    Why comes the track machine without Sport Chrono clock?

    Maybe this has been discussed before, but i haven't found an according thread.

    I just noticed that the upcoming 997 GT3 RS doesn't have this (IMO ugly) "Sport Chrono" clock on the dash.

    Hm. This is THE Porsche for the track. If you spec a regular 997/987, you are forced to tick the Chrono package box because of all the comprised features like PASM sport mode, TT overboost etc AFAIK -- if you like the clock or not.

    But the GT3 RS... well... doesn't!

    So regular Boxsters or 997's have a lap timer on the dash... so owners can measure their commuter run... while the decdicated track machine GT3 RS doesn't... i really don't get it.

    im guessing weight savings. if they use a sticker for the crest on the "hood" ...then i'd say that they'd omit the wart as well

    Perhaps the wart is actually a true poser thing. Perhaps they consulted track officionados and found they don't want the thing. Maybe the only person who likes the wart is a marketing type for the Carrera.

    BTW, will Porsche void the warrenty if the GT3 is run on a track?

    plus, anyone who seriously tracks the car will have REAL timing gear on the car, & not have a need for a manual stopwatch on the dash

    I thought they stated somewhere that the RS has preparation for such a function...

    thats what i mean, i'm not sure if it comes with it or not, but a real racer wants REAL timing equipment. not a novelty piece

    Sorry, I don't want to offend anyone. Get what makes you happy. It's just that "everyone" seems to wish the wart wasn't there; they only got it because it came with the throttle mapping and other misc. stuff.

    With all due respect, do you have some hard data (like a poll) that indicates people are mostly happy with the stopwatch occupying the central dashboard?

    BTW, "everyone seems..." are my operative words.

    Would be interesting to do a poll.

    There'd probably be three main groups.

    one group of guys who like/love the [aftermarket-looking] stopwatch sitting proudly on the dash.

    A group which doesn't mind it and would not miss it if it disappeared.

    Third group who hates it.

    IOW, if SC were available WITHOUT the stopwatch you'd see alot fewer stopwatches on the dash.

    I dunno, I hear alot of complaints about it and it *did* get named "the wart" which is obviously not very flattering... .

    Perhaps this would be a better choice. It looks just as good stuck onto the dash AND it tells time (doesn't just measure it)!

    Just because the Sport function in serie. As individual option there is a separate Chrono Package (or Chrono Package Plus with PCM) containing only the chronometrical tools: chrono on dashboard (and on PCM if equipped).

    So if I got that right it will be possible to additionally get the stopwatch for the RS? How much does it cost?

    I do hope that the Sport package will be available without the silly stopwatch in the future - it does look fine on the Boxster in between the two airvents on the dashboard but it does hurt the lines on the classic shape of the 911's. Of course, this is not only my opinion...

    I'm hopeful that this might signal the ultimate disappearance of the wart. If only it had happened in time for my C2S to have been wart free.

    What's funny is the 996 interior look has been called "loaf-of-bread" because of it's oval-oid shaping of the dash and other trim (doors, console etc).

    The 997 interior seems to have moved away from the l-o-b design vocabulary. The straight-line retro look of the early 911 is featured. Funny that the SC stopwatch retains the "loaf-of-bread" shape IOW, it would look more appropriate in a 996.

    the wart just provides an ideal location for a boost gauge for those who choose to add a super/turbo charger to their 997's

    I think if Porsche really wants their drivers to use the Sport Chrono as a lap timer, they should develop a GPS based system (like aftermarket developers).

    If you were actually doing hot laps that thing is 101% useless..... I also got it because of the sport suspension and throttle package that it was bundled with....

    I have to admit, I bought the sports chrono because everyone was saying that it was a must option....so far have only used it a couple of times and if I were ordering the car today, it wouldn't be in my specs

    You mean you've only used Sport mode a couple of times?

    I must admit that I find the different throttle map a pain in the ass to get used to. The alternative is to have it in sport mode all the time, but I like the idea of having PSM on with it's normal settings for normal driving, plus I find Sport mode too aggressive for use with a cold engine. All in all, I wish that:

    1. the throttle map was half way between sport and normal aall the time
    2. you could switch from normal to sport mode PSM settings manually without needing a change in the throttle map
    3. the wart wasn't there.

    The rental Ford Ka I had the pleasure to enjoy last week in Holland had the Chrono Sport package! We now know where Porsche got the inspiration from...

    Pierre, you've got it exactly right.

    Porsche put that wart there because it was becoming a popular styling cue in many cars in fact. How can a 911 be attractive to the wealthy looking for a status symbol when it doesn't have the cool look that their Infiniti has? The same goes for the 50 buttons on the dash and the TV monitor in the 911, the chrome trim on the 997 Targa, and the overstyling on the 997 GT3 and Turbo. These are all silly styling trends of the present.

    Anyone who tries to rationalize that wart as a useful tool for the track aficionado is deluding themselves. And anyone who thinks it's cool now will be changing there minds in a few years when this ridiculous trend has gone.

    Whatever it takes to sell cars. I liked the product better when Porsche was a struggling company with an uncertain future. I hate my 997S's 19s, cop-like PITA PCM, and fake quads.

    I have found the remarks and thoughts on this subject in this forum to be most refreshing and contrary to the general consensus of other forums. I am in agreement with many of the posters here in regards to Sport Chrono.

    I currently have a 2007 997S on order that is scheduled for production on July 13 so I am starting to see light at the end of the tunnel and the count down now begins in earnest.

    When I listed my options on another forum I was chastised (by some) both in public posts and PM's for NOT ordering the Sport Chrono.

    I am not a fan of front loaded throttles as I much prefer the more linear throttle of the "old" carbureted days. Call it personal preference but my current 2004 M3 has a sport button that changes the throttle in much the same way as the Sport Chrono and I never use it. Granted the Sport Chrono offers more features than just the throttle mapping, but between the throttle, and in my view, unsightly gauge on an otherwise clean dash, was enough for me to opt out. I do wish I had the option to change the PSM, but in all actuality doubt I would ever need to even use that feature as I found the PSM to be very unobtrusive in a two day PDE I attended in March. I will have PSE (I ordered the X51 kit) so I will have separate control of the PSE which would have been integrated into the Sport Chrono and as I will be the only driver the individual preference features are a mute point. The only thing I don't quite understand about the Sport Chrono is the difference in the rev limiter cut out. All in all, I didn't see the Sport Chrono as a must have and subsequently didn't order it.

    This is what I am waiting for taken from my ProForma invoice. I also opted out on the short shifter as I have never liked them, but they were all after market and I could add that option at a latter date.
