Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

Is there anything that can be done to carry a spare tire in a 997 S (with the result of not having space in the front compartment) in case one suffers a tire failure at an odd location and time of day? I am mostly concerned once the car runs out of Roadside Assistance service.

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

You can do a search on spare tire. I remember seeing a post on here where someone had a spare tire in the back seat of the car. I would not do it but there is a mod for it.

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

I purchased a mini spare tire (not collapsed), jack, tools, and cover on eBay. It's from a 996. Fits in my trunk without a problem, but does take up 1/3 the space. Have it strapped down with velcro so it can not fling forward in case I need to stop short (it may dent the aluminum hood). I wouldn't be caught without a spare. I can not hear on the phone, so I can not call for roadside assistance.

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

I got a tire plug kit and pliers in my trunk. Gives me the peace of mind that if I just got a minor hole from a nail, etc. I can fix it in a few minutes, use the mini air compressor to get me to the nearest gas station or home.

Getting a spare tire is more trouble than its worth. how you're going to fit the 19" rear tire in the your car? for sure it will just dirty the interior unless you put it in a garbage bag.

I practiced pluging a tire on old spare. And litteraly, you can do it in a few minutes, without even having to remove the tire from the car, if you can locate the nail. For sure, its much better than the can of goop porsche gives you.

Forgot to mention that I keep a few garbage bags in the trunk just for that purpose, and yes, a plug kit too. I appreciate your comments about the pliers...forgot that.

If you order the car with the spare tire option, it will come like this:

I have no idea if the option is still available, as I am unable to find it in the current order guide, though perhaps I overlooked it.

Back-seat spare is regular 996 C2 spare (will not fit in trunk unless slanted which takes up all the room).

If you want one in trunk you get the 996 C4 "collapsible" spare.

Bolt-down weldment and installation shot of 996C4 spare in 997/S C2:

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

MMD: Nice photo and info. Was the bolt-down weldment a custom or purchased (from whom) part?

DIY. If you don't have a welder just get the 1x1/8 steel plate and a nut at Home Depot and machine it then drop off at your local welder. Ten bucks gets it welded.

Pop rivit in location shown... .

I'm having a bad day so forgive the question! Does the 19" standard wheel actually fit under the bonnet/in the trunk?

It must do...surely? (and I'n not calling you Shirley)

I'll be Frank, neither the front nor the rear tire will fit in the trunk. They have to go in the back seat. Put front seat all the way forward and you'll have a millimeters to spare for getting it back there.

Hey Frank. Not sure I'd want to put a filthy wheel on my back seats to be honest. Call for a recovery truck I say...

Jeez it looks like a puncture can be expensive!

It's up to you. When I got my spareless M3 it just took a few days after delivery for me to get a sidewall flat. Called "Roadside Assistence" and it took me the whole day to get it fixed (that's a whole 'nother story!). So needless to say I vowed that enormous waste of time of waiting for recovery truck-trip to dealer, locating a tire, getting it mounted... would never happen again; I got a spare for it; 15 minutes and problem solved next time.

You can order the large plastic bag from Porsche when you order the tire, jack, etc..

Oh, no spare? okay, when you do get a flat, make sure it's goo-fixable OR stay away from areas where cell phone coverage sucks.

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

Had a flat in my 986; the FLAT rear tire (18") fit in the front trunk; the REPAIRED AND FULL OF AIR tire did not. At least not with the front trunk securely latched. No back seat in 986 ... tried driving home about 2 miles with the front trunk insecurely closed ... ripped the hinges off when it released and flew up ... :-(((

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

Scotty A: I don't mean to add insult to injury; do you have a picture you can post of your 986 with the mangled "hood?"

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

Looks like a lot of people have a work-around on this. My experience started out with buying a full-sized wheel & tire and figuring out it would not fit in the trunk. Sent that back. Then got on Ebay and found 'doughnut' spare tire from a 996, with jack that fits snugly into a foam insert that fits into the body of the spare. That fit, slightly deflated and at an angle, in the trunk. don't forget a lug wrench and 9mm (?) socket. All this fits into a heavy nylon tire cover - nice and neat. Because the tire could roll from from side to side while cornering, I cram a big towel on one side. And don't forget a heavy garbage bag to put your flat tire/wheel in, because it will only fit in your back seat! Even at this, the tire still needs to be inflated to driving pressure.

It really is a mistake on Porche's part to omit this from the car to save a few pounds. Compare that with being stranded on a long, dark road. I can't figure out if Porsche is being arrogant or just plain stupid.

Re: Potential issues with lack of spare tire in 997 S.

    Puffy:

Sorry, no picture - it was several years ago, and even if I had a digital camera at the time, I was just too embarrased to take a picture and post it.

The two hydrolic pistons were ripped from their mounts and the hinges themselves were bent. The hood itself was fine. Before the repair the front could be latched but the rear - closest to the window - sat a couple of inches up.

They're saving money and trying to sell more cars. The weight/hp/0-60 specs of the car are all-important selling/marketing details.

It's bogus to say a spare weighs too much because you can always remove it if you go to the track. If you are on a road trip you probably have an extra person and luggage with you anyway; so why not have a spare too?

Funny how the risk of major inconvenience is transferred to the buyer, huh?

Funny how a lack of a spare lessens the much-touted "practicality" of the Porsche; the car, as sold, is simply less reliable without a spare!
