    oil consumption

anyone experience oil consumption in their new C2S in their 1st 1,000 miles??? how much oil did you need to top off to get to mid/max level?

    Re: oil consumption

Used 1 liter of oil in the first 10,000km, most of that in the first few thousand KM. I have not added oil in the last 6,000km (now at 20,000km).

    Re: oil consumption

Mine has 5k miles in almost a year and had to put in about 3/4 quart. Needed that oil around 2500k-3k miles breakin consumption, steady ever since, nothing of concern..

    Re: oil consumption

FWIW, there have been a # of threads about oil consumption, one in particular, that I wish I could locate for you, talked about the guage accuracy. Guess there's a pretty scientifically proven axiom that any guage can be off by a certain amount +/-.

The point is when you add oil, don't necessarily dump in .4 liter/qt as the increment indicated may acutally be as low as .2 liter or high as .6 liter, or something like that.

In my case, I've added 16 oz. in 3200 miles. Also, there's mention in the manual about dilution etc during the breakin period (pg#16 in the US manual)

I hope I haven't confused you, as the point I'm trying to make is don't automatically add oil based on seeing the oil display down a "bar". Check it several times before adding, and when you do add, put in small amounts and check the level again. In my case, I add 4 oz. at a time. You can be 1 bar down and the car can sit for a few days and when you check it, you're at the full mark.

    Re: oil consumption

My brand new 06 S has 1,700 miles- all put on in less than 1 week. It burned .5qts in 600 miles, and burned another .25 qt in the next 1,100 miles.

    Re: oil consumption

C4S, I have gone through about .75 liters of oil in the first 3300 miles. Anyone notice condensation under the oil cap if they look under the cap when the engine is at running temp????

    Re: oil consumption

I had the same. It used more oil at the beginning then now.
Also had condensation and some ' white stuff'. No worry to have.

    Re: oil consumption

I have added 3 litres of Mobil 1 0W-40 to the engine since the beginning. It is sitting at just over 3200 miles today. They generally take a bit more than usual during break in as all the mating surfaces are still sorting themselves out. I would add oil 500ml at a time. As you know with 911s, you don't want to overfill them.

Of course, I didn't exactly baby my car like many do...

Okay, what's the "normal" rate of oil replenishment?

I have 4500 miles and I added three quarts.

    Does this seem about right?

Is this normal or do I have a oil-burner for an engine?

Keep in mind the break-in eats more oil.

Re: Okay, what's the "normal" rate of oil replenishment?

    One liter on 6500km.

Re: Okay, what's the "normal" rate of oil replenishment?

I added about 3 quarts in 4000 miles.

Re: Okay, what's the "normal" rate of oil replenishment?

    800ml in 3400 miles.

Re: Okay, what's the "normal" rate of oil replenishment?

Hummm. Not too much of a stretch to figure this must have alot to do with driving habits. Long trips would burn less oil (fewer cold starts where more oil is presumably burned).

I know I do alot of 30 mile or so trips; hence 3 quarts in 4500 miles??

What about you guys? Lots or few cold starts per total mileage?

    Re: oil consumption

For my C2S, I have the following oil consumption statistics:

    1) the first 1716 miles, I added 650 ml, or about 0.7 quarts;

    2) by 2170 miles, or additional 454 miles, I had to add another 400 ml;

    3) by 2306 miles, or an additional 136 miles, I had to add another 200 ml;

    4) by 3067 miles, or additional 761 miles, I had to add another 200 ml.

    5) by 3615 miles, or an additional 548 miles, it looks like I have to add another 200 ml. (I went for a 200 mile drive today and was running the car between 3,000 - 4,000 rpm most of the time).

That makes an estimated total oil consumption of 1,650 ml, or about 0.456 ml of oil consumption per mile traveled. From my data, it appears that oil consumption is declining as my mileage increases. I was told by a friend that it takes longer for the piston rings to seat properly when using synthetic oil. I'll see what its like when the car gets 5,000 miles on it.

When I asked the dealer about oil consumption (at around 1800 miles), I was told that it was within the normal range.

I polled some Rennteamers a few months ago on oil consumption and got about 10 responses. I got a mean consumption of .289 ml per mile. A rough rule is that you can be 95% sure that your oil consumption is normal if it is within two standard deviations of the mean measure. Based on the small sample response I got, that would place the confidence interval between 0 consumption and 0.555 ml per mile. If this is accurate, that puts my C2S's oil consumption within that interval and is normal.

I'll check the responses on this posting and do some simple computations to see if these newer data significantly alter the results I cited above.

    Re: oil consumption

I just incorporated the latest responses into the database I collected earlier from Rennteam members who responded to my May 1 post. Here are the results (I updated red911's data as he responded to my May 1 post).

For those who probably don't drive their cars especially hard, the mean oil consumption is 0.273 ml per mile (or 0.171 ml per km). The standard deviation is 0.119 ml per mile (or 0.074 ml per km). To be roughly 95% confident that your car's oil consumption is normal, based upon the 17 responses, it should be between 0 and 0.511 ml per mile (or between 0 and 0.319 ml per km). Again, this is a crude number and the sample size is small, but it seems to make sense.

For those who apparently drive their cars more aggressively (a sample size of only 5), the mean oil consumptin is 0.73 ml per mile (or 0.456 ml per km), with a standard deviation of 0.12 ml per mile (or 0.075 ml per km). To be roughly 95% confident that your car's oil consumption is normal for an aggressive driver, it should be between 0 and 0.97 ml per mile (or between 0 and 0.606 ml per km).

One interesting additional point - it appears that the standard deviation is almost the same for the basic driving mode group and those who drive aggressively. So, aggressive driving increases oil consumption, but the spread around that higher mean level is the same as for those who don't drive aggressively.

All of these results fit in with what my dealer had told me last April when I got concerned about oil consumption by my 911S. Basically, it's normal and it will likely decline considerably once the rings are fully seated, which takes longer for cars using synthetic oil.

    Re: oil consumption

Hey Jim: Niiiiice work! Thanks very much for the data. You've made my day. Now I gotta get home and look at my consumption records more closely. Thanks again. Wow.

    Re: oil consumption

thanks for the info. I drove 1st 800miles during hot, humid days and on mostly expressways. Added .50litres oil so far. I recall the manual stating something about more oil consumption on hot humid days and expressway driving. It also said greater evaporations versus shorter trips which locks in moisture in the oil thus giving the impression the oil level is closer to full. sounds like we all have normal oil consumption

    Re: oil consumption

    Thanks MMD.

I like number crunching, always have. As an economist, I often get to do some statistical work.

Porsche, like others in the auto industry, has to have some idea of things like oil consumption, wear rates, etc., elsewise they really couldn't compete as successfully as they are doing. I hope someone from Porsche picks up the info that Rennteam members have provided and are able to put it to good use in making future Porsche's even better.

    Re: oil consumption

Porsche uses stats extensively...its all about avoiding the "fat tails" but we like the W I D E H I P S on the C4S!!!

    Re: oil consumption

I inquired about oil needs when picking up the car at the factory. They didn't think I'd need to add oil during my three weeks with the car in Europe. I did some 'spirited driving' later in the period but was conservative initially. Regardless, it took 3 quarts/litres to put it back up to where it belonged. (3200 on the odometer)
