMO

Re: Considering 19" wheels or TURBO wheels

Also have 19's with PASM and can only report the ride is fine while the handling is "electric". I would be truly amazed if the car was as sharp on 18's.

Ever wondered why F1 cars dont ride on big rims?
Apart from the fact that the larger amount of rubber on the tires provide a bit of damping on a car with no damping.

The 19" wheels probably feel different, but I'll bet you they are not better when it comes to handling that 18".

The easy answer is that FIA's F1 regulations prescribe the rim and tire sizes, so the F1 designer does not have a free choice of dimensions regardless of which size might be best.

Re: Considering 19" wheels or TURBO wheels

Dr. Phil and all, I have no PASM. Alright the sales professional cautioned me twice not to get it. He just had a 987s' customers who got the 19" carrera s wheels and had to change them back to 18" after 3 months. His wife could not stand the stiff ride and the rattle and she said she would puke. (exagerration)

Of course the tyre store selling aftermarket rims said it would be great to get 19" with thinner tyres and wider tyres to make the car look good and he recommend painting them black as well (extra money I guess). He recommended (he couldn't get the turbo wheels and I think Porsche is protecting the dealership's profits and in HK it would cost 7000 USD with a discount for the set of 19" carrera sport wheels quite steep plus it would not add to resale) BBS, OZ and some other aftermarket good brands. He also said he could put colour Porsche caps on them by charging me extra money.

Tires would look very different otherwise!

What the heck? The reason you don't see 19" on 986 are:

    a) The wheels are too big for the car
    b) The handling is worse with 19"

For the 986, a 17-1/2" would be about perfect

On the 987, Porsche made the wheel arches much bigger so they could sell more bling. Unless you weren't paying attention, the wheels on 986 are wider with lower profile tires. Porsche put larger diameter but narrower wheels with higher-profile tires on the 987 to improve the ride. In Porsche tradition, if you want wider/lower-profile tires, it'll cost ya. Fitting wheels from a 987 onto a 986 is a mixed bag because the offsets are different and the wheels are often too narrow.

For the original poster, you may also want to have a look at Champion Motorsport wheels.

Re: Considering 19" wheels or TURBO wheels

I have 18s on my 986 and wish I had stayed with the 17s. The ride comfort is worse (although it's definitely good) and I don't push it anywhere near the limit.

I'm sure there are tons of people that want to swap your 18" against their 17".

I'm very happy with my 18" Carerra wheels on my 986s (2003). They look great and in my opinion are very comfortable

Note that i don't have the sport suspension...
