    PCCB

Can anyone tell me if PCCB on turbo makes a greater noise over standard brakes.
I have a friend who has a Mark 2 GT3 and the brakes on it scrape and grind like mad during use around town and this would totally put me off putting them on my car? Thanks in advance!

    Re: PCCB

No, PCCBs on newer porsches do not make any more noise than normal brakes. If they do, they are defective.

    Re: PCCB

That would probably must have been the first generation of the PCCB for the 996 GT3 Mk2.
The 2nd generation PCCBs (350mm) on late models 996 Turbo S, 997 Carreras have eradicated those irritating problems.
The new 997 Turbo features the 3rd generation PCCBs (380mm).

    Re: PCCB

That gives me piece of mind, I dont know if I should tell him his may be faulty, cost him a fortune to replace/repair them I guess.

    Thanks.

Before replacing them tell him to go on highway to do some hard braking. Tell him to go to 90mph (any high speed actually) and brake very firmly (with no one behind) repeat it 3 times 4 times. That might take out the squirks.

My PCCB brakes sometimes make a howling noise, a pretty loud one. It was a phenomenon on older PCCB systems too but compared to them, the noises on the new PCCB have been reduced a lot. I will mention this in our Rennteam Turbo review with some more details.

    Re: PCCB

How many km hv you run in the brakes?

I just installed my old 997S PCCB onto my 997TT....everything seems fine. Prob you better check your disc or calipas ...might be your fd put in the garage for awhile and got rusty. Run for abit might help out!

    Re: PCCB

I will let him know to try that.
I intend to drive the demo car soon and hope it has PCCB to try it out. I would like this to do track days with it. Thanks again for help!

By the way, my PCCB on my 997tt have not made any noise yet. Stops incredibly. Best braking production car I have ever driven.

    Re: PCCB

Are the PCCB's worth a 9K option if one is not going to track car on a regular basis?

Yes, if you like great brakes and no brake dust. My concern is the life-span of the PCCB rotors with frequent track use. They are very expensive to replace.

    Re: PCCB

AUM, The standard TT and GT3 brakes use the 6 piston calipers from the CGT's PCCBm perhaps that is enough stopping power that is also not as costly to replace rotors/pads compared to PCCB.

Obvious that the GT3s brakes either std or Ceramic would last longer than the TT also.

The standard TT brakes with Pagid yellow pads and AP racing brake fluid work very well for about three hard laps of the Ring. Then they get HOT and need a rest, but so does the rest of the car (and the driver).

Yes, I too notice the howling noise from the PCCB especially after a thorough car/wheel wash but the noise goes away quickly after a short drive.

    Re: PCCB

What are the cost of PCCB pads compared to stock TT pads ?

    Re: PCCB

My dealer mentioned that Porsche did testing on the second generation PCCBs and that after 120,000 km there was no signs of wear what-so-ever...did not clarify if that was both the pads and rotors, or just the rotors.

    That is very good news.

You can take it for granted that he was only referring to the rotors.

The pads use "conventional" friction materials and have to be replaced roughly as frequently as with cast iron rotors.

I was told the same by my dealer. I assume he was referring to rotors too.

I'm sure just the rotors, the pads will wear in a similar fashion to conventional. The interesting thing about carbon brake rotors is their life is measured in cycles, normally related to number of pad replacements, and apparently there is no way to measure the wear as you would on conventional ferrous rotors. So the "no signs of wear" comment is a bit misleading.

Gary, how does one measure "wear"

    Re: PCCB

Anybody know how much a PCCB brake job costs vs. a standard TT brake job?

In Christophorus 316 Oct/Nov 2005, there was an article about PCCB being used in Supercup.
    Quote:
...before every run the discs have to go on the scales."Brake disc thickness alone is not a clear indication of wear; weight and surface change also have to be considered"

Also interesting is that the rotor drilling pictured is the same as the new turbos

On conventional discs, thickness and runout. With carbons, like I said, number of heat cycles. It's much more of a guessing game than measuring ferrous discs.

Not sure, but I've heard about 8-10k.

I was at a Porsche dealer in Chicago and their svc/parts dept said the new PCCB rotors are about $7-8k ea.

I have heard that each rotor costs over $5k (part cost only), so that if you needed new pads and rotors on all 4 corners, the total cost would be well over $20k...

    Re: PCCB

Damn, that would hurt. It's the diff. of a new car trade. I love the tech. behind them, but between the high cost of admission and the replacement costs (it will be a consideration for the next buyer), I chose not to get them.

Before I believe Porsche on that topic, I'd have to see independant 'proofs'. Remember the 1st gen PCCB? At the beginning, Porsche also was saying they'd last for the entire car's life...

I'm sure the new ones are better, but... 120'000km and no sign of wear? What kind of 120'000km? Autobahn?
