Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

My dealer called me when their first turbo came in - I wanted to sit in the adaptive sport seat yesterday, to check it out. It's great. But, interestingly the arrangement with this first car and the prospective owner allowed the dealership to use if for test drives. Before I arrived, a test driver put it into a guard rail - apparently he lifted at a wrong moment.

Coming off a 500hp 993tt and 8-10k miles at the track, I'm probably fine driving this car but, honestly, I'm excited it's a bit dangerous. And...um, I'll be certain to request no one "test" MY car when it arrives....

    Charlie,

Perhaps you should wait for a test drive of the 997GT2.

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

Ouch. That sucks. Hopefully the guy hadn't already paid for the car.

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

The damage was just a big rear bumper scrape - amazingly the fender was completely spared. Owner apparently was ok with taking it after repair.

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

As far as I know, the prospective buyer hasn't paid for the car in full yet but rather he left a deposit. It's a shame though. I had a chance to drive this particular car before the incident happened. It's rather minor from what I hear. Were you able to see the damages that they were talking about?

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

Looks like I spoke too soon. Made the post before you posted, Charlie. We'll have to compare notes. Mine is an October build, when is yours?

So would you call that a "Barrier" moment?

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

That was funny, Jim. Good pun.

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

Barrier moment. That IS a good one.

Just a bumper scrape, very close to the fender. I didn't look at it very hard - everybody was embarrassed enough without My gawking. Certainly wasn't a big deal. Merely an interesting story about the car being a handful for the inexperienced.

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

I don't even HAVE a build date, I'm SO far down the list...

I warned people before and I do it again: the 997 Turbo is extremely fast but it can put you in a coffin pretty fast too and I'm not exaggerating. It is faster than the old 996 Turbo but not as forgiving, especially with Sport Chrono ON.
And whoever tells me that this is BS, a little hint: dude, you don't know how to drive at the limit, you just think you're fast.

So again, guys: take it easy at the beginning, get used to the car. If you're a sporty driver anyway and you're used to high power supersportscars like the 993 Turbo, etc., leave Sport Chrono ON from the start to get used to it. Driving with Sport Chrono OFF is much less of a challenge, it should only be done by people who want to make sure they don't crash the car after the first couple of miles.

This has nothing to do with "I'm a real man, I have to drive Sport Chrono ON" stuff, I'm serious, keep it easy at the beginning and get used to the car. It can be so much fun and extremely fast but at the limt, you better know what you're doing.

Good point. I'll tell you what: Let me drive your car with Sport Chrono ON and if I crash it, I'll buy you a beer and admit that I'm not a manly man .

To stop joking, how about making some videos of the beast, so we can see how this thing performs?

Re: Interesting note on 997tt driving dynamics

The more you guys write about this stuff, the harder and longer the wait until Intercity arrives with my car sometime next week... minutes feel like hours, hours like days and a full week feels like a year.

With all the controversy from the Ferrari, Gallardo and Z06 folks being thrown at the 997TT forum constantly, at least I know the car is a true contender. Being compared to these cars can't be all bad.

I am excited about this car!

    Was PSM off?

I understand that if the tester turned PSM off.

Did this fellow switch PSM off? With PSM on, lifting should not cause oversteer, unless this was total wreckless driving. Can you find out more? It is important to understand this car's real driving dynamics.

P.S. - I would never enter into a new car deal and allow test driving. Insane!

    Re: Was PSM off?

I doubt the driver messed with PSM. And the knowledge came to me hours after it happened, maybe 2nd or 3rd hand. Who knows....

I won't be turning it off.....ever! Heehee. A man's GOT to know his limitations.
