    Big Ferrari accident

It happened yesterday at Estoril Circuit at the end of the main straight in a track day. The guy was at full power and lost the brakes, two people were in the car and both came out well.. It was said the car had been at Ferrari dealer last week to check the brakes!

Takes car to dealer because brakes seem messed up, proceeds to high speed track day? Yikes...

Hard to blame the guy if dealer signed on on car being fine...

He dove into that turn early to save the car to his left. Major heads up live saving move. Glad everyone walked away.

Guy brings car to dealer to fix brakes, gets car back and drives it as intended. What else should he have done? Smiley

Problem is or would be for me at least: Will I drive again on a race track ? Whether the dealer messed up the brakes or not, it wouldn't matter for me as the shit happened - glad, it was not me. However, it is still frightening - from what I can see -  there were NO brakes at all...

I"ve spun more times than I can count, mowed more lawn than I can count, even ripped a front wheel off the car on a big off but I'm still a part of the first group!

As previously mentioned, heads up play by the driver to not involve the car ahead of him. And unfortunately shows how useless gravel traps are in really high speed crashes. He just skipped across it.

Surprise that more tracks doesn't follow Paul Ricard and uses the grip paint. But in this case it wouldn't help much either.

    Re: Big Ferrari accident

I lost the brake once in hwy early morning just before ramp to stop light, I was 120 km/h and just 50 metre to light,I let the car stop while applying hand brake, I can imagine " what the fuck moment ", the ferrari driver was saying when he approach the turn and heading towards tyres. not a good feeling.

With a hand emergency brake I can see trying to use that however with the new ebrakes for parking I doubt it would have occurred to me to push that foolish button.

Exactly. If the dealer can't get the brakes right, who can?!

This is why I never give dealerships second chances if they mess up...but messing up the brakes is a completely different level of incompetence. There are protocols to follow when working on the brakes...

    Re: Big Ferrari accident

Think I mentioned it before, but at Portimao last year I semi-lost the brakes in a 918 at 280+ on the front straight. Car doesn't quite slow down and I ended up at the collection area in turn 1. Was a bit scary as I was on a trajectory to collect the instructor's lead car, but missed him on the back side. Second lap the brakes works fine then again same thing on the next lap. Went back to garage and switch car.

    Re: Big Ferrari accident

Some more info about the accident. There was a profissional driver on the passenger seat giving advices to the driver. Seems there was a huge drivers error, he brake on the 100mts mark, he should have brake much, much earlier. The 488 makes 280kph on the final straight and it was said the driver had already made some late brakes before the accident. So no blame for the dealer.

yes, I don't know how it really works in these situations.

    Re: Big Ferrari accident

hmmm, strange...even, if he had been braking very very late, ie. too late, there should have been at least signs of an "emergency braking" visible in the video. At least, if it would have been me, my right foot would have gone straight through the pedal onto the asphalt in pure desperation. Again, lucky, the guy was...

this sounds bad, I don't understand about late braking on a recreational track day, there's no price to collect, I always brake too early just to be safe.

too early braking ?....same with me, however, my butt is always scared earlier than my brain, so...Smiley

    Re: Big Ferrari accident

If there was nothing wrong with the brakes it makes me suspect the mindset of the driver. Some very wealthy people can actually be desperately in debt and looking for a way out. Scary to be an instructor to say the least.

    Re: Big Ferrari accident

Driver error...more likely than dealer messing up.

I agree, driving with a knife between the teeth at a relaxing and non-competitive event is just dumb.

Late braking is an art and it requires lots of experience and very accurate knowledge of the car's behavior/tires/brake pedal feel/ABS system reaction and of course asphalt conditions on that particular track.

    Re: Big Ferrari accident

Supposedly it was a racing driver behind the wheel... For sure I didn't notice much in terms of braking, he must have an extreme view on late braking!

Can someone explain to me what late braking is? I didn't even see brake lights on his car.
