Who should buy a 4 wheel drive 997?

Well, if you look to speed data, the 4 wheels drives are always below the rear drive models of the 911. And whats more important then performance when buying a sports car.

Porsche says the 4 wheel drive just improves driving performance. means usually the car behaves like a 2 wheel drive. For the winter time with snow, the 2 wheel drive offers way enough traction to get up a snowy mountain road. I never felt the need in my rear drive porsche to have a 4 wheel drive in the winter.

But what means better driving performance like porsche says. At least the track times are behind the 2 wheel drive models. And acceleration is slower because of the higher weight.

So when would recommend to buy a 4 wheel drive 997 model???

Speed is not the only thing to consider when buying a sports car. If that is the case I am sure a lot of Porsche owners would buy other cars. I would think owning a 4 wheel drive car would be great if you lived in a mountain area, or a area with a lot of snow, or just if you wanted the extra traction. Most of the things we buy on cars we don't really need but what fun would that be? Do I really need a 997 that can go 170 mph when the fastest road I can drive on only allows me to go 70 mph?

Am I dreaming that I read (somewhere) that the C4 had faster track times than the comparable C2? The two cars may been a C2S vs. a C4S but you get the point.

Yes BudWeiser I read the same article saying that the C2S4 was faster around the track then the C2S. I personally have a c2Scab and enjoy the rear wheel drive, but if I lived in a state where snow was an issue I would go for the 4.

1. safety
2. wet/snow traction
3 wide body!

Some of us are able to enjoy triple digit speeds and braking and cornering abilities daily

When you have to do these on roads not up to bar with a track, four wheel drive saves your ass. When the situations and conditions are not optimum, 4 wheel drive has a better advantage.

This car is my daily drive and it has to be rock solid and has to be very safe. I need to have all the advantage I can get.

yes, the butt is beautiful

I think this is also reason for many buyers to choose the 4 wheel drive.

yesterday I had the chance to take a drive with the new 997 turbo. It was incredible which cornering speeds where possible. I was most impressed, when I saw what happened when going to fast into a curve:

slight under and over steering, the car was full controllable. I'm sure, with a C2 for an unexperienced driver the rear whould have been turned: game over

My car should be delivered this month - really can't wait on it. I also ordered the X51 power kit. But unfortunately it will be so much slower then the turbo, but I hope still a bit of fun

As a long time 911 owner and driver I merely ordered a C2S Cab. I also live where it never snows. I prefer the narrower body. I think the 4 is useful to someone new to the rear engine design of the 911. It forgives a lot of early mistakes.

44mm (i.e. 22mm on each side extra) is a tiny difference. I actually don't like the fact that the rear brake lights don't go nearer the edge as in the RWD models.

For me, the killer issue is the steering. I drove a C4S and it felt too heavy for me. I want a lighter steering.

In terms of the dynamic sensation when cornering, I want to feel 'pushed' around the corner from behind only. I don't want to feel at all (even 40%) 'pulled' round a bend like a bull being tugged at with a ring and rope through its nose.

I think most of the time on the road you probably won't feel too much difference between the C2(s) or C4(S) given the 95% which is fed to the rear of the C4(S). Okay, the weight might be slightly more on the front, but then that also depends on how much fuel you've got.

If you press on harder, or on the track, you'll probably be able to tell the difference more and adapt your driving to suit.

The 997 C4S is the first AWD Porsche to beat it's RWD sibling around the Ring, but it's worth remembering that the Ring isn't an ordinary race track, in fact I've read that the times were achieved with PASM in Normal rather than Sport because the Ring is more like a normal road than a race track.

If you put both on a proper race track my gut feeling is that the C2S would be the preferred choice (hence the GT3 only being made in RWD).

I don't spend much time (if any, at present) on a track so RWD wasn't important. I do spend most of my time on the road, where the extra security etc of the C4S is most useful. It's probably faster than a C2S on roads too given the Ring experiences, but I'm not Walter Roehl and neither are any of you (?).

I have a C2S Cab which follows a C2S Coupe, which followed a 996 C4S. I drove the 997 C4S cab and coupe extensively and kept coming back to the 997 C2S. It's more nimble, the steering has more feel, the front is lighter and more ready to turn. In other words it feels to me more like a sports car.

My car gets driven in winter in Chicago (not exactly known for mild winters) with a set of snow tires and it seems to do just fine. To be fair, if I lived somewhere with hills, twisty roads and snow I probably would sacrifice road feel and sportiness for the added security of awd.

If I lived in any of the sun belt states awd would not even figure in the equation - it would be a total waste.

My Boxster is a daily driver, soon to be replaced with a C2S Cab. I've never put winter tires on the Boxster, so it's really bad in snow. Any white stuff on the ground - or any hint of it - and it stays in the garage.

However, I also have a AWD Lexus RX which gets more use in the cold weather and in bad weather. With both, my thought is: why pay extra for the C4, add weight, and have a smaller trunk?

The only bad part is that I always seem to be without the SUV in the winter and have the Boxster in the shop in the summer. The first year I had the Box, my daughter suddenly 'needed' a car at school in Vermont and so took (at that time) my Audi A6. Last winter, my wife racked up her E500 4matic so she drove the Lexus all winter while the Merc was being rebuilt. Twice I've been rear-ended in the Boxter; both times in the warm weather. Right now it's in the shop missing a really hot four day weekend here in the NY area.

I've read that people seem to think that winter tires on the C2 make it work pretty well in the winter, so I may try that on the new 997S. Since I'll probably go through a set of tires every other year anyway, the extra cost of the winter tires is pretty much limited to the mounting expense.

C2Scabs provide such memorable experiences!!!

In sportmode with top down and psm on you can slide the tail out in first gear, shift to second and it pops back right in line... hehe

whith winter tires I used my previous boxster pretty will in the austrian hills. Pretty good traction, much better when front wheel drive cars. So no problems here.

But it really seems most of you claim the c2 as the more sportive car compared to the c4. I just wonder which track test showed up the c4 to be the faster one?
I guess for the 996 all track tests showed up the c4 is a little slower then the c2.

I'm really not sure, if I made the right choice with the C4.

I bought a C4S for the following reasons:

- In winter we get lots of snow
- Twisty and mountain roads
- It' s my first 911
- Wanted it to be an all year driver
- In late fall/ spring there can be lots of rain
- I like to drive hard
- The 997 does not have the same oversteer feeling as 996
- All in all, I thought it would be safer for me.

BUT the next one will definitively be a RWD.... for the exact same reasons as LeChef said

Yup. Also, I remember reading while the 996 4's were indeed slower than the 2's Porsche made a number of modifications to the 997 4's to make them just as fast around a track as the 2's. While the 996 4's had more understeer, the 997 4's were made to be much more like the 2's. There were a # of handling changes/differences (don't remember them) in the 996 4's to the 997 4's besides the tire size/body & AWD platform so making the same comparison's of the 996 4's & 997 4's is probably not accurate.

That may be true because the tires are fatter. It could be a dangerous irony, since many might feel an extra sense of comfort from AWD. However, once aquaplaning starts, it doesn't matter how many wheels get torque if they can't transfer it to the road.

i wouldn't think so. The only reason a 4WD would be more prone to hyroplaning would be due to the fact that it MAY have a wider front tire...that'd be the only reason i could think of
