    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

In 10 years combined ownership of a Cayenne TT then a TTS but only about 80k miles combined, I have spent at least $30k in tires and brakes not even counting the winter tires and rims. To compare with the Macan now over 30k miles this specific cost has been... zero, no expected cost for another 10k miles, and no need for winter tires. Then if you add up the fact that the CTTS would be over $150k when the loaded Macan turbo was $93k, it makes it a huge winner for a vehicule that drives better.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

How did you spend so much on tires and brakes? Maybe you're just being overly cautious or something. Tires and pads should last a very long time.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

Yeah, the optional 295/35/21 tires are about $300 each. If you say half of that $30k amount is for tires, that's a set of four tires every 6500 miles or so...

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

4 brakes changes total, on the CTTS they were $4.5k each... Tires were close to $500 a pop and last no more than 15k miles.Never drove above 80mph.

I remember I had the discs and rotors replaced on my 955 Turbo S and I think I paid something over 3k EUR for it. I remember this pretty well because I had a shock about the cost and the fact that it happened at around 30k km. I thought the brakes would last at least 50k km. Did drive pretty fast indeed and I had steel brakes (not even sure the PCCB was available for the 955 Turbo S).

You went through $18K in rotors and pads? You got taken to the cleaners...

Don't know how you wore the tires out in 15K miles either. Tirerack shows even the most expensive tires at only $320.

Do you own a Cayenne? My dealer is not on the cheap side but they all are expensive. The Cayenne TTS has one of the biggest brakes on any production car. It is a heavy car with gobbles of torque and tires go pretty fast unless you just cruise on the highway. I usually wait until the brake light goes on to change the brakes and not the dealer to tell me way too early to do so, which they have done sometimes as much as 10,000 miles too early on other cars.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

I still think you didn't do your homework. Just searching Google yields forums results that seem to indicate you overpaid and probably overdid it.

The brake light is about the sensors in the pads, not the rotors. Rotors should actually be measured. Apparently dealers will just recommend both at the same time, but in many cases rotors, especially rears, can be totally fine.

Cayenne might be high performance, but it's still a heavy SUV just like many other heavy SUVs. It should get a pretty reasonable amount of mileage out of things.

Dealer just called me. The new G500/G63 will be ready to order from January 2018 onwards. Delivery can take place in May 2018. The G350D will be available 6 months later (doesnt make sense anyway). No Hybrid planned.

    Keep you posted!

Do you know, by any chance, when the C class Coupe gets the digital dash? My sales guy says "not for another year" but I am a little bit skeptical.

Could never imagine flying an entire family first class. That would cost like $30-50K just to Europe... That's insane.

Maybe a good solution would be to either bring a nanny or have you or your wife fly a day in advance, so one of you has had some rest upon the arrival of the kids?

I use Centurion card and pay for 2 tickets, the other 2 are free.

Last trip on Swiss, 4 tickets First Class total cost around $15k.

Just called a guy in Stuttgart. He said Autumn 2018. Also - this article confirms the same:

Yeah, I have one too, but the tickets that qualify for Centurion are the absolute most expensive ones. It's probably still cheaper to just buy 4 low-fare business class tickets than it is to buy 2 full fare and get 2 free.

I just did a search and you can fly Finnair for 4 people business to Zurich for $2500 each. Swiss is $6500 each at a minimum.

I personally wouldn't pay $15K on some short flight like US to Europe. That super short.

I paid 3600 EUR for a Premium Economy trip for four adults, nonstop from Munich to Las Vegas and back.

Not a fan of flying first class (I don't have a Centurion card though, just a Platinum Smiley Smiley) because I really do not mind flying economy (I turn on my iPad and the world around me is...gone Smiley) and neither do my wife or kids. Our advantage is: We are not very tall, so no issues here, especially since me and my wife usually sit at the aisle (2 +2, our favorite combo but 4 in the middle is OK as well).

