    2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommendation

I just returned from a wonderful drive down the Pacific Coast from Bellingham WA to Los Angeles. I picked up my new C2S coupe at the Porsche dealer in WA and arrived home yesterday - almost 1,600 miles of beautiful coast line - photos to follow in the next day or two. I have two minor problems that cropped up:
    1. A loud and sharp "crack" over rough roads that seems to be in the LH quarter window or "B" pillar belt area.
    2. The brakes have developed a very slight vibration when first applied - and when stopping very slowly - perhaps very slightly warped rotors? I was very careful to not use the brakes too hard on this trip to prevent such a problem :>(

Any suggestions on the cause of #1 and what to do about #2? Also, any recommendations for a great Porsche dealer service dept in LA/OC??

    thanks!

Newport seems "on the ball." Have them check your problems.

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommenda

    Dick,

No idea of the cause of your first concern. Did you hit a rut with the rear wheel? I once went too quickly over a low spot in the road - construction work - and it sounded like I had damaged the suspension. Nothing of the sort turned out, but the front wheel shocks must have bottomed.

Regarding your second concern, if this is occuring consistently, I'd have the rotors checked for warping. If you traveled through some mountainous terrain, as is likely on the coast road, your brakes might have heated up a bit and then cooled off quickly.

I can't recommend a west coast dealer as I'm in Virginia, but I'd have a dealer check out your rotors for warping as soon as possible.

Dick: Stay away from Beverly Hills Porsche. I've had some really bad experiences there, including having two different 911s scratched (badly) by them. You might check out Pacifc Porsche in Torrance. I bought my 997S there and the service department seems pretty mellow (whereas BH Porsche is a zoo).

Congrats on the car. Looking forward to the pics.

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommenda

I'll ask a buddy of mine who recently brought a 4s but most people are away right now...let us know what you do... how they treat you whereever you go... if you get two opinions...

i grew up in the northwest and that is truly a beautiful drive! i'm looking forward to doing it in my 997s one day.

how did it work with buying it washington and registering it and paying taxes here in california, etc.

as you may know, in oregon they don't have any sales tax so you would save close to 10 grand but you HAVE to live there and the state is extremely strict about the residency requirements, laws, etc. (perhaps you can buy it then pay the taxes down here -- i don't really know how it works) but that seems like a great way to go -- to pick it up in washington and drive it down.

I have also had excellent service from Newport Beach Porsche. I have been going there for a little over 10 years and have never had a bad experience.

I will also vote for Newport Auto Center.

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommenda

Registering the car in CA was easy - but a smog certificate is required, and the DMV has to pyhsically inspect the car to look at the VIN plate., etc - a 5 minute free inspection. You must pay the CA taxes, just as if it was purchased in CA. It used to be relatively easy to avoid the sales taxes, but it is **practically* impossible to do so these days. I have a residence in Montana, and if I had elected to register the car there I would have saved about $7,500 in taxes and registration, but the car would have had reside in MT for 6 months first - and the CA government is getting pretty cagey on catching the scofflaws.

I will get the car in to Newport Beach later this week and get the few niggling gripes straightened out. I live in Yorba Linda, so NB is easy.
By the way, the PSE is great - a wonderful noise!!

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommenda

did you have to pay Washington state taxes as well? why did you get it in washington? did they give you a deal off MSRP? let us know what and how they treat you at newport porsche.
    thanks!
    any pics of the trip?

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommenda

No Washington taxes paid - but I did have to pay $25 for a temporary operating permit. The dealer did indeed work with me on the price - and accepted my first offer. The car was ordered to my spec, so they didn't have to do a lot of work. Pics tomorrow - as soon as I figure out how to post 'em.
Part of the rationale for purchasing in WA was the very "friendly" dealer, and part of it was the enticement of a week's driving the full length of the WA, OR and CA coastline. The car is essentially broken-in, we had a nice mini vacation, and saved a few bucks over the typical SoCal dealer pricing. I'd forgotten to spec the floor mats, so the dealer threw those in, added the clear front turn lenses, and sent me on my way with a qt. of Mobil 0W-40 - all gratis. I have a 997TT on order with them now after the pleasant experience.

great idea! i love the idea of "washington state delivery" -- perhaps not quite european delivery but for people out there who don't know the trip you took it's incredible (grew up in oregon and have traveled several times between oregon and LA along the coast)! thanks...looking forward to hearing that you get treated with northwest-friendliness at a So Cal dealer!
any favorite stretches of road? it's been a while but the northern california/oregon coast is breathtaking...

What's the name of the dealership and salesman you used in Washington? It may be worth ordering my GT3 from them if they have a spot open on their allocations. A quick call couldn't hurt

    WA dealer

Roger Jobs Porsche in Bellingham WA. The GM's name is Byron Sprague. I suspect their allocation of GT3's are sparse and already spoken for, but you never know. I'll be waiting for about a year, maybe a bit more, for my 997TT.

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommenda

The ride from Washington to Cali sounded awesome.
Sorry you had to hear those noises, but there are some nice areas of open driving space coming all the way down...Hope you enjoyed that. I LOVE my PSE, cant imagine any of my lifetime owned Porsches now being without that musical system.
    Goodluck.....

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommendation

DK, just curious what's going on with this? any progress? which dealer did you go to and want was there diagnosis? let us know how it works and would love to see some pics.
    i miss the northwest! thanks

    Re: 2 minor problems w/ new 997S - & SoCal dealer recommendation

I took the car to Newport Beach last week where they discovered the left rear quarter window had been improperly gasketed at the factory - it took two attempts to find the sharp knocking noise, but it is dead silent now they've re-installed the window properly. The brakes are another matter. The brake pedal and steering wheel vibration when the brakes are lightly applied is just perceptable - not severe. Of course, the service guys said they "can't reproduce the problem a this time." I tried to get them to put a dial indicator on the front rotors to check runout vs specifications, but they want to "feel" it first before starting into the car. I may let it go for a bit, because if it is indeed warped rotors they are going to get worse pretty quickly.
The Newport Beach service writer, Dennis, seemed very competent and did a good job of keeping me appraised of their progress.

pics to follow later this week
