Re: 997 Turbo - Engine Tuning

The exhaust temps are only a concern at the exhaust valve and port, the turbine and at downpipe. I don't understand all this contrived concern about exhaust temps. 1600 F will kill any catalytic converter out there. If that kind of heat gets anywhere near the mufflers it will blister the paint, instantly discolor the exhaust tips and melt the surrounds. Decreasing backpressure will only DECREASE exhaust temps.

Not much of a "downpipe" on a 997tt

Re: 997 Turbo - Engine Tuning

I would agree that a chip alone may be only $2500 or so, but most tuners combine their chip upgrade with larger turbos, diverters, exhaust systems and the like--with a total bill (depending on what "stage" you purchase) usually well over 10K.

I modded my 996TT to 490ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels, and spent well over that figure. It gets a bit addictive, always looking for more power. I am not saying don't do it, but I am saying that mods usually cost more than initially thought.

I agree, power is VERY addictive. I'm planning on doing a stage 1 - ECU mod only. The drawback is that if you decide to go farther the stage 1 mod is usually money lost since you need to get a re-worked computer program for the higher stage tuning kit.

Just remember, the RT12 RC met with his new 997TT just gained 100 meters or so up to 300kph! What are 100 meters compared to full warranty, highest safety standards etc.

And the RT12 has not just 30-50hp more

"Just" 100 meters? It was a huge difference to me.

Florida is different. ECU tuning will not hurt the car, that only does short bursts of acceleration. However, for european conditions, it probably wouldn't be the best of ideas, as a stand-alone mod.

Very well said. I can't imagine you can do a 200 mph run in Florida for lets say consecutive 3-5 minutes or so.
"Cheap" chip tuning is just a compromise. It may work but it may also create some dangerous situations. My 996 Turbo had at first a simple chip tuning done by a person who was close to engine development by that time. The problem was: he was using a modded prototype (pre-launch) software, we found out later. What happened? Simple: at very hot air temperatures, my car suddenly lost boost pressure from around 1.3 bar to 0.5 bar or so. Now can you imagine what happens if this happens at around 300 kph in a wide Autobahn curve with full throttle applied? I almost lost control of the car, a very unpleasant experience. This experience made me choose RS-Tuning and a much more expensive approach to tuning. It was worth every cent, worked like a charm. Only the aftersales service sucked.

Yeah I would think opening up the exhaust would only lower exhaust temps.

    Amen!

Re: 997 Turbo - Engine Tuning

For the U.S. consumer ... wondering how many folks here will track their 997TT??? tryong not to be sarcastic but what when and where would you use "540" hp, if you dont track the car. the car is plain and simple fast out of the box. ECU mods do affect the warranty if there were to be a problem with the motor. wouldnt you want to wait to see if the new motoer and tubos hold up in the real world befor you begin chipping and tuning them. Porsche/ any company loves to come up with reasons not to honor any warranty item. why give them the ammunition to begin with?

just my opinion, But I will be interested to see how many New TT's i see out on the track being used to there potential..time will see i guess

Re: 997 Turbo - Engine Tuning

    930man,

Good points!! I for one will not be touching mine while under warranty.

I find it no problem at all using the higher than stock power in my 996 Turbo...off the track. WOT pulls in many of the gears is something I do often.

Re: 997 Turbo - Engine Tuning

My wife is itching to take the 997tt to the track, which means I may need to crank up the boost on my 944

Re: 997 Turbo - Engine Tuning

I'll try not to mod the car the first 12 months, apart from a silver crest of course! But the ONE thing I'm having second thoughts about concerning my tranny choice is if I would chose to have the car slightly tuned (stage II material) would Tiptronic still be the right tranny?

Re: 997 Turbo - Engine Tuning

One thing that occurs strange to me is that RC said not to touch the cats; which I would think would be a huge heat issue...

I'm just passing along what I've been told. This doesn't mean that it is 100% correct but I would assume it is 99% correct (due to the source).