Of course I would enjoy a more comfortable seating arrangement but for over 10k price difference? I'd rather not sit at all for 10 hours. Smiley Smiley Just imagine what nice things you can get for 15k.

Our advantage is that we always fly as a family, so we never have to deal with annoying seat neighbors and such. Makes a big difference!

Lame. This is probably the model with the most need for a hybrid/EV powertrain. These things are fuel sucking pigs that weigh 8 million lbs. They would benefit immensely from massive electric motor torque and fuel savings. They would also help to put the weight much lower in the car considering how tall and block it is.

Well, I guess I'll be buying my first G-Class in 2028 then.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

Hybrid systems on SUV save nothing on my first hand experience. Torque? V8 bi turbo has plenty of it.

Will it be built on a totally new architecture or based on the current one? For a while now I've been flirting with the idea of getting a G63 in Solarbeam.

Shitty system. You need at least 50 miles of electric range. That will drop fuel usage substantially since that would cover the vast majority of day-to-day driving.

Naturally it would still use a bunch of fuel on long trips.

Full EV with 300 to 400 miles of range would be best

Why do you have to involve EV or hybrid in a G-class threadyes?

One of the main reasons to get a G class in the first place is the monstrous V8 engine, along with the dual side pipes. They fit the character of the G class so well makes driving such a car enjoyable.

Smiley There was a special lease offer from Mercedes for the G63 AMG in Germany a while ago but I found out too late. If I knew that, I would have taken a car in a heartbeat. Unfortunately it ended and no cars are available anymore. Smiley Not sure if I remember right but it was around 1000 EUR per month (not sure if with or without VAT), for 24 (or was it 30 months) and with no initial payment. Cars were fully loaded (worth over 150k or so).

I think we better get one soon as all signs show that such cars are coming to an end, and then the era of silent electric cars will rise and be everywhereSmiley. Makes it such an event that when you drive the G63, you will be heard from a mile away Smiley

Complete new suspension. Further on 10cm more width. Frame itself stays mostly as they want to keep the nice gadgets (i.e. sidepipes) which is only possible if they use the old frame (which was approved 40years back).

Solarbeam is beautiful but it is way to expensive for a color (IMO)

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

That's the beauty of getting a lightly used one. The first buyer pays for it, and when the time comes to sell it, the price paid for the color becomes a loss.

So it's OK to whine about exotics going NA to turbo, but not about a crappy slow turbo SUVs to EV. Gotcha. Turbo exotics sounds like shit, but suddenly a turbo V8 with sidepipes is amazing.

The main reason to get a G-Class is how it looks. No one is buying these for their engines or driving characteristics. They're super expensive, cool looking status symbol cars. It's why they sell so well in LA and why you see them all over major cities.

Sure, keep that ICE for people who truly wants really off-road usability. For everyone else, electric powertrains would be much better. They'd be quicker, more efficient, and likely more dynamic in normal usage.

Furthermore, they're already so big, heavy, and expensive that you could stick an insane amount of batteries in them without worrying about the ramifications. Now you get huge range as a bonus.

Yes many turbo exotics such as the 720s doesn't sound good, but the turbo used in the AMG GT and G63 does sound amazing and is acknowledged everywhere.

The engine is the main reason why the G63 sells more than the G550 even though they both look the same. In addition, they are not slow, in fact they are faster than most SUVs.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

They'd be way faster with an electric powertrain. Like, not even close.

The G63 AMG sells more because the G550 are already $125K to start, so a mere $20K gets you better engine and probably includes a few trims and options standard etc. The G65 on the other hand is garbage value at an $80K premium.

Smiley There were so many used ones in Germany, some quite interestingly priced but now, not many to choose from since the new one arrives soon. Maybe there will be more (used) G63 available once the new one shows up...

Still, wishful thinking since my wife hates the G63 and getting one wouldn't be a clever thing to do for me. Smiley

I am also hoping for a big drop in prices of the G350 or G63 - but learned that quite some friends have the same "idea" - so I guess it will still be in high demand....sadly
