Always M5 had more power but it was also slower in acceleration times. I have the feeling that the myth is the M3, not the M5. And because of it's more compact dimensions it's the driver's choice.

No trade. I expect to see nearly similar performance #'s for new M3 vs. 997S, but the M3 has no physical presence compared to a 997S. Decent lines on the M3 for a Bangle-- improved over the BMW 3-series sedan version-- but M3 will look too much like every other VW Jetta/Infiniti IS350/Pontiac G6 coupe...styling is snooze-ola.

I hope BMW gives it adecent set of brakes, they never really got there with the E46 model, even on the CSL. It'll be a crackign car i'm sure, but the 335i coupe is pretty much all you need in an everyday car.

My friend got a Z4M roadster 2 months ago. First day, his engine light came on; 3rd day, his brake light came on; about a week later, something's wrong with his convertible top, then something went wrong with his window. So i'm beginning to doubt reliabilities of new BMW's.
IMO, The new 3 series just doesn't work for me, i hate the back of those new 3 coupe. when you're driving a 911, you're driving a 911. a porsche is a porsche, "there's no substitute"

I sold my Z4 3.0 for a Boxster S...easy decision.
My modded M3 for the 997? That's VERY tough considering the price gap. The new M3 for a 997? Performance-wise, I'm afraid the M3's got the 997's number. The 911's will always have more "presence" - but with the additional price. The new M3 should be in the $55k-$60k ballpark range. It will definitely be faster than the M5 (it's a weight issue). For some reason, people think the M5 is faster. But realworld results (and mag testings) show the M3 to always be faster.

That is like comparing apples with oranges, one has nothing to do with the other. I have had both and I liked and still like both and each satisfy me in a different way and every time I got out of one I enjoyed driving the other. However if I was pressured to choose way, hands down Porsche is the winner

Why lose the incredible dynamics of the rear engine 911: incredible grip and unmatched ability to transfer torque to the road, near 50/50 wt distribution during braking, light tactile steering with phenomenal placement of the car? HP wars are for dummies - 911's always outperform more powerful cars because of the rear weight bias, genius chassis and fantastic brakes and suspension.
Even ignoring all that, and I'm not knocking the M3, but c'mon, it's a sporty (ok - very sporty) sedan. A 911 is an iconic sportscar. As has already been said, apples and oranges.

I think that's a valid concern for the USA-assembled Bimmers (x5,X3,z cars).
The M3 will be made in Germany so it'll be better.

na, my 2 cents is a no. A Porsche is a Porsche and an ultimate driving machine is always an ultimate driving machine. I own a boxster s only and just put my deposit down for the new twin turbo 335i coupe as my second car. I think BMW is fine but it just doesn't give you the joy and excitement every morning as much as a Porsche. If you care about speed, you are better off with a Vette to be honest. Porsche to me is more about class and build quality as well as image and reliability. I think a modded EVO or WRX can give porsches a good run for their money. To be honest, the M3 is still a modded version of the 325 i coupe and the presence is really not the same.

does the elitism/class wars ever disappear? ferarri snobber always point out how the 911 turbo is just another 911. and here we have 911 owners dismissing m3 as another 3 series.
the m3 is an entirely different beast then a regular 3series. We're car enthusiast and should appreciate that an m3 is a great car. a monster sports car in sedan's sheep skin.
For that price, power and handling, i'm a bit disappointed that porsche hasn't done more to distance itself (other than price) from its competitors, corvettes, m3, etc. I would love to have both cars in my stable.

So a "foreign" guy rolls up to me today in a CL55 AMG (BTW, ugliest Mercedes ever but it sounds great) and screams out his window at me after cutting me off, "I've got 475 horepower!" (yeah, he said "horepower") "How much do you have?" I said "Sorry, I only have 355 horepower (in my 997S)." He said, even more boastfully "Well my car does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds." I said, "That's great, my car is faster, sorry." He said "Busshit man!" (again I am spelling out his speak phonetically). I said, "OK, let me show you." I never saw him again after that.
Points of the story (i) who cares how much "horepower" the M3 has and (ii) I'm really just telling the story so I can get up to 400 posts and become a Rennteam Pro and I have nothing intelligent to add to the horepower discussion.

I agree.That's why i feel that in case of keeping my C2S it's a matter of time to put X51. Which mean more money for a used car.

Personnally, I wouldn't exchange a porsche for a M3. Cause, first it look like a sedan and I find it's look like a tuned version of the 3 series, with no class what so ever.
Second, it will be an ok performer but not as focused as the 911.
As far as performance goes, I recall seing in top gear show a comparaison with baby aston, M6, and porsche 997s. Guess which was the winner by a wide margin on a very wet small winding road? I'll give you a hint: the car with the less horsepower.
There is no doubt about it, I would chose the 997S without questioning myself, but, if you drool for it why fighting it?
Bottom line is if you're diggin'it go for it. Life is a matter of taste, personal envy and choices.
