Flat spots

Been watching this forum for a while and got lots of great insight about our cars from all the posts i have seen. This is my first popst on the very awesome site now that i have my own.

I have heard some mention of flat spotting on cars that have low profile setup like ours. I of course the best way to prevent it it just drive it but what about times you cant take it out like beeing on vacation for 3-4 weeks or storage in winter? Should i be concerned? How to prevent it? I saw a product called Tirecradle for like $350...not cheap. Does it work.Any one have experience with this product?

Here's an IDEA: Get ready mix concrete and put in large plastic bag. Remove tire from car and set in concrete, until hard. Do this three more times. You now have four form-fitting pads. The problem is to get them exactly aligned/centered on all four tires. Jack car up? Form identical ramps to drive onto?

I stored my C2S last winter without any flatspotting. The tires were inflated to 52PSI. Every 5 or 6 weeks the car was moved a few feet. In the spring, the tire pressure was reduced to 36/42PSI and away I went. No issues with the car or the tires. The car started within seconds. The ride was perfect with no signs of flatspots.

A couple of notes on storing the car. If you wash it before putting it away, go for a nice spirited drive, with some good hard stops. This will dry the brakes and keep rust from forming on the disks. Never store the car for any length of time with the handbrake on. Also, before storing for the winter, change the oil.

BTW, I do keep my battery charger plugged in anytime I will not be using the car for more than a week. This guarantees the battery is always good to go. However, in the summer months, even if I am out of town for a couple of weeks, I don't change the tire pressure.

Good idea. I believe my car, though deemed perfectly healthy by Porsche service, drains ALOT of battery current when parked. Not sure it would even make it a week.

Hey, thanks for the ideas. The battery maintainer i will use use for sure b/c im sure the computers and other gizmos will draw a steady current. Even the battery on my older BMW dies if it sits more than 2 weeks...worse in winter. Im sure if battery dies on an 997 has got to mean trouble for all the computers on-board. Probably get system falts all over the place.

As TheOldMan stated...I have tried infalting the tires to about 45 psi on my non-p cars and it worked but they were not as low profile. I thought that 52 psi would be pushing the tires near/past its limits so i never tried it that high. But moving it a few feet back/forward seems like a good idea too. As for storage..in winters...i just dont take it out when there is wet salt and/or snow on the roads. In NJ sometimes that goes on and on for a weeks so i thought i'd ask how you all handle it.

Someone mentioned that the handbrake on 996s/997s is separate from the main disk brakes. I heard it brakes separate drum brakes... comments?

Correct. There is a drum brake on each of the rear wheel hubs which is actuated by the parking (hand) brake.

Yes, they will flat spot, but it goes away after 5-10 minutes of driving. As mentioned above, overinflating the tires and rolling the car every few weeks will help.

I did the same thing. Inflated them to about 56 psi and rolled the car back and forth several inches -maybe 18"- every two weeks or so. I also bought two fifteen foot carpet runners from the hardware store. I place the ruuners over the garage floor to keep the tires off the concrete. The runners are an indoor/outdoor carpet and easily roll up for summer storage.
Wash the car, wax it and dry the rotors by braking until the water disperses. I never start the car until spring because dry cold starts are not good; unless necessary.
Fresh oil if possible and add fuel stabilyzer to a FULL tank of fuel.

I'm also in NJ and don't do anything special. The tires do get a a flat spot but it doens't last for more than a few miles. I don't store it, but like you, sharmat, drive the P less in the winter.
